2. Chapter 2

Ryder walked back and forth, listening to his brother’s lame explanation for coming back here.

“Dude, I’m serious, it’s been like, a century since we’ve seen each other. We need some brother to brother bonding time. I’m sure you miss you’re older, cooler brother.” Like hell I miss you, he thought. “Besides, down in our hometown, Lakesview, there’s bound to be hot, sexy ladies ready for me to manipulate.” He chuckled on the phone and Ryder could visually see a cocky grin plastered on his brother’s face.

“Three words for you, brother. Don’t. Come. Back.”

“Why not, Little Brother? I thought you missed our mischievous times we shared together. We could always go back into the past; that is, unless, you have something else on your mind?”

Ryder wanted to yell, he wanted to scream at his dumb, arrogant brother, but he fought against it so he did not cause a show “I’m serious. I’m done being that jerk of a player. I’m a different person than I was in the past. I’ve grown up.”

His brother laughed. “Grown up? Again?”

“Yes, again. I did it for one reason.”

“Let me guess…” There were a couple of seconds while his brother thought of a good reason. “Destiny?”

Rage flooded through his body. His muscles bulged and his face twisted in anger. “How’d you know that?”

“Trust me, Little Brother, I know more than you think I do. Destiny is a very beautiful women, I’ll give you that. But she’s different. She’s not human, brother.” His tone got serious. “Have you checked eyes? Do they give you any hints as to what she is? What about her blood? Have you smelled it yet? You filthy-”

“Stop.” Ryder said rather calmly. “Just stop. I know she’s not human. That’s why I’m so intrigued about her. Her whole existence is fascinating. Totally extraordinary. But I’m also in love with her, and I don’t plan on pressuring her about all this. I already kind of pressured her enough for one day.”

“Oh no, did you give her the ‘I’ve been in love with you my whole life’ speech? So cliche of you, Little Brother.” His brother’s voice was very sarcastic, like always. “How about I come and spice things up a bit?”

“No!” Ryder yelled. Heads turned and gave him a weird stare, so he turned back around and continued to whisper. “You cannot come here. It’s not a good place for you. Believe me. Besides, you hate high-school, that’s the reason you dropped out, right?”

“You are so right. But I think it’s time for a change. I need good education if I want a life. Right, Little Brother? See you first period.” Before Ryder had a chance to yell back a response his phone beeped, notifying him that the line was dead. What did he mean by first period? Was he coming to torture Ryder today? This morning?

“Shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit! If he comes here all hell will be loose. And I’m going to be the one who will have to fix it, like always! Then he’ll go after Destiny, and…” Ryder continued to mumble to himself, not aware of his surroundings.

“Ryder?” He jumped at the sound of his name. But he realized a girly voice questioned him from behind. A little startled, he turned around and saw that it was his love: Destiny.

He looked around frantically, trying to get ahold of his thoughts. “Uh, what’s up, Des?”

“‘What’s up?’ That’s what you have to say? ‘What’s up!’ What’s up is that you just confessed your love for me and then you run off like some maniac when you see who’s calling you, and the next thing I know is that I can somehow hear you from all the way down the hall! Who’s your brother? You told me you were a single child! You liar! You are a filthy dog!” Her insult hit him harder than she would ever think. “I trusted you, we were best friends for all my life! I thought you-”

He put a hand on her mouth to stop her from yelling and attracting attention to them. But also, she had no idea what she was talking about. And two, what she was saying hurt him, both physically and emotionally. But one question remand in his head that he did not ask out loud: How could she hear him from all the way down the hall? That proved she definitely wasn’t human. “Destiny, stop. I told you I was a single child to protect you. I didn’t do anything wrong, but I get it if you don’t want to go to the back to school dance…” His voice drifted off.

She gripped his hand and pried it off her face. “Listen, Ryder, you’re still my best friend, and I like you and all, but what are you talking about? Protect me? From what, exactly? There hasn’t been a kidnapping or murder for who knows how long! So just stop with all this nonsense, stop with all the secrets.” I’m not scared of murders, I’m scared of the other things that could hurt you.

“Fine. No more secrets.” His heart dropped as he said that. He always hated telling lies to her.

The corners of her lips turned up slightly. “Good. Alright, but we need to talk about-” Before she could finish her sentence, the bell rang. “Oops. Better get to first period.” She chuckled and walked away from him. See you first period, his brother’s words echoed in his head.

     “Ah, hell.” He muttered.

Destiny must’ve noticed that he wasn’t right beside her because she stopped and looked back at him. “Are you coming, slowpoke?” She grinned at him. Did nothing in the past five minutes happen?

He shook his head, now is not the time to worry about that. He should just go with the flow. He still has a week until the Back to School Dance. He can definitely get her to say yes in a week. He grinned back at her. “Yeah Des, I’m coming.” He caught up with her and together, they walked to first period, just like they had since freshman year.

When they arrived in English, they took the took the two back seats in the corner. He sat down and stared at Destiny, watching her sit down and get her books out. She was mesmerizing. Totally and completely beautiful, no doubt about it. What he felt for her was real, he felt the love for her deep in his heart. He wanted to tell her how much he cared about her, show her how much he loved her.

As if feeling his stare, she looked over at him with a blond brow raised. “Why are you staring at me like that?” She whispered as the teacher walked in.

He shrugged and looked at the English teacher, peeking over at her every once in a while.

“Alright class. My name is Mr. Gilbert. I am your English teacher for today, and the rest of the 180 or so school days. I would like to announce that I’m not your average English teacher. I’m way more fun that those tedious teachers.” He grinned like a fool. What a teacher, Ryder thought.

“Alright students, we are going to go around and share our names and our favorite school subject. Hint hint: It should be English.”

The students, one by one, shared their name and favorite school subject. Most of them had said gym or even history. Just before it got to Ryder’s turn, the door opened and in walked a man, or rather another student. Not just any ordinary student, though, his brother.

“Sorry to bother your class, Mr. Gilbert. But I’m new here and got lost in the halls trying to find this class. I’m Nathan, sir. Nathan Benson.”

“Benson, ya? Are you by chance related to Ryder Benson?”

“Indeed, sir. Ryder is my adoptive brother.” Anger shot through Ryder’s body. Of course he would say adoptive. They looked pretty much nothing alike. But no one knows the true story.

“Very interesting. Well it looks like,” he looked around the class for an open seat; there was only one open seat left, and that was right in front of Destiny. Just his luck. “There’s an open seat right in front of Destiny.”

Nathan strode on by and sat down gracefully in front of Destiny. Jealousy and sadness creeped up into Ryder’s emotions when he saw the way Destiny looked at his brother.
