2. Chapter 2

My stomach flutters and chills run down my spine. My mouth is open, but no words come out. All I can remember is back in third grade when I first saw him. I was so fascinated. He was just so perfectly imperfect.

"Hello?" His brows furrow in confusion.

"Uh, h-hello mate" I fake a British accent. Fuck. Why did I do that?

"Oh, Alicia didn't tell me you were British" he smiles.

"Well Alicia didn't tell me you were blind" I say back. Holy shit. Why did I say that!?! He's going to think I'm a total bitch now!

He pauses for a while and then shakes it off. "So what's your name?" He tries so smile but I can tell he's struggling. Probably because I was just a total ass hat.

"My name is..." I stop to think. "Elizabeth?" I say, although it comes out more like a question. "Yeah, Elizabeth" I continue. Shut up. I should just shut up now.

"Are you sure?" He laughs a little.

"One hundred percent. What's yours?" I ask casually.

"Eric" he replies simply.

There's a long pause and then I decide to break the silence.

"If you don't mind me asking, Eric, how long have you had, uh, that... condition?" I stutter trying to find the right words. Of course I already know the answer, I just needed to think of something to say.

"My whole life" he says matter of factly.

"Oh that must suck!" I burst. Uh-oh, I'm getting super nervous and I'm starting to act stupid.

Luckily, the waitress comes to ask us about drinks before he can answer.

"Coke please" Eric says, a faint smile crosses his lips.

"Just a water, thanks" I say, not taking my eyes off of Eric.

As the waitress leaves, Eric decides to change the subject. Thank god.

"So I hope this isn't weird, but, I was wondering" he pauses. "I was wondering if you would let me... feel your face" he scratch he's the back of his neck.

"Uh, n-no" I hesitate. I don't want him to recognize the feel of my face.

"Oh, sorry" he looks down. I can tell I've humiliated him. He obviously gets uncomfortable every time he asks and he had to work up the courage to ask, and I rejected him.

"I mean, of course!" I say cheerily.

He perks up and reaches his arm out. This time, he gets it right on the first try. He reaches out and gently places his hand on my face. He slides his fingertips from my left eye, down my nose and across my lips again.

"Paige?" He whispers.

"What was that?" I pretend not to hear.

"Paige!?" He removes his hand.

"Hi Eric" I drop the fake accent.

"Why?" Is all he says.

"I'm sorry" I say, but he cuts me off.

"You lied to me. You tricked me. You used the fact that I'm blind against me and you tricked me. Why" his jaw clenches.

Just then, the waitress comes to bring us our drinks. "Can I take your orders now?" She asks politely.

"We're still looking" Eric says coldly, keeping his head looking straight in my direction. Of course, he can't really see me but he usually moves his head towards people when he talks to them. I guess it's to make him seem more normal. The waitress leaves without saying anything. I guess she can feel the tension in the air.

"I can explain" I say quickly.

"I'm listening" he leans back and gets comfortable.

"Well, you see, I tricked you because, I um, well, I" I struggle to get the words out.

"Trying to think up more lies?" There's anger in his voice. I don't blame him.

"No! It's just that I've liked you for a really long time and when I saw you here, I panicked and I was worried that if I did something stupid you'd not like me or something so I pretended to be a different person so that you wouldn't think any differently of me" I said quickly without taking breathes. "If that makes sense" I finish off with a deep breath.

"Yeah" he raises his eyebrows. "I think I get what your saying" he smiles. "So you like me huh?" He chuckles.

"Uh," I blush "let's just not talk about that" I smile shyly.

"How long have you liked me?" He asks, completely ignoring what I had just said.

"Grade three" I whisper.

"Great three!?!" His eyebrows shoot up. "It's taken you so long to talk to me so I'll give you this, you're very subtle" his grin is as big as it can go.

I open my mouth to talk but he interrupts me. "Hey do you wanna get outta here?" He says a bit quieter.

"We ordered drinks... we have to pay for them" I remind him.

"Well I haven't touched my drink, and yours is just water, so of we leave now, we technically didn't steal anything" he convinces me.

"Ok" I smile, feeling like a total rebel.

We get up, quickly put out coats on, and sneak out.

"How did you get here?" I ask when we finally leave the building.

"I have a driver. Like a chauffeur. I call him when I need him" he walks beside me. He looks so focused when he walks with that stick in front of him.

"Is it hard to walk? Do you need to concentrate hard?" I ask, intrigued by everything he does.

He smiles "no" is his answer. "The stick is really useful" he says.

"This is my car" I say when we finally get to it. "Do you, like, need help?" I ask,

"Yeah kinda" a look of embarrassment washes over his face.

"Ok" I take his hand and put it on the car door handle. He figured it out from there.

"Where are we going?" I ask as I start the car.

"Wonderfly Park" he replies.
