Queenie had been acting weird all week, always jumpy, and always keeping her right hand in her pocket. Until we were training in the kitchen. A white piece of paper slipped out of her pocket. She seemed really mad.
I stop writing and go back to the kitchen. Halfway there I hear a lot of screaming. Queenie, Auntie, and Uncle Tom were all yelling at each other. Queenie always yelled, and Tom, but very rarely Aunt Rogue.
I slowly walk in the kitchen, and pretend not to hear the fear in their voices. Grabbing an apple, I turn around. Aunt says something I never expected, ever.
"Why are YOU getting assassination contracts!" Before I can let the words sink in and analyze what they mean, Queenie Speaks up, scratching the place on her neck where I kicked her.
"Uh, people heard about me.........and decided to help me?" She stutters, not sure how to explain it. I let the only word I can form come out of my gaping mouth.
"WHAT?!?!" Nobody even noticed I was here until I said that, then the entire room looks at me for a split second. Then go back to whatever happened with Queenie and who she described as, " a man in a long back robe, who never had the decency to give his name." It didn't matter anyway, cause Tom knew exactly who they were.
"Chess Pieces?" I ask, but nobody notices.
"Sound like them?" Aunt tuns to Uncle Tom, with worry clear in her eyes. It seems to be battling with a anger stage as well. Tom nods slightly, tensing up.
"It's them." Aunt whips back around to face Queenie.
"Do they know who you are? Did you tell them your name?" She quickly deals the words out toward Queenie, who looks disappointed in herself.
"No....just my nickname. I kinda broke a window when I entered." The faces of my Aunt and Uncle turn a sickly gray.
"Then they're coming." One word flashes, red and bold, in my mind. DANGER, DANGER. It seems to beep with alarm, but I can't move.
"That was irresponsible of you....." Tom doesn't finish, and looks back at his wife.
"We need to get back to the barracks. Get to your ship, and give us a signal, will you?"
"Aye, aye." Aunt didn't wait for an answer before consulting Queenie, who has also inherited their contorted facial expressions.
"We are going to have to call-"
"No! Mom will kill me! Look, let me do this job, or they will come after us. They won't stop." I've heard of talk between Aunt and Uncle about these people. They won't stop, until the Shadownight family name does.
"I will get rid of them! I'll break off the deal all I have to do is this one job!" She pleads, but Aunt isn't budging any time soon.
They talk more about the dangers of doing this, and I get scareder and scareder by the minute. Finally Queenie breaks down and tells them who they were making her kill.
** 2 DAYS LATER**
Our house had been robbed. That's all I have to say about that. Of course, being my age, I was scared to death, but nothing important was taken, just books. However, the thousand dollar lock on our door was broken and couldn't be replaced.
Queenie was back to normal, as normal as she can be anyways. Aunt and Tom are still after the Chess Pieces or whatever, so Zoe's in charge. Mom and Dad will be back in a few hours anyway.
Annabeth and Brynna were still away at Hogwarts, how long does it take to drop a person off anyway?
And everyone else had some kind of school to attend. So it was just me, home alone. Zoe will be back really soon, cause she just had to go pick up her drivers license. Not that I'm fine alone, it's just that everyone else is on edge about one thing or another. Plus, that lock's still not fixed. And whoever broke in knows it.
