I wake up early the next morning, earlier than usual. At first I'm startled by the noise coming from Queenie and Zoe's training room, but then I realize it's just Queenie and Bex yelling about something. Knowing I'll never get back to sleep, I slowly slip on black tights and a navy blue shirt under my usual black vest. My boots are lying, as always, next to my bed, ready to be worn for another day of training and chaos. They instantly wrap around my shins, accustomed to the feel of my legs and feet. I roll my eyes, pull on my belt, and go to see what's going on with Queenie and Bex.
" I don't care, this is MY SWORD!" Queenie yells, and I quickly walk in to see them both gripping the handle of a silver sword.
"I was in here using it first, just let me finish!"
"You're finished NOW!"
"Guys, shut up. There's plenty or swords," I walk through them, taking the sword and throwing it on the ground, "if you want to settle this, fight for it." I tease.
"I'm cool with that, come on Bex! Scared?"
"Of you, ha. No more scared than I'd be of a fly."
"Just fight already." I yell, rolling my eyes. Bex leans forward, and whispers something that makes Queenie smile and nod. Before I know it, they're coming at me with full force.
I jump from my spot on the floor, and grab the lowest ceiling rafter, and swing myself up. Queenie, being almost three feet taller than me, is able to jump higher, and I'm forced back on the ground. Bex was waiting for me, and pounces. I pull out a knife and hold it behind me. Before she can land, I wiz my arm around, using the knife to cut her lightly on the back of the neck. Queenie jumps down, and picks me up. I can't fight back fast enough before she spins and throws me on the floor. A spot on my elbow where I landed starts to bleed, but I ignore it and get back up, throwing a knife that hits her upper arm. She winces and pulls the small knife out, flinging it to the side. I know I've done it now. She reaches for me again, and this time, throws my straight at the glass window.
I brace myself, having done this before, as my arched back shatters the glass, once again. I try to get myself turned around in the air, but I don't have time. In the position I'm in, I'm landing on my back in the garden.
Right before I know I'm going to hit the ground, I hit something else. Maybe it was a statue that Mom put in the garden, I'm not sure. It falls below me, and I end up landing on it. I crane my head to see what I've fallen on, and see the furry that was on the couch last night. He doesn't say anything, just stares at me in disbelief. I smile and get off of him quickly.
"Sorry about that." I say, dusting myself off.
"Um, where did you...how-"
"Glass walls and Queenie don't match we'll say that much." He smiles a confused smile, and I reach my arm down to help him up.
"You okay?" He says, taking my hand and standing up.
"Me? It's you that you have to be worried about. I didn't realize you were down here, or I would've tried to move."
"In the air?"
"Don't question my skills." He laughs a little. It's weird, talking to a person, a boy person, when you haven't done it in so long.
"So, may I ask who you are?"
"Oh, the name's Shadownight, Kennedy Shadownight." He laughs again, and introduces himself.
"I'm Secrets, and I guess now Secrets Shadownight."
"Cool name. So let me guess, Midnight found you?"
"You got it. I was-"
"Hey, I don't need to hear your life story now, I got work to do. You mind helping me?"
"Sure, as long as I know what it is I'm doing."
"Can you scale a building?"
"Yeah, I was in the Royal Marines." He says proudly. I laugh a little, thinking about how he must think that will help him around here. It proably won't, but it's better than a person who has never held a weapon.
"Okay, mister big shot, follow me and don't make a sound." I hold a finger to my lips before starting to climb up the house. He places his limbs exactly where I place mine behind me. I'm having fun, although I usually prefer to do this on my own. But I agreed to help him fit in, and if he wants to, he has to learn to fight with the best of them. The Shadownight family.
