10. Losing after Loss
I cry into my curled knees. Brynna was gone, Queenie was gone, and Zoe just went God knows where. She promised she'd be back, didn't she? She said she wouldn't be gone long, right? After all, what would the family do without her? What would we do without her? This family would come crashing down even farther than since the others left. She was the one who fixed us again.
I'm still in the stupid training room. My shoulders are still aware of the two inch deep hole in them, so I can't do anything. Mom promised I'd be better, and be able to throw again the same. You never realize how much you need a body part until you lose it.
There's a knock at the door to the matts. I draw a dagger from my belt. I'm in no mood for visitors.
"Kenny?" Scratch that, I was defiantly in the mood for the visitor.
"Queenie!" I ignore the pain and unlock the door. Before she can come in I embrace my big sister. I feel her smile through the hug.
"What are you doing down here?" She asks, eyeing my bandages suspiciously.
"I haven't exactly left." I just went up for meals. I haven't even opened my journal since I snuck of to kill people that wanted my family.
"What happened?" She runs a finger softly over my shoulders. I wince.
"Bex kind of turned into a lion. It's not her fault." I add the last part as I think of it. I know it's not her fault. And I don't want anyone else blaming her for it. Queenie looks like she wants to ask more, but refrains.
