When someone says a piece of them is missing, they mean the heart. That lump of muscle that stimulates such a powerful chemical reaction is that final piece of a jigsaw. A piece that falls into place by itself. Jigsaws are made of many pieces. It takes a diary and the scrawling of one mysterious girl to place that final piece.


8. Don't let it go

A crystal magnifier dripped on to the page, slightly smearing the black ink. Realising his cheek was wet, Matt brought his finger to his eye and it came away wet.

He didn’t put the book down all that night. Even when the snores of the other patients ripped the quiet air and the nurses walking past gave him looks, he didn’t let the book go. Drama club memories, pictures of them at festivals with their friends, them attempting gym club for the laughs…

She had taken a picture of him in the hospital, exactly where he was now. In true style, she had photo-bombed her own picture. That face was…something. A huge grin split his face. Settling down into the duvet, he clutched the book tight to him and fell asleep. The smile never left.
