26. Chapter 26

It was 6:43 am when I heard the loud clatter of nurses and doctors sprinting through the dimly lit halls of the un-operating hospital.

We had crashed in the hospital waiting room for the night. Me being worried about Zayn, I didn't want to leave him.

I immediately sat up on the uncomfortably stiff couch and frantically shook everyone awake, me being a bit dizzy from sitting up so suddenly, but I completely disregarded it in my state of worry.

"Sarah, go back to sleep. It's six in the morning," mumbled Harry in his sleepy state from the floor.

I suddenly heard the name "Zayn Malik" being mentioned by one of the nurses as they ran down the hall and my whole body froze.

"Guys, wake up!" I almost shrieked.

"What the hell is going on?!" exclaimed Liam and looked at the commotion in the hallway.

"I think it's Zayn," I said, staring at the hall as well.

Louis immediately stood up and walked into the hallway. He grabbed a random nurse by the shoulder and I watched the motions of their lips as they spoke.

Louis then nodded and walked back over to us, his eyes holding a deep worry in them.

"It's Zayn. He's dying."

. . .

When he spoke those four words everyone in the room let out a gasp. Not a single word was spoken nor was there a single movement.

Zayn...was dying? No, this couldn't be. He was completely fine yesterday when I talked to him. He was smiling and laughing and already feeling better. This wasn't possible! How could he be dying?!

"What the hell do you mean, Zayn is dying?! He was perfectly fine yesterday! This doesn't make any fucking sense!" I half screamed at Louis, breaking the silence.

I balled my hands into tight fists out of frustration of the situation and how unbelievable and ridiculous it was, gritting my teeth.

Louis' eyes grew wide at my sudden outburst of anger towards him, but at the moment my judgment was fuzzy and the only thing running through my mind was Zayn.

I felt the weight of a small hand on my shoulder and turned around to see a very sleepy yet worried Danielle looking back at me with sympathetic eyes.

"Sarah, just try to calm down. Everything is going to be okay. We're going to talk to the doctor and find out what's really going on," she said in a soothing tone.

I quickly nodded and took a deep breath to try to calm myself.

Danielle and Eleanor stood by my sides while Jill trailed behind us as we traversed down the dimly lit halls of the hospital, trying to find a nurse or doctor to assist us.

All was silent, aside from my fast and ragged breathing as I fidgeted my fingers, picking at the nails in worry for what we were about to come across.

We managed to find Zayn's room where nurse's were running in and out in a hurry. Zayn's doctor suddenly walked out of the room and we all charged him.

"One at a time, please!" exclaimed the doctor.

He looked quite irritated and stressed out by the way his eyes kept frantically looking to the left and right and the small beads of sweat that trailed down his forehead, falling down the crease between his eyes.

"Is Zayn okay? What's going on? He's not really dying is he?!" I yelled. I didn't really mean to yell, but everything just came out louder than intended.

"Zayn is in a very critical state at the moment so no visitors are allowed until further notice," the doctor explained, looking at all of us.

He looked at me and placed a cold stiff hand on my shoulder.

"We're doing the best we can, miss. All we can do now is hope for the best."

With that, he dismissed himself and turned around to walk down yet another dimly lit hallway towards an office that appeared to have no lights on. We all stared until he disappeared behind the door, a light flashing on afterwards.

"Fuck!" I cursed under my breath.

"Sarah, you need to calm down. Everything is going to be okay," said Liam.

I turned my head to face him.

"How do you know, Liam? How could you possibly know if Zayn is going to be okay?! None of us have a single fucking clue, not even the goddamn doctor knows! Every single second kills me because I don't know whether Zayn is going to be coming back through those doors dead or alive!"

Liam's eyes grew wide and his skin went pale as everyone's voices stopped, the only sound that could be heard being the beeping of the monitor coming from Zayn's room.

A single nurse walked out of Zayn's room and stopped in her tracks at the sight of us. We all turned heads to look at her as well.

"Excuse me, but you lot have to leave. Zayn is in a very unstable condition and visitors are not permitted at all," said the nurse in a fake polite tone. Anyone could tell she was straight up annoyed at us still being here.

"I understand. We were on our way out anyway," said Liam and began walking away, Danielle following close behind.

"No!" I yelled and Liam turned around to face me.

"Sarah, we have to. They'll kick us out and we won't be able to see Zayn again if we don't follow their rules," exclaimed Liam, getting slightly agitated.

"I'm not leaving Zayn!" I yelled, my patience wearing thin.

"Sarah, I swear to God if you don't-"

"Sarah's right!"

Liam and I both stopped yelling and turned around to see a puffy-faced Niall, his face red and tears brimming his eyes.

"Sarah's right. We can't leave Zayn."

"Niall, this isn't a joke-"

"We can't leave him and you know it, Liam!"

I had never seen Niall act like this before. I was in shock. I had only seen him be a sweet and happy guy and here he was yelling at Liam and standing his ground for what he believed was right.

Louis and Harry stepped in and both placed a hand on Niall's shoulder to comfort him as a few tears streamed down his face.

"If you really cared about Zayn then you'd stay. Because he's not just our band mate, he's our brother," said Louis, eyeing Liam with a sorrowful glare while continuing to rub Niall's shoulder.

"You don't think I care about him too? You don't think I'm just as fucking terrified as you guys right now? I'm fucking losing my mind wondering if Zayn is going to make it out of there dead or alive. I've always been the one responsible for you guys, but this? I have no control over this and that's what really fucking scares me.

"Whether Zayn comes out of there dead or alive I will be responsible for it and always will be because I'm the one who keeps this band together. Yes, I can be controlling and strict sometimes, but that's because I care so fucking much about you guys and...and...I love you guys... I'd never be able to forgive myself if anything happened to you guys..."

By this time, Liam was on the edge of breaking down in tears, his hands balled into tight fists as his knuckles went white.

Louis slowly approached Liam and I became worried that they would start yelling again or Louis would hurt him. They both just stood there, intently staring into each other's eyes, not saying a single word.

Then, Louis outstretched his arms and devoured Liam into a tight hug. It was unexpected for all of us.

Liam didn't hesitate to hug him back as he wrapped both arms around his neck and buried his head in the crook of Louis' neck.

Harry and Niall then walked up to them and joined in a group hug, surrounding Liam in a huge embrace. All that could be heard was a faint sobbing coming from the middle of the group hug.

Liam wasn't a man anymore, he was a weak and helpless boy. A boy who needed the comfort of his brothers and the hope that the other would come back and fill in the missing gap.

I stood there, amazed at the scene playing out before me. This whole situation was bringing out the worst of us and it was stressing the hell out of me.

I leaned back against the cool hospital brick wall and slid my body down until my butt hit the ground in slight pain. I hugged my knees in the fetal position and dug my head in between my knees as I slowly began to doze off, with the sound of four hopeless sobbing boys filling my ears.
