Hugo's fists clenched as I told him what had happened.
I lay on his bed, covering my eyes with my hands.
"I'm sorry, Hugo" I sighed.
"It's not your fault" he said, shaking his head. "It's Lacey's fault. I guess I'll have to go speak to her." He sighed as he got up. "Do you mind coming with me?"
So there we were, stood outside Lacey's room.
Hugo grimaced, knocked on the door and walked in, and I followed him. Lacey looked up to look at us.
"Your little girlfriend snitch on me?" she asked irritably, but sarcastically.
"What do you think you're doing?!" he burst, anger raging in his eyes.
"Me?!" she asked indignantly. "What do you think you're doing?!"
"I'm going out with a beautiful girl who understands me, who isn't related to me, and actually listens to me, unlike everyone else!" he spat.
I felt myself go gooey. He said I was beautiful.. He stood there, obviously angry, but I just wanted to hug him.
But of course, Lacey was there to ruin the moment.
"Beautiful?" Lacey laughed. "You must be joking. She's only an accident!" She stared into my eyes whilst she said that, her dark blue, cold iris' piercing my soul.
"You nasty piece of work!" he snarled. "Fine, Sarah may have had her young, but it's not Emily's fault! She wasn't planned, but using your despicable term, she is a happy accident."
I felt a smile grow on my face.
A happy accident.
I never thought about it like that before.
"Listen to me, Hugo" Lacey said, going close to him. I took a step back.
"She is messing with your head. This'll never work, I promise you."
"How would you know?" he snarled.
"I know you Hugo, and"
"You don't know me. Emily knows me better than you ever will."
"You're my twin" she scoffed. "I'll always know you better."
"What's my favourite colour?"
"Come on" Hugo challenged. "If you know me so well, tell me that simple fact."
"Emily, please tell my twin what my favourite colour is."
"Blue" I said timidly.
"Told you" Hugo stated triumphantly.
Lacey glowered at me, steely eyed.
"Back off Lacey. Let's go, Emily."
When Hugo shut the door, I gave him the tightest hug I could.
"Whoa, what's that for?" he laughed, but hugged me back.
"Thank you for standing up for me" I smiled, resting my chin in his chest. "You're the best person ever."
"Wait until you meet yourself" he winked.
Hugo and I stayed out of Lacey's way as much as we could. We knew that if any of us spoke, it'd just end up in an argument.
School over the next few days, as predicted, was a nightmare. I was laughed at, being call an accident, hearing people say that crossbred and accident were some match. But I had to bite my tongue. I had promised both myself and Hugo that I wouldn't give these people any satisfaction by reacting.
A ball of worry sat in my stomach as the bell for the last class rang. It was Friday. It was one hell to another. No school, but Lacey at home for two days... It'll be nearly impossible to avoid her.
