My head snapped to the side, while the class laughed.
My breathing became rapid, my eyes opened extremely wide, my body heavy and rigid.
I heard more and more people jeering, whispering and giggling using that dreaded word.
I was panicking. My head was like a warzone.
How?! How could they possibly know?! This place is at least two hours away from my old school. The only people here that know are Hugo, Clodagh and.. Lacey! Lacey, the cow!
She bloody well would! All that apologising was a lie! How could she?
I spent the last classes letting anger and worry sweep through my mind and body as I continued to hear choruses of "accident!"
Lacey is the only one that could've told them. Hugo and Clodagh wouldn't even dream of doing such a thing.
I covered my face with my hands. his would be all over the all over the school by tomorrow. Now Hugo was going to get even more grief because of it.
As the bell for home rang, I decided to confront Lacey before telling Hugo what to expect.
As Hugo and Clodagh came into my line of vision at the school gate, I put on a brave face.
"Hi!" I said as cheerily as I could manage. Hugo caught hold of my hand, and we started walking home with Clodagh.
"How was the rest of your day?" Hugo asked.
"It was fine" I replied, too quickly and too happy. Clodagh frowned at me. She knew that something was up.
"How was your day Clodagh?" I asked, pleading with her using facial expressions and telepathy.
She understood the signs and talked about teachers and subjects and new people.
I breathed quietly in relief.
Hugo's Asperger's sometimes left him none the wiser about how I felt, and that suited me down to the ground at this moment.
When we got home, mum asked us about our day, but I was eager to find Lacey.
"My day was grand" I replied simply when mum asked me. "Excuse me for a minute, I just want to find something quick."
I slipped my hand out of Hugo's, and went straight to Lacey's room. I was nervous as hell, but the adrenaline was pumping through me.
Without knocking, I pulled the door open.
"Hello" she smiled innocently.
"What in the world do you think you're playing at?!" I hissed, slamming the door behind me.
"What?" she mocked. "Oh, I think I know what you're talking about. I'm sorry, it was only an accident" she evilly smirked.
"You're unreal!" I snapped. "People are going to bully Hugo even more now!"
"Don't drag Hugo into this. People are hardly going to say anything to him."
"Of course they are! It's already all over the school that we're going out, the accident thing will spread like wildfire too!"
She stood up with a disgusted expression on her face.
"You mean you let it leak that you're going out?"
"Why wouldn't we? We have nothing to hide!"
"You deserve all the misery you get anyway. How could you go out with my twin? It's gross and you're messing with his head."
"I'm not messing with his head! We're not bloody well related and we have done nothing wrong! Now your stupidity is gonna bring him even more shit in school, you inconsiderate, selfish bitch!"
I was breathing hard. Our hissing match was somewhat exhilarating. And even though all I could see was red, I was still surprised at what I had just said.
She glared at me, her face tensed.
"Get out" she said angrily, but silently.
"Get. Out" she repeated in the same manner.
"Unreal" I spat as I shut the door.
