"What'll we say..?" I uncertainly asked Hugo, as we got ready to enter the sitting room, preparing to tell mum and James the truth.
"I don't think this can be planned" he sighed anxiously, his breath loud, uneven and rattled.
I bit my lip and nodded.
"Strength in numbers."
Hugo smiled at me, and hugged me tight. I began to melt into him, but he let go, and pushed the door open. I looked up at him, and then walked in.
"Mum? James? Can we, uh.. Can we talk to you for a minute?"
"Sure!" mum answered perkily.
I frowned. It seemed slightly... Forced.
But I shook it off. I had more important things to deal with right now.
Hugo and I sat opposite of mum and James. After what seemed like a lifetime of silence, I looked over at Hugo. He raised his eyebrows at me, and then looked down.
I inwardly sighed. It looked like I'd be doing most of the talking.
Then, he seemed to think, took a deep breath, looked up and seemed to brace himself.
"We've been living together for about six weeks now" Hugo shakily began. "And, um.."
"Well, you probably noticed that Hugo and I get on quite well" I interjected.
Mum nodded in confusion.
"Is there something wrong?"
"Not... Wrong, exactly" Hugo said, carefully looking up to make eye contact. "Just.. In a.. Situation.."
"And not a particularly bad one!" I added, seeing mums worried expression and James' scowl.
But then, Lacey walked in.
"Lacey, not a good time" Hugo said quickly.
Her eyes scanned everyones faces.
"Oh, so you told them then" she mocked in a sickly sweet tone.
"Lacey.." he warned.
"What?" she sarcastically asked. "Oh, silly me, you haven't told them yet."
"Lacey, shut up and leave!" Hugo snapped, standing up.
"Or what?" she sneered.
I froze. Please don't let her say something like "Your little girlfriend".
"Lacey, this seems important" mum interrupted. "Go on, we'll talk to you later."
Lacey made one of James' angry faces, made a grunting noise, and then left.
I sighed in relief.
"What do you guys want?" James impatiently prodded. Mum frowned at him.
Hugo and I looked at eachother.
"Bluntly?" I asked.
"Bluntly" he quietly nodded.
I sucked in two lung-fulls of air.
"Hugo and I are in a relationship.." I announced slowly.
