"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthen, ambition inspired, and success achieved."
Ari hops up off of the couch and slips on her shoes. She grabs my arm and drags me off the couch and out the door. "Your visions are of the future, that means it hasn't happened yet. So if we hurry, we might be able to get to her in time."
So we run out the door, and I'm still barefoot.
There's still time. There's still time. I say to myself when my muscles scream at me to stop. Get to Tami, rest later.
When we near the party, I sprint through the front door and frantically look around for Tamsyn.
"Hey sophomore, you lost?"
I turn around and see Crush--Christopher, Tamsyn's boyfriend.
"Where's my sister? Is she still here?" I ask grabbing his arm and gripping it hard.
"Your sister left about five minutes ago, Short Stuff. She said she had to get something." He says.
"Where?" I dig my nails into his arm, making my fingers hurt.
He wrenches his arm free from my tough grasp. "Jeez, Witches Nails--"
"Stop it with the freaking nicknames and tell me where she went!" I interrupt him, and for a second I almost slap him for not seeing how important this is.
"She went to the gas station around the block, she told me that she drank the last of your 'Brain Juice'? Is that what she called it?" He asks. "And she went to get more."
"'Kay, thanks," I say and sprint out the door, almost running into Brent on the way out. Brent! I almost ran into Brent!
I force the thought out of my head and turn the corner. I'm almost to the street corner when I hear someone call my name.
I skid to a stop, turn and see Brent racing towards me.
"Not now!" I exclaim and turn back and start running again.
Not now? Did I just say that to Brent? Never mind. I look ahead of me and I catch a glimpse of tinted purple, blonde hair, and shout, "Tamsyn!"
She whirls around as I almost run right into her.
"We have to go, we have to go now," She says in a hushed tone.
She grabs my arm and pulls me along with her. "Why are you whispering?" I ask.
"Because, I think someone is following me." She whispers.
Come see our king. A smooth voice says in the back of my mind. Come see our king, and see if you are worthy of being a queen.
Tami drops my hand and I see a flash. I cover my eyes from the blinding light.
Once it clears, Tami is gone.
"No!" I scream.
I don't know when I start running, but soon enough I find myself back at the party.
"Fate!" Ari exclaims when she sees me. "Where's Tami?"
"Gone!" I shriek, then cry out as I step on a chunk of broken glass. "Son of a--"
"Calm down," Ari sets her hand on my shoulder, probably comfort me.
"She was standing right next to me!" Hot, angry tears stream down my face. "I was so close!"
My hands tremble, and I sink to the ground and bury my head in my hands. I should stop crying. I know I should, but I can't seem to.
Strong arms wrap around me and I rest my head on the person's arm.
"It's okay, we'll find her." The words soothe me, calming me, and making me feel warm inside. The words come from a voice I know, that I always seem to find comfort in--It's Brent's voice.
I don't remember falling asleep, but when I wake up, I am being carried away, bridal style. "Tami?" I mumble, thinking she's carrying me like she used to do when I was little and fell asleep on the couch instead of in my room.
"We'll find her." Brent's voice makes me drift back into sleep. "I promise."
Brent is carrying me--Brent is carrying me home, to safety. That's the last thing that's in my mind before I drift off again.
