"The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places."
I open my eyes and see a pair of bright green eyes looking back at me,
I close my eyes again and mumble, "Why are you staring at me?"
"You're awake!" Ari exclaims.
"I wish I wasn't." I say rolling over on my side.
"Come downstairs!" She whines, tugging on my arm. "Brent made us all breakfast."
"Brent's here?" I ask sitting up.
She grins. "Yeah, he wouldn't leave last night even after I told him who knows how many times to go home. I think he likes you." She says in a sing-song voice.
I playfully shove her away from me and try to stand...
...And I would've fallen flat on my face after I put any pressure on my foot.
Ari grabs my arm and steadies me. "That cut was deep. You almost kicked me in the head when I was trying to wrap it, Brent had to hold you down."
Oh yeah... I thought I was dreaming.
So I hop and hop through gritted teeth until Ari leads me over to the dining table and sets me down.
"Morning Fate." Brent smiles warmly at me.
"Morning." I mumble, smiling back at him, with my head swimming.
"Here, we made blueberry oatmeal." Ari passes me a bowl.
I mumble a thanks and take a bite of it. It tastes like the oatmeal Tami makes for me when I'm sick.
We sit in silence for a few minutes.
My head snaps up as the doorbell rings.
"Oh!" Ari exclaims. "Right, I forgot."
"What?" I ask looking at her and Brent. "Who is it?"
Ari gets up and answers the door and her mom, the nurse, walks in.
"She's here to help with your cut on your foot." Brent says.
"Don't worry," Mrs. Knight says walking over to me and starts to unwrap the gauze on my foot. "I'll try not to hurt it too much."
