At the beginning of dawn I finally stop crying. While looking relieved André goes outside for some fresh air. I follow him, not wanting to be alone.
"What did you dream about? You looked really out of it. Are you sure you okay? " he asks. I nod at the last question. Then I tell him about my "dream", which was more a memory.
"I was so scared, that I started to cry, and then I just couldn't stop. I'm sorry about that. "
"No, don't be. It's not your fault. Do you remember anything else? "
"No. Nothing. "
"Hmm, well just say so, if you do. "
"I will… Thank you. " I say and look directly at him.
Until just now he has been looking around at the chaos around us. People, ninjas, are running around, looking concentrated. One ninja is in such a hurry, looking down on his smartphone, that he runs into a tree. It doesn't look like he got hurt, rather it could look like the tree took more damage in the collision. Another one, a small and fast ninja, is running around, yelling orders to the others. But when I say those two little words, thank you, he looks down at me, surprised, like he didn't expect that.
"For what? " he asks, confused.
"For staying with me, even though I was crying like a baby… and for not abandoning me, even though you did not know who I was… and still does not, since I do not know myself. I am truly grateful for that, so… Thank you." and after saying that, I do a saikeirei* bow to him.
At first he just stared at me, stunned and amazed, but then he looks away while saying; "You're welcome. " His reaction seems a little rude at first glance, but I'm almost certain, that I saw a glimpse of embarrassment in his face, just before he turned away.
With a shy smile I look back at the chaos. Everybody seems like they are in a hurry. It is making the animals restless. Confused and curious I ask André, what's going on.
"Well, there's a lot happening around us. And we need to be prepared. Besides some of us need to go scouting in the surrounding area. " he answers. I wait for him to continue, but he doesn't.
"Scouting? For what? "
"So that we can find our enemy. " He stops again, but after seeing my curious face he continues. "We were hired by a noble family to protect something very valuable, something that are being targeted by many people. Those are therefore our enemy. For now. Unfortunately the family were attacked, and now we don't know, if they got their hands on it or not. "
"And that is, what you are trying to figure out? " I ask. He nods. "Why can't you just ask the family, if it is gone? "
"We can't, because there were no survivors, " he says with a hard look in his eyes.
"What!? No survivors. That is so sad. " I feel like crying again, my eyes are burning and it feels like something is stuck in my throat. I can't speak.
Suddenly I feel a pat on my head. I turn to look at André, who's looking at me.
"Don't worry. I don't think they suffered much. It was a quick death for all of them. "
"Are you sure? " I ask
"I'm certain. " I kept looking at him, searching for any sign of uncertainty. But he returns my stare with unwavering eyes. With a small sigh of relief I close my eyes and relax.
"Master André, I have a message from Master Willem. He says he wants to see you immediately, " an unknown voice says.
"Understood. Did he say anything about Adele? " André answers.
"No sir. He didn't say. "
"Okay. Tell him, I'm on my way. "
"Yes sir. " And with that he leaves us alone. André stays silent for another few minutes, then he turns around to look at me.
"I need to go. Are you gonna stay here or come with me? " he asks.
"Are you sure it is okay if I come too? "
"Yes. I'm sure. "
"Then, I want to go with you. " He nods and start walking in the direction, where the other guy disappeared to. I follow right behind him, like a lost little puppy. Or at least that's how I feel. Lost.
