Happy Birthday

When a party for a wealthy family’s ten year old daughter ends with the birthday girl dead, her older sister missing, and the father refusing to call the police, the detective isn’t exactly conventional. She finds herself at the site of the crime – a rented out old mansion – without any trace of memory. It’s the landlady who tells her that she is a private investigator who’s been hired to catch the culprit and bring them to justice.

But how can she solve a murder when she can’t even deduce her own name? Was it one of the party goers who did the young guest of honor in? …Or was it the ghost said to wander the haunted halls? Can she manage to find the missing girl before another tragedy takes place?

…And will she be able to sleuth out her own memories and the meaning behind their disappearance at the same time?

2. Detective

The sound of a gunshot breaks the silence in the room. A young girl is running from something...

Young Girl: No...!

As she runs faster and faster, her legs become unstable and she trips.

Young Girl: Aack! ..

But she gets right up and starts running again. She tries to run as fast as she can, panting almost every half of a second.

Young Girl: N-no! Go away!

The girl unfortunately meets a dead end. In front of her it's a large window wall, in her left a toilet room, and in her right, a room, possibly a basement. She stops, not knowing where to go. That was her biggest mistake.

Young Girl: ...! It's... it's a dead end!.... Aaack!! P-please...! Please don't --

Two more gunshots are heard. The young girl screams painfully.. followed by a pause. The last pause of her life. The one shooting approaches the girl.

Young Girl: *sob*... Why...?

A final gunshot finishes it all. There is nothing else that can be heard now. It's dead silence.

(Woman's Voice : It's so nice to finally get out somewhere, just you and me.

Girl's Voice : Yeah! It's so much fun! But...Is it bad that we didn't go with them?

Woman's Voice : Don't worry sweetie, they'll be fine. Your father will take care of it. But I say it would be a shame to waste the warm evening. I doubt we've many left before fall, you know!

Girl's Voice: I hope we do! .... I want this summer to last forever!)

A Young Woman is standing next to the stairs. She feels dizzy and takes a few seconds to come to her senses. She has medium to long brown beautiful hair and is wearing a gray dress. She finally came to her senses, after several minutes of looking around.

Young Woman: ... Eh?... Where is this?! she asks as she looks around panicked. ....And who-- before finishing that sentence, a Woman appears behind her. She looks like she is 30 to 40 years old, wearing a white dress and some beautiful earrings.

Woman: ...You're the detective hired to find our culprit, dear. Don't you recall?

Young Woman:...?! W-who are you?

Woman: ... I'm the land owner of this mansion. A rather wealthy family rented it out earlier this morning to host a birthday party for their ten year old daughter.... Unfortunately, she continues, the festivities have turned into tragedies.

Young Woman:... Huh?

Woman: The birthday girl has wound up dead. Murdered. A poor child of only ten years. The family's elder daughter has also gone missing.

Young Woman: ....

Woman: Being the bright, young private investigator that you are, you've been hired to sort out this terrible turn of events and save the second girl.... Their father isn't a big fan of the police, you see.

Young Woman: ... No way...

Woman: Good luck, dear.... And please just stop lounging and make haste? It's been a long, terrible night for everyone.

The woman goes down the stairs without saying anything. The young woman takes a second to sort everything that she just heard inside her head.

Young Woman: (Detective...? Am I truly a detective? I can't remember anything..... How am I supposed to figure anything out when I don't even know my own name?!)

Again, she falls into deep thinking for one minute.. But then she had an idea.

Detective: ( Is it possible that I might find my memories too if I start hunting down the murderer?.... There has to be a reason I lost them... And I wouldn't even know where else to go if I left!......Maybe....Maybe I'll give it a shot.)

And so our story begins.
