[NARRATOR]: the sunlight streamed into the room from the window. The curtains slowly swayed to the wind. Blinking, Mary Bluebell got up from her comfortable warm bed in her room. Her husband has already left to work early in the morning. Scratching her head and trying to get the numbness off on her arm, she slowly made her way to the bath room to get brushed. After brushing and tying up her short black hair, she walked up to her daughter’s bedroom. As she was about to knock on the door to wake her up to go to school, she remembered about the fight they had last night. She felt sad for yelling at her as she never yelled at her like that before. She loved her daughter more than herself. Thinking that she might still be angry and refuse to get out of bed, Mary knocked on the door. “Cynthia? Honey, it’s time to go to school. Rise and shine!” she said. No sound, no reply. Just as she expected. She tried to open the door but it was already open. “Honey?” she called, stepping into the room. The bed was made nicely; her table was clean as always, book shelf fine and the bathroom empty. Where is she? Mary wondered. Thinking that she might be in the art studio, she went in but she wasn’t there either. Then she ran to the kitchen to find out that an empty bowl with bits of cereal and milk was left on the kitchen counter, along a note. Worriedly, she picked up the note and read: “at school…” Mary was relieved but sad at once. Her daughter was fine and didn’t run away as she thought. But she was disappointed to know that her daughter was mad at her so she planned not to see her in the morning. With a sad mood, she began making a mug of coffee for herself.
I walked slowly down the path, with my eyes on the ground. The sun sent lovely rays of light on the freshly watered grass in the park. No one was around as it was very early in the morning. I was still sad and angry because my mom yelled at me. I didn’t do anything wrong and I didn’t make it happen! After all I did, she didn’t believe what I said that night. I never lied to her about anything. I always loved her and cared for her and I still do. But why doesn’t she believe what I told her?
“It isn’t my fault that we both got stuck in the shop!” I said to myself, kicking the grass. “I didn’t do it on purpose!” “Who said you did?” someone said behind me. I turned around to see nial. “Oh! Nial! You scared me!” I exclaimed. “He smiled and walked up to me.
He was wearing grey jeans, a black turtle neck with a white jacket over it. To tell you the truth, he kind of looked cute in it! “What are you doing here so early?” I asked him. “Ask that to yourself. What up?” he asked me. I sighed and sat down on one of the benches in the park. So did him.
“Sorry about last night.” I apologized. “Why are you sorry? You didn’t do anything!” he replied. “Well, I left you all alone in the streets without your jacket either.” I told him. “Well… that’s true you did but-““my mom is always like that when I happen to make friends with boys!” I interrupted. “I promise that I will repay you back for what she had done!” I told him. “Well, I think she is pretty nice!” he said smiling. I was confused and looked at him. “What? Even after what she did?” I asked. “actually, after you left, I began walking home promising myself that I will make you repay for it, but before I could even turn to the next road, your mom came in her car and stopped next to me. She gave me a lift home and apologized.” He explained.
I was still shocked. “What did you just say?!” I asked getting up. “Yeah. You heard me right. She did! Parents can be like that. They are just protecting you, doing their job. She-““you promised yourself that you will make me pay?!!” I said pretending to be angry. Nial’s ears went red. “I didn’t mean that!” he said as I began walking away. “Cynthia! Wait. It was just a joke!!” he called after me. I turned around while walking. “Aren’t you going to keep your promise?!” I asked in a mocking way.
I didn’t realize that I was walking right into a small flight of steps on the ground along the path. It was too late when I noticed the stairs. There was no railing to hold on to. I was about to fall on the hard stone pathway when nial caught me by my waist. I was shocked a bit and embarrassed at the same time. I was face to face with nial so close. Plus he was holding me by the WAIST!!!
His blue-green eyes melted into mine, making me get a chest tightening feeling. I broke away the dreamy stare by force and slowly moved away from him. He still seems to be in another world. Slowly, he put his hands into his pockets as if trying to hide them. “Uh… thanks.” I managed to say, and quickly begin walking to school. “Hey! Slowdown a bit! Don’t fall again because I’ll catch you again!” I heard him call in a laughing tone.
‘That was so embarrassing! How could I be so stupid?? He caught me by the waist! He kind and sweet though. Wait! What am I thinking?? I was caught by a BOY! This can’t be happening! And what was that feeling that came over me when he caught me? It was weird though. It felt butterflies and tightening and getting nervous all over and… a bit dreamy?? No. no way. That’s not it! ’
These thoughts were going all around my mind when we both walked to school, side by side without saying a word. But nial had a small smile on his face. I kind of felt weird as he was following beside me. ‘What’s he thinking about?’ I thought.
As soon as we got to school, I directly walked into the bathroom so nial can’t follow. He stopped right in front of the bath room as I went in. success. Well, not very much. I can’t hide away from the past!
I looked at myself in front of the mirror. My checks were still pink. My hands were sweaty and I am feeling cold in the palms and feet but hot all over. What’s wrong with me?? I took a deep breath to relax. Then I straightened my white sleeveless shirt with a hooded jacket over it and my black shorts. I ran my fingers through the locks of hair on my face. My hair was nicely combed and laid on my right shoulders. All set!
After hesitating for a few minutes, I slowly walked out of the girl’s bathroom expecting nial to follow me again. But he wasn’t there. I searched around for him. “Hey girl! What’s up? Who are you searching for?” Liz came over to me and asked. “I am looking for nial.” I told here. (She already knows what happened to me last night. I told her on the phone.) “He is over there” she pointed over to the end of the hall. Nial stood there with his hands in his jean pocket, in a rather annoyed mood. Beside him stood veronica, the new girl who transferred to this school at the same date as nial. She had her fringe brown hair curled a bit at the end. She was wearing a very short dress that extreme exposed her legs. She had pretty make up on with a pink clip on her hair. I looked at my own shorts which I was wearing. “I’d rather stay wearing these!” I told Liz, who was making a disgusted face at veronica.
We both walked up to nial and veronica. She seems to be the one who keeps on talking non-stop. “Hey guys!” I called. They both looked at us. Nial looked with a relived smile. Veronica looked with an annoyed scoff. She didn’t say hi back. Instead, she continued her talk. “So, as I was saying, because of that some band concert auditions, I have to prepare the studio, can you help m-“before she finished her sentence, nial broke in. “hey, Cynthia. The auditions music bands is going to start in a few days. Can you help me out?” I was stunned. “Me? Why me?” I asked. Veronica looked a bit angry. “Well, Liz said you sang before so you might have some experience on it. You don’t have to write songs or play an instrument. You could write a song or help us set up the stage. What do you say?” he asked. I was still surprised. I didn’t know what to say. “Umm… I guess I can help you on that…” I replied slowly. “Oh! Thanks! See you at lunch then!” he thanked and left giving me a smile.
As he disappeared to the next hallway, I turned to Liz. “That was weird.” I said. “Hmm… you must be Cynthia.” Veronica said. She observed me from head to toe. “Nice outfit though.” “Thanks!” I replied in my friendly tone. “But it’s a bit last season, don’t you think? Why don’t you pull on a dress like the one I am wearing, believe me, all the boys will be swarming behind you!” she said trying to sound like an expert. “Well, I think I’ll just stick to these. I’d rather keep covered up. Thank you anyway.” I replied kindly. Without saying ‘you’re welcome’ she put on a proud smile and walked away.
“What a person. Is she that rich?” Liz asked. “Don’t know. Seems like it.” I replied. “She acts like she knows everything. Doesn’t she?” Liz asked. “Maybe. But I think once when you get to know her, she might be nice…” I replied. “Get to know her? Count me out!” Liz said and walked away trying to imitate veronica’s model walking style. I laughed.
