“Come on, we better take cover or you might catch a cold!” Niall said after staying together for a while. “Not only me. Y-you too!” I replied as we began to walk towards a phone booth nearby. He was right, I felt like a bucket of cold water is being poured on me. When we reached the phone booth, a car came by and stopped near us. Niall was still hugging me, trying to cover me from the rain. The window of the car slowly slid down. I noticed a woman sitting in there but I didn’t pay much attention to her as I was shivering. The woman hurried our of the car and that is when I noticed that it was mom. My heart began to beat with fear. Was she watching us? How did she find me so easily?! But something she did made me smile: she took out a towel and hung it around Niall’s shoulders and told both of us to get in quickly. After glancing at each other with confused faces, we hurried in.
It was warm inside the car. Niall dried his hair a bit and began to dry mine. I laughed. “Dry yours first!” I told him, placing the towel on his head. “You should be the one to dry first! You’re cold as an ice cube!” he protested. “That is very nice of you Niall.” Mom said at the driver’s seat. “Why is that, Mrs. Bluebell?” Niall asked politely. “You rescued my daughter without even getting yourself an umbrella or another coat. That is a very nice and brave thing to do. I have realized that what I heard was all a lie. I was wrong to treat you that way. I am very sorry.” She said. “It is alright, Mrs. Bluebell. I know that a mother’s job is to protect her kids.” Niall replied smiling. That moment I was filled with extra joy because my mother actually approved him! She actually forgave and realized that it was all a misunderstanding! I smiled at Niall, who smiled back and gave me a hug.
After a few minutes of riding, we reached home. Mom gave Niall a t-shirt and black jeans which was actually my little brother Edward’s, who didn’t wear it since it was too big for him. I changed into a black dress which I wore at home, usually. We were sitting on the sofa, in the living room when mom went to fetch a mug of hot chocolate for each of us. “How did you know that was at the park in need of your help in the first place?” I asked Niall. “The emergency bell.” He replied, looking at me. “It began ringing louder and faster when I reached the park. I knew you were there. I knew you needed me.” He replied. I began to turn pink. “You’re cute when you blush!” he said. “What? Who is blushing?! Hey, say the same to yourself! You were bright red after we k-“I trailed off, blushing even more. “Can’t even say the word eh?” he replied mockingly. “Hey it is my very first one!” I protested but it came out in a tiny shy voice. Niall smiled.
Mom came with three mugs of hot chocolate and handed over one to each of us. “Thank you” Niall thanked mom politely. She smiled in return. “If you don’t mind, can you tell me who told you all the false information about us?” Niall asked. Mom placed her mug on the coffee table and said; “she looked about your age, has fringed brown hair with the ends curled, square face with a very rude behavior, not very polite…” “Does she wear clothes that extremely expose her skin?” Niall suddenly asked. “Why, yes. How did you know?” mom asked surprised. “According to your description, Veronica Kris is the only person in the whole world who matches to the way you described!” Niall exclaimed. I gasped. “Veronica?! Why would she do something that horrible?!” I asked. “I don’t know. But for sure she doesn’t like you.” He replied. “But what did I do to make her mad?” I asked. Neither of us knew why she did that. But for surely, the rain had stopped when our conversation ended.
“Looks like the rain stopped. I should be going now.” Niall said. I felt a twang of pain I my chest when he said that. He knew it by the way I looked at him. “It is okay. You will see me tomorrow at school.” He replied. I shook my head no, and held his hand. “I am not allowed to go out of the house, remember?!” I told him. “Who says you is not going to go to school?” mom said coming over to us. “Really? You actually mean it?!” I asked excitedly. “Well, on a few conditions…” mom said turning serious. “Yes?” I asked. “One, behave you and don’t break the rules!” she said. “That is the first rule in every rule list you give, mom!” I pointed out. Niall smiled instead of laughing. He didn’t want to show his impoliteness in front of mom. “Two, your curfew is 10.” She said. I nodded. “Three, don’t talk to strangers or be EXTREAM close to boys, well, except Niall.” Mom said. I blushed. “And four…” she said and turned to Niall. “Please make sure my daughter is safe. There are lots of bad people out there. You are the only boy I can trust on this, Niall.” She said. Niall smiled confidently. “Yes. Of course. I will protect her with all my life until my last breath!” he replied smiling. Mom smiled back. “Wow wow! Hey! Am I the president or something?” I asked. Niall smiled. “More like my princess!” he whispered to me, which made me blush.
“In case it might rain on your way back, here is a rain coat for you.” Mom said handing him a blue knee-length rain coat. “thank you so much, Mrs. Bluebell. I will return it as soon as possible.” He thanked. Mom smiled in delight. With that, Niall waved bye and left. “such a polite boy.” Mom mumbled to herself as she closed the door and went in. she had a smile on her face all that time. I knew she was as happy as me. That night, I slept better than any night of my life… yet!
