Chapter 15: Past

Luke's POV

We were on break from the tour. It was much needed, as much as I loved being on tour. We needed to get some album work started. The 1D boys were touring around Europe and we were off until we went to America. I was so excited for that! Everyone always wants to go to the States, just to see what it’s like. We had a little under a month until we went there though.

Things had been weird recently between everyone. Rylie wasn’t hanging out with us as much. And when she did, she mostly talked to Calum or Michael. I had also noticed that Ashton was not acting like his normal self. He was quieter, more distant. He was faking his happiness. I could tell.

One day after a writing session in the house, I found myself alone with him. He was kneeling on the ground, cleaning up popcorn that had been used to throw at each other in the middle of the session.

“Dude. What’s up? You’ve been acting really different lately.” I said to him.

“What do you mean? I’ve been acting normal.” Ashton said hesitantly without looking up.

“Ashton, you’re one of my best mates. I know when something is up.” I said to him.

He stopped picking up the popcorn but remained looking at the ground. I heard him let out a sigh. He slowly got up and sat down on the couch next to me.

“What do you do if the girl that you like says she wants to just be friends?” Ashton said slowly and quietly. I felt my stomach drop. Oh. Rylie. Wait she just wanted to be friends? I felt my hopes rise, but then drop again when I looked at Ashton.

“Rylie?” I asked him. He nodded slowly.

“Well sometimes, remaining friends is the best thing you can do. Because if you say you only want to be more than friends, and the other person isn’t in the same place you are, you might lose them for good. But if you continue to be her friend and be there for her, then maybe she’ll come around. Or you’ll find someone along the way that you might just belong with,” I said, adding the last part selfishly.

“But what if there’s another guy?” Ashton said more desperately. I felt my stomach do a somersault.

“What do you mean another guy?” I asked quickly.

“Well she said that there was another guy that she wasn’t sure where she stood with him and that she needed time to figure it out,” Ashton looked to me with his famous puppy dog eyes. I felt my stomach clench. I felt bad for him. And I was getting ahead of myself. Who says this guy is me? It could be someone from back home. It probably is.

“That’s rough man. Just hang in there and be there for her. She will eventually figure out what she wants. My advice would be to try and not let it ruin your day, everyday. Just be positive around her and show her that you can have fun with her just being your friend. Eventually everything will work out like it’s supposed to.” I said to him.

“Yeah I guess you’re right man. Thanks.” He said with a smile and gave me a clap on the back. I hit him back and before I knew it, he had me pinned on the couch.

I was cracking up and trying to get out of his neck hold. We were wrestling for a few minutes before the doorbell rang. I heard Calum through the struggle saying that he was getting it.

I had finally gotten Ashton pinned to the ground when I heard my name yelled.

“LUKE!” I looked up at the sound of Calum’s voice. Standing next to him was none other than Amber, my ex-girlfriend.

I let go of Ashton due to shock and stared at her. She gave me a smile and suddenly I was wacked in the stomach and was sent to the ground doubled over.

“I win!” Ashton yelled. As I was lying on the ground trying to regain my breath, I saw him look in the doorway to Amber.

“Amber? What are you doing here?” he asked her coldly.

“I just came to talk to Luke for a minute,” she said in her sickingly sweet voice. She then looked down at the ground at me a smiled.

Within a few minutes I was alone with Amber in my room.

“What are you doing here Amber?” I asked hearing the annoyance in my voice.

“Well I heard about you and the band opening for One Direction! That’s amazing,” she said as she tossed her long wavy red hair over her shoulder. Her freckled nose wrinkled a little bit as she smiled her perfect white tooth smile. She was still very pretty.

“So you decided that after cheating on me, blaming me for it, and then ignoring me, that it was okay to show up here again because you heard my band is actually going somewhere?” I said angrily.

She held her composition. “That’s not the reason I came over. I miss you Luke. I was stupid. I don’t know what came over me and I wanted to beg for your forgiveness. You didn’t deserve the way I treated you. You are an amazing person and were an amazing boyfriend and I lost sight of that. I came here to ask for a second chance,” she said, now crying.

I sat and thought for a moment as she sobbed. She had torn my heart in two. After being so in love with Rylie, I never thought that I would want to love anyone else. But then I met Amber. She made me happy again, until I saw her holding hands and kissing another guy at the mall one day. When I confronted her about it, she said it was my fault because I was focusing too much on my music career and not enough time on our relationship. And the sad thing is, I believed her. So I tried to apologize to her, day after day, but she ignored me. Finally, after deep talks with the boys, I decided it was time to move on. Even though I never entered another relationship because I knew I still had feelings for Amber, and even Rylie.

I thought about Amber and how much fun we used to have. She made me laugh like no one had before. Then I thought about Rylie. She had another guy that she was confused about. And I had told her that I didn’t want to have anything to do with her. I needed to move on from her. She was just another heartbreak waiting to happen. I sighed. I can’t believe I was about to say this.

“We can be friends Amber. I don’t quite trust you after last time, but I guess you deserve a second shot,” I said after all the thinking.

She looked up at me with a tear stroked face, smiled, and then pulled me into a hug saying ‘thank you’ over and over again.

What had I just gotten myself into?
