Chapter 7: Escort
It had been three days since I had seen the boys. And my mom. Well not really, we ate dinner together every night, but she was working with the band all day, everyday. They were closed rehearsals until the tour started, so I was not allowed in. Luckily the tour kicked off tonight so I was finally going to be able to see them play.
I had restrained from finding any of their videos on YouTube. I wanted to hear them for the first time in person. I was anxious to hear Luke’s voice. I was still shocked that he was in a band. As far as I knew, he had zero musical talent. But then again, I knew nothing about Luke anymore.
I forced myself to stop thinking about it with a sigh. It was about 11 in the morning and I was still sitting in the bed in the hotel room, watching TV. Just like every other day that I’ve spent by myself. I looked away from the TV and noticed a note sitting on the desk. Couldn’t my mom just text me stuff? She was so old fashioned.
I got up to look at the note. But before reading it, I noticed her credit card sitting beside it. Hmm I liked where this was going. I picked up the note.
‘Good morning sweetie! I have an all day meeting with Jack and One Direction’s tour manager just to go over some final details. But I thought it might be fun for you if you got to pick out a new outfit for the show tonight. I also thought you might enjoy an escort to help you shop. The escort will be there at 11:30 to pick you up, go to lunch and shopping. Make sure that you are ready to go by 430, we need to be at the arena by 5. Have fun, be safe and don’t max out my card! Love you! - Mom’
I looked at the clock again. 11:05. Shit. I ran to the bathroom, took as quick of a shower as I could, and got out. I looked at the clock again. 11:10. Ugh my hair is so thick, it takes forever to dry. Well I had to try. I blow-dried it as fast as possible, but when I was done, it looked like a lion’s mane. I was going to have to straighten in. I pulled back the top layer of my hair so that it would be a half up half down style, meaning I only had to straighten the bottom layer. After I was happy with my hair I looked at the clock. 11:30. And I had yet to even look for an outfit, or do my makeup. Then I heard a knock on my door.
“Umm hold on just one second.” I called out to my mystery escort. I put on the first clothes I saw: jeans, Ugg boots and a pink sweater. I was just going shopping; I didn’t need to look perfect.
I walked to the door, and looked through the peephole. Standing there was none other than Ashton. He was looking down at his cell phone. I felt my stomach get butterflies. I opened the door, and his head shot up. His face broke out into a beautiful smile as he looked at me.
“Good morning love, you look great. Are you ready to go?” he asked sweetly.
“Hi! And not quite. I haven’t done my make up yet, but you are welcome to come in and sit while I put it on.” I said leading him into our hotel room.
I sat on the floor in front of the full-length mirror, as Ashton sat on the edge of my bed. I started applying my foundation, making sure that it blended in with my neck. As I put on blush, I decided I should make this as least awkward as possible.
“So how did you get roped into being my escort for the day?” I asked Ashton curiously.
“Oh umm well I volunteered. Your mum was saying yesterday how you needed something to do today because you’ve sat in the hotel all week due to us being at rehearsals. I told her that maybe you just needed to be taken around town a little bit to feel less bored. She agreed and came up with the idea that you would need an outfit for the first show. And I didn’t have anything going on today until 5, so I offered to take you,” Ashton said looking slightly embarrassed.
I looked up at him as he finished, and I finished my make up. He was seriously too sweet. I gave him a huge smile of my own, feeling our eyes make contact and giving me another fit of butterflies. We didn’t look away until he broke the silence.
“Well are you ready to go? We have reservations at 12:15 and we have to get through the traffic.” Ashton said. I nodded, standing up to admire my outfit in the mirror. I was satisfied so I grabbed my purse, my coat and my mom’s credit card and headed out the door with Ashton right behind me.
Getting to the restaurant was a blur through the London traffic but we eventually got there on time. We sat down, and ordered our food quickly since we were on a time crunch.
“So are you nervous for the show?” I asked Ashton once the waiter had gone to put our order in.
“As of right now, no. But this is the biggest show we have ever played so I feel like I will be right before we go on. I am more excited than anything. Playing in front of a crowd of this size is going to be incredible.” Ashton said.
“Yeah I bet! I am excited to watch you guys. I also get to meet One Direction tonight so that’s exciting.” I said.
“Yeah I bet it would be to be a girl and meeting One Direction. They are crazy. But the nicest guys ever! It’s still so surreal that they chose us to open for them!” Ashton said.
Just then out food arrived. We sat mostly in silence as we ate. I noticed the incredible amount of food that Ashton consumed. Boys.
“So you tell me, are you excited for the tour?” Ashton said in between bites.
It took me a few seconds to formulate an answer to that question. I was kind of excited before the whole thing with Luke happened. But now I felt like I would have to hold back a lot to stay away from Luke and respect his boundaries. But on the other hand I was really excited. I felt like I was forming a good relationship with Ashton and hopefully all the other boys once we were actually on tour. Not to mention I got to travel the world, for free.
“I am. At first I was really against it, but after actually coming here, I am excited. I get to travel the world with two great bands. Who wouldn’t be excited about that?” I replied.
Ashton nodded understanding. “Why were you against it at first?” he asked.
“Well just the fact that I would be away from my home for almost a year, traveling with people I didn’t know to places I have never been before. I was kinda scared to leave everything I had known. But once I realized that there wasn’t really any reason to stay, then I was okay with coming.” I said surprised by my honesty.
“No reason to stay? What about friends? Boyfriend? Sports? Hobbies? Nothing?” Ashton asked looking concerned.
I shook my head. “None of the above. I never really fit in where I grew up. I was just kinda….there.”
“Hmm well that really surprises me. You are a very pretty girl with a very gentle and fun personality.” Ashton said sincerely. I felt myself blush.
“Well it doesn’t matter anyways. I get to go off to university next year and be in a different place anyways. I don’t mind leaving home.” I said.
We finished our meal with small talk about the show tonight and where we were going to go shopping. Ashton paid for the meal, then we got up and left to start the hunt.
“Well I think the biggest question that we should ask before we start shopping is, what kind of look are you wanting?” Ashton said to me as we stepped back into the crisp London air. Hmm that was a good question. I didn’t really have a style myself. I wanted to wear something comfortable, yet stylish and hip at the same time. We walked down the street while I tried to figure it out, but stopped once I saw a cute little boutique that I saw stuff in the window that interested me.
I pulled Ashton inside and started trying on outfits. It felt like one of those cheesy movie scenes where they play some girly song, while you show outfit after outfit, laughing at all the ridiculous combinations until you find ‘the one’. But seriously, that’s almost exactly what it was like.
After Ashton and I had said our goodbyes back at the hotel, I walked away feeling like I was walking on air. The whole day had felt like a cheesy teen movie. And I had loved every second of it.
