Chapter 11: Clubbing

Rylie's POV

I walked with the boys across the street to the club. It was packed. We waited in line for a few minutes before we were allowed to go in.

The club was really modern looking. Everything was white with the exception of the light up dance floor and the lights coming from the ceiling. Everyone was either out on the dance floor, dancing to a Katy Perry song, or at the bar getting drinks and socializing (non-alcoholic of course).

I looked behind me at the boys. Calum was dancing awkwardly at the music, Michael was looking into the crowd, Luke was looking at the ground, and Ashton was looking at me.

“I’m gonna go get a drink,” Michael said disappearing through the crowd.

“I’m gonna go dance!” Calum said, all but running to the dance floor.

Luke looked up from the floor, made eye contact with me for a split second (causing my stomach to turn in knots), and then said, “I’m gonna go with Calum to make sure he doesn’t make too big of a fool out of himself.” I watched him take off in the direction that Calum had.

And just as quickly as we had arrived there, I was alone with Ashton. I looked back at him and he gave me a smile.

“I’m not going to leave you alone. There are too many creeps in the world. Do you want to get a drink, or do you want to dance?” Ashton asked me.

I didn’t even need to think through it. “Let’s dance,” I said grabbing Ashton’s hand and pulling him through the crowd just as ‘Moves Like Jagger’ by Maroon 5 came on the speakers.

I twirled on to the dance floor, letting the music take me over. I didn’t care if anyone was staring or how stupid I looked. I forgot all about any worries or doubts that I had. I just danced. I looked at Ashton who was smiling at me and dancing along. He took my hands and danced with me. I turned around and felt his hands on my hips, pulling me in closer to his body. I felt my self catch my breath as he held my hips and swayed along to the music with me. I turned my head to look at him and he was smiling at me. I looked into his eyes and saw how brilliant of a color they were. He was so hot.

We danced like this through a couple of songs, feeling my heart beat faster every time I felt his hands tighten on my waist whenever someone got near. I saw girls through the crowd give me looks of envy as they caught a glance at my dance partner. I smiled back at them with pride.

Suddenly I looked straight through the crowd on the dance floor to see Calum dancing with a blonde girl that was wearing close to nothing. I laughed out loud when Calum made eye contact with me and winked. Right next to him I saw Luke. He was dancing with a red head girl that was totally engulfed in him. She couldn’t take his eyes off of her, but he looked completely uninterested, which surprised me because she was gorgeous. She kept trying to get him to dance like Ashton and I were, but he refused.

Suddenly he turned and looked directly at me. I felt my stomach drop once again at his glance. His face turned from annoyed to anger. It was the same face he had made at the pool two and half years ago. We looked at each other for a few seconds before he turned around suddenly and tore through the crowd. I followed him with my eyes as he left the dance floor, pushed through the people on the outskirts of it, and went out the front door.

What the hell?

I turned to Ashton. “I have to go to the bathroom.” I yelled into his ear above the music.” He nodded and pointed to the bar. “I’ll get us some drinks.” He said.

I saw him walk away and made my way to the front door. I pushed it open and stepped outside. I looked up and down the street but didn’t see Luke anywhere. I then heard a groan from an alleyway to the right of the club. I followed the sound to see Luke sitting up against the side of the club in the alleyway. He had his knees bent up to his chest, his arms around his knees and his forehead resting on his arms with his face looking down.

I went and stood in front of him, clearing my throat to get his attention. His head snapped up in alarm but relaxed for a second when he saw it was me.

“Luke what are you doing out here? It’s dangerous.” I said to him.

“Leave me alone Rylie.” He said to me harshly.

“Something is obviously bothering you. You can talk to me about anything, I’m your best friend.” I said quietly.

“Not anymore you aren’t.” he said sharply.

“Okay Luke. I don’t understand. You tell me to leave you alone so I did. You act like you don’t know me and I act like I don’t know you. We never directly speak to each other. You told me not to mess up your life with something that happened two years ago, and that’s exactly what I’m trying not to do. But yet somehow, you don’t seem satisfied. You look at me with sadness, and don’t try to deny it; I saw the same look when your hamster died. You get snappy when I’m around everyone. I am confused. What do you want from me? I don’t understand,” I said truthfully.

“Why Ashton? He’s my best mate.” He said in return.

“Are you serious right now? What does that have to do with anything? I am talking about our friendship. Ashton has nothing to with that,” I said getting angry.

He looked at me without saying anything for a few moments. What does he care who I like? If anything he should be happy. Spending more time with Ashton will mean less time around him.

“Just forget it Rylie.” He said finally.

“No. What is it? You aren’t saying something. Tell me what you’re feeling so I can understand.” I demanded to him.

Just then a group of teenagers walked by, interrupting our conversation. We made silent eye contact. I felt my eyes scrunched up with anger. His eyes were droopy in sadness. The group had passed and we still were staring at each other.

“If you want to be friends with me again, then tell me. Until then, I am going to continue acting like we haven’t been friends for 10 years. And yes I like Ashton, but honestly Luke, that’s none of your business,” I said firmly as I turned and walked back into the club.

I was so mad. He was acting like a baby. If he wants me to act for him, then he’s got to let me act instead of being dramatic.

I got back into the club and found Ashton at the bar. He smiled at me and handed me a drink. I took it from him and drank it, just now realizing how thirsty I actually was. Then ‘Tonight Tonight’ by Hot Chelle Rae came on through the speakers. I stopped drinking, yelled out “I love this song!” to Ashton and once again pulled him onto the dance floor.

I tried not to think about Luke as I was dancing with Ashton, but he kept popping up in my thoughts. Why did he act so jealous? It’s not like we have ever thought about each other in that way. At least, I never thought he did…
