Ah, home at last. I missed this place. It was great to finally be back. The boys and I had just released our 3rd album and we all returned to our homes for a well deserved break. The first thing I wanted to do was go to the bakery but I knew that would have to wait. I headed to my mum's house first.
"Harry! I'm so glad you're here. I've been so anxious about your arrival ever since you told me you were you coming home." I engulfed my mother in a hug. "I missed you too, mum." I breathed in the familiar scent of her. I cherished it, as I always did when I saw her. It seemed that I never had enough time with her.
"Well, I know you probably want to go to some of your favorite spots in town, so I guess I'll leave you to it." I could hear the sadness in my mum's voice. I shook my head. "No, I think I'll save that for another day. RIght now, I wanna stay here with you." She grinned at me. Her whole face seemed to light up.
I spent the entire day looking through old photo albums with her, reminiscing over my childhood. She cooed at all of my baby pictures and I could see tears falling down her cheeks. I rolled my eyes playfully and light heartedly picked on her for being such a sap. She laughed at me and playfully smacked my arm, quickly going back to her photo albums.
God, I missed this.
It was late. I knew Aaron would be worried. I usually never got home this late. We had an emergency down at the bakery and it took forever to clean up. I sighed as I unlocked the door, picturing an extremely worried Aaron. Boy, was I shocked when I walked in.
I saw Aaron facing the door, his face red. "I'm so sorry, babe. We had some problems down at the bakery. I know I should have called but we were just so busy and-" I didn't get to finish my sentence. I was shoved up against the wall. "Do you really expect me to believe that lie?" I looked at him, confused.
I tried moving away from him but he had my hands pinned against the wall. "What are you talking about? I'm not lying to you. We had an emergency at the bakery and we all had to stay behind and clean up. Please, let me go." I was starting to get scared.
Aaron gritted his teeth. "You must think I'm dumb. I know that you're lying. So, who is he?" His grip on me tightened. "Aaron, waht do you mean?" He glared at me. "I mean the guy you've been seeing behind my back. Where else would you have been tonight?" I was starting to get agitated. "Gee, I don't know. Maybe at the bakery, like I've been saying for the past ten minutes."
I swore his face had gotten even more red. He released my wrists and I began to rub them. However, I wasn't free of his rage yet. He slapped me and I fell to the ground, cupping my cheek. I could feel the stinging pain. Tears began to spill over my eyes. He grabbed my hair. I yelped. "You act like you're little miss perfect but I know what you really are. You are scum. You are lucky that I'm even with you in the first place."
He let go of my hair and I fell over, my elbows on the ground. I could see my phone not to far away. I began to reach for it when he stepped on my fingers. I screamed out in pain. "Please, stop!" He continued to put more pressure on my fingers and I knew they were broken. When he finally moved, I used my other hand to pick up my phone and hurriedly stood up. I had to get out of there.
I began to turn to run but Aaron yanked my arm and turned me around. He punched me and I fell to the ground, helpless. I knew I would have a black eye the next day. I screamed out in pain, hoping someone would hear me.
My mum had fallen asleep pretty quickly. I was sitting on the couch, watching her peaceful form sleeping. That's when I heard the first scream. At first, I figured that the people below us were watching a scary movie or something. Later, I heard another scream, accompanied by vicious yelling. I could hear a loud thump. That's when I knew something was wrong.
I quickly jumped off of the couch and rushed down the stairs that led to the ground floor of apartments. I urgently knocked on the door. I heard nothing at first so I pressed my ear against the door. I could hear whimpering. Then, I heard a man's voice. "Now, you're gonna be a good little girl and stay out of sight or else you'll be sorry." I could hear more whimpering.
I could hear footsteps moving towards the door so I stepped back. The door was opened by a guy with short, dark hair. "Can I help you?" He said harshly. At this point, I wasn't worried about him. I was more worried about whoever was inside. I pushed past the guy and looked around the apartment. After checking the living room, I walked into the bedroom, and finally into the bathroom. I was just about to leave before I got a thought.
I walked back into the bedroom and looked under the bed and surely, there was a girl. I could tell that she was injured and afraid. She looked as if she was about to cry. "Shh, I won't hurt you." She sniffled and I could have sworn I heard her mumble something that sounded like "You already have". I helped her out from under the bed and carried her bridal style towards the front door. Her head was tilted back so I couldn't see it.
"Hey! Where do you think you're going with my girlfriend? You have no right to barge in here and take her away." This guy was starting to get on my nerves. I gently set the girl down and walked over to the guy before delivering a right hook to his face. "That's for hurting her. I don't ever want you to do so much as look at her again, understand?" He nodded slowly from where he was lying on the ground.
I walked back over to the girl and picked her up again. I walked her out to my car and took her to the hospital. As I was picking her up from out of the passenger seat, I had my first glimpse at her entire face. She seemed so familiar. I couldn't put my finger on how I knew her.
I hurried into the hospital and caught the attention of some nurses. I watched as they laid her down and took her out of sight. I sat down in one of the chairs, trying to figure out who she was.
After almost two hours, a nurse finally came out and said the name that I hadn't heard in years, 3 years to be exact.
I could feel bright lights against my eyelids. I knew I would regret it if I opened my eyes, but I was dying to know where I was. I slowly opened my eyes. I slowly looked around. A hospital. I was in a hospital. I had no idea how I go there. The last thing I remembered was-
Harry! He saved me. I remembered now. He walked into the bedroom and walked right past me at first. I panicked, thinking that he would leave and I wouldn't be able to get out of the house. Thank god he looked under the bed. I wasn't sure how he knew- oh, wait a minute! When we were together, we would play hide and seek when we got bored (I know, so childish). Under the bed was my favorite place to hide, even though he would always know where I was.
A tear fell down my cheek. If Harry hadn't burst in, I most likely would have died in that apartment. I cried as that realization hit me. I cried even harder when I realized that the person who broke me was the one that I now owed my life to.
Everything was such a huge mess. It was all his fault. If he hadn't shown up drunk to the dinner and gotten into a huge argument with my parents, we wouldn't have broken up in the first place. I wouldn't have gotten hurt.
I tried so hard to place all of the blame on Harry, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. A part of me wouldn't allow it.
My thoughts were interrupted when the devil himself walked into the room. I didn't know what to do. Should I thank him endlessly for saving my life? Should I be angry? I'm probably better off not talking.
Harry walked over to a chair and pulled it closer to my hospital bed. He took his hand and wiped the tears off of my face. "I remember now. I remember it all. I just can't help feeling like this is my entire fault. If I hadn't been such an idiot back then, we would probably still be together now. You wouldn't be hurt."
I still didn't talk. I just sat there and listened to him repeat what I had literally just gone over in my head.
"You aren't going back there. Ever. Don't even think of trying to argue with me. I'll handle the moving of yourself and we can both find you a new place." I wanted to argue and say that I didn't need him but that would be lying. I opened my mouth to say something but closed it again and nodded.
For a second, I could have sworn I saw the slightest bit of a smile on Harry's face.
The doctor walked in to check on me. I had a few broken fingers and a black eye. I didn't get hurt that bad. The doctor asked how this happened. I hesitated before answering. "My boyfriend, not the guy next to me, was fine one second but then he started attacking me. I probably wouldn't have escaped with my life if it weren't for Harry." I looked over at him and smiled. He winked back at me and I blushed.
I tried to make my cheeks return back to normal quickly, not wanting the familiar feeling to return. I could see Harry smirking at me through the corner of my eye. I internally rolled my eyes.
"Okay, well you should be good to go. We will prescribe you some pain medication for your fingers and you'll have to keep that cast on for a while. On your way out, you can give the police a description of the man that attacked you." I thanked the doctor as he left as I prepared to leave.
"I suppose you can just stay with me and my mum while we search for your new place. It isn't that far from your old place, I'm afraid. It's kinda right above it." "Really? Anne must have moved there while I was still in America." Harry furrowed his brows. "America? What were you doing in America?" We were now walking towards the officers out front. "Trying to get away from you. Didn't work out very well so I came back here. And the rest is history."
He nodded his head, having went silent when I mentioned that I had been trying to get away from him when I moved to America. I felt bad for bringing it up so I grabbed his hand to with my good one and squeezed it. "You know, you really aren't that bad. I mean, you freaking saved my life. You deserve a medal or a certificate. It could be a 'not as much of a jerk as you could have been' medal."
I almost facepalmed myself when his face paled. I have absolutely no filter. "I didn't mean it like that, I just meant... you know what, even I don't know where I was going with that." This got a laugh out of him.
After describing Aaron to the police, Harry drove me back to the apartments. We went to his mum's and sat on the couch watching TV. When I got tired, Harry showed me where I could sleep and gave me some of his clothes to wear.
I laid down on the bed closing my eyes, hoping to get some rest. A few hours later, I woke up panting and sweating from the nightmare that had ended. I had dreamed that Aaron showed up again and that no one would be able to help me.
I must have made some kind of noise because Harry came in the room. He didn't say anything. He got under the covers with me and held his arm tightly around me. I was able to sleep better this way. Having him this close was familiar and nice. Even if it brought back heart wrenching memories, it was better than terrifying nightmares.
"Aww, would you look at that. I always knew they would end up getting back together." I heard a click and my eyes fluttered open. I could see Anne at the edge of the bed, holding a camera. I smacked Harry and woke him up. "Your mum is creeping again." He groaned, not wanting to get up.
"C'mon mum. We had to deal with this when we were actually together. Can we not do this when we're broken up?" He grumbled at her.
Anne had a confused look on her face. "Broken up? Oh dear, I didn't know you guys were still broken up. I mean, with all the stories, I assumed that you guys were back together."
Harry and I looked at each other, eyes wide. "What stories?!" We both yelled at the same time.
