"Where the fuck am I?"was the first thought that made its way into my head. I tried to open my eyes, but they were frozen. I realized I was freezing. I wrapped my arms around myself to keep warm, but my arms didn't move. "Help!" I tried crying out, but no sounds came out. I realized my mouth wasn't moving at all. Suddenly, a huge wave of pain, numbness, and sadness washed over me like a tidal wave. What was happening to me?
3 hours later
"Alright hon, lay still there, I'm just checkin' your temperature..." A female voice drawled. I slowly opened my eyes. A curvy lady with a pathetic white nurses' dress hovered over me. I opened my mouth to ask where the hell I was, who this lady was, and why I was here. As soon as I opened my mouth, she stuck a thermometer in. "Hmm. 98 degrees. Perfect. Oh yes, and your name is...?" She asked.
"Ellie." I confirmed, glad I could talk. Suddenly, without warning, she yanked me out of my "cot". I stumbled. "Whoops, sorry Allie-"
"Ellie, Allie, Ollie, Mollie, same thing." She muttered.
"Um, excuse me, but who are you, why am I here, and where is my family?" I demanded.
"Oh my goodness, sorry! I'm nurse Tabitha, this is an orphanage, and..." Her eyes teared up.
When I realized that this was an orphanage, I stated crying. Softly at first, then great, big, loud sobs. "At least tell me my sister's okay!" I sobbed.
"Yes, your sister is fine-"
"Can I please see her?" I asked.
"Well, Allie, wait no, Ellie, you can see her once a week at the cafeteria."
"What?!" I cried. She was my sister! As annoying as she was, I wanted to see her! "Fine," I grumbled.
"Anyways, I guess we'll go to your room now."
Nurse Tabitha led me down the hall and stopped at door 44. She opened it. There were two ratty old beds, an empty bookshelf, and a dresser with a dirty mirror. On one of the beds a guy with curly chocolate brown locks and electric green eyes lay there, looking me up and down as if deciding if I was good enough for him or not. Then he went back to whatever he was doing.
"Ellie, this is Harry," nurse Tabitha said, gesturing at the boy, "and Harry, this is Ella. You two will be sharing a room."
Harry looked up. "Hi." He said flatly. He rolled his eyes.
"...and Harry, I expect you to show Ellie around the building." Nurse Tabitha was saying. "Well, I'll leave you two alone to get to know each other." She drawled, closing the door. Once she was out of earshot, Harry said "Well, let's go then. I'll show you around."
I nodded quickly. I didn't want to bother him, he was already aloof enough.
Harry got up and walked out, without holding the door for me. I opened it again, for the first time noticing my fingers. They were black. Frostbite! How the hell did I get that?
I followed Harry down the hallway. It was hard to keep up with his long legs. "So," I said, trying to start a conversation. "How did you, you know, get here?" I asked. At that, he stopped abruptly.
"Don't ever ask that AGAIN." Harry said, glaring at me. We stayed quiet for the rest of the "tour". When we got back, I thanked him. He didn't reply. I noticed he was writing something. "What's that?" I asked.
Great. Just fucking great. When that stupid nurse said I would be getting an inmate, I was hoping for a girl who kept to herself, not some goddamn detective or whatever. Now she's peering over my shoulder like a fucking overprotective mom. "Go away," I say, not looking up.
"Oh. Sorry, I - I didn't know- I just-" she stutters, looking hurt. I roll my eyes. Just go away!
That night, she falls asleep right away. I can't help thinking how cute she looks when she's asleep. I go to sleep thinking of her.
I woke up to Harry hovering over me. "Good morning, Ellie." He said sarcastically. I rolled my eyes. "Let's go down for breakfast." I grabbed my uniform, about to put it on, when I remember that Harry is still in the room. "Out," I said, pointing to the door. "Make me." Harry smirked. "I opened the door and tried to push him out, but he was too strong. I collapsed on his feet. "Get off me," he said, but I swear I saw a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Only if you turn around." I teased. "Fine," Harry grumbled. I changed as fast as I could. When I was done, we went down for breakfast.
At the cafeteria, Harry walked over to a table with four other boys. I stood there awkwardly. "Hey Harry, is this your new 'inmate'?" The blond one said, raising an eyebrow. "Shut up." Harry mumbled, blushing. "Over here! Come sit with us!" A guy with brown hair and a beanie yelled. "Uh, sure..." I said, walking over. Then a voice behind me startled me. "Ah, I see you found some friends- Allie?" I looked up to find a nice- looking lady. "Hi." I said, not bothering to correct her. "My name is Cook Malika." She said. "I'm Ellie." I said. Then I realized something. "Wait - if you're here, who's making the porridge?"
"Shit!" She said, running to the kitchen . I smelled smoke. Before I knew it, everyone was coughing. Smoke poured in, filling the room. "FIRE!!!" Someone yelled. That was all it took to set everyone off. People were running for the exit screaming at the top of their lungs. I ran, but not for the exit. Where was my sister? That was all I did before it all went black. (Again)
