When Monday came Lawrence had his costume all planned out. As he walked through the front door of his school, he saw Eugene waiting for him.
“Hey, Lawrence. You got a costume yet?” Eugene asked.
“Ya, are going to tell me what I need it for now?” Lawrence replied.
“Tyler’s parents are going out of town. So we are throwing a Halloween party. Everyones invited.” Eughen told him.
“On Halloween. Friday to be specific.”
“No you idiot. What time?”
“Be at my place at five and we’ll leave at six.”
“K, my dad should be well past out by five. I’ll just need to make sure Scarlet is all taken care of.”
“Cool, I got to, I’ll see you in class.” Eugene shouted walking away.
The rest of the day went by fast. Lawrence decided to see Claire that day.
“Lawrence, hey.” Claire said with a smile.
‘Hey, Claire.” said Lawrence.
“How is everything?” she asked.
“Good.” he replied.
“So what’s new?”
“Nothing much, just the basics. School, home, sleep.”
“God, I miss school.”
“Total, I mainly miss the interaction with other people.”
“Ya, so this guys keeping you comfortable?”
“Ya, everyone’s really nice.”
“Good, any decent T.V?”
“Not really, just some sports and Spike.”
“Man these guys are cheap.”
“Lawrence this is a hospital, not Caesars Palace.” Claire said with a laugh.
Lawrence also laughed, he enjoyed seeing his sister happy.
“Hey do you remember that family trip we took to the Grand Canyon?”
“That was forever ago, Scarlet wasn’t even born yet. Why do you ask?”
“I was going through some old photo albums and I found this.” Lawrence said, pulling a small photo from his pocket. It was a picture of Claire and Lawrence. Claire was 14, Lawrence was 10. They stood together, with the canyon in the background.
Upon seeing the photo Claire tried up. She always loved her memories before she went into the hospital. Lawrence placed the photo next to her bed.
“I should go, Scarlet’s probably worried sick. I’ll see you around Claire. I love you.” Lawrence said as he walked toward the door.
“Love you to little brother. I’ll see you.” Clear replied.
The rest of the week went fast. Once Friday night came, Lawrence made Scarlet dinner, read her a story, and placed her in bed. He checked to make sure his father was out cold, then he went off to Eugene’s. Eugene’s mother and father worked late, so Eugene let him in. Lawrence came to his room and put his costume on. When he came out to the hall Eugene was waiting for him.
“Jason Voorhees, nice.” complemented Eugene.
“Thanks and you're a gender confused model or something?” joked Lawrence.
“Haha funny, I’m the guy from Twilight.” said Eugene.
“Anna is going as the girl and she thought it'd be cute.” Eugene rolled his eyes as he said it.
They walked down the street until they heard music. Tylers house was a small two story home, but it had a large back yard. That’s where most of the party took place.
They walked through the front door and everyone raised their cups and greeted them. Tyler came up to them.
“Eugene and Lawrence you made it!” he shouted in excitement. “Come on let me get you a drink.”
He led them through the crowd to a table of red cups all the serving materials were behind the table. Tyler stepped behind it and handed both Eugene and Lawrence a cup.
“So what can I get you Lawrence? I got it all Bud Light, Miller Light, Coors Light, I got Vodka, Tequila, Rum.” he could go on forever, but Lawrence stopped him.
“Just soad, I don’t drink.” he yelled over the music, Lawrence looked around and saw that everyone was half drunk. He wasn't a drinker himself, but he didn’t like to judge other people for their decisions. Lawrence had seen first hand what alcohol does to someone and he wanted no part of it.
“Just a soda? Man are you crazy it’s a party.” Tyler was about to say more but he stopped himself, remembering what Lawrence had told him about his dad. “Oh, right. So soda it is.”
Tyler pulled a Pepsi from behind the table and filled Lawrences glass.
“What about you Eugene?” Tyler asked.
“I’ll have a Cuba Libre, but with Vodka not Rum.” he replied.
“One Soviet Cuba Libre coming up.”
After giving Eugene his drink, he came out from behind the table.
“So I see Lawrence is Jason Voorhees and Eugene you're a gender confused vampire?” he said.
“I told you.” Lawrence laughed.
Eugene ignored the comment and continued the conversation. “What are you Tyler?”
“Clearly I’m Tron.” he replied.
“Clearly.” Eugene repeated with sarcasm in his voice.
Not long after Colin showed up, he already had a beer in his hand.
“Hey, lets see. Lawrence is Jason Voorhees, Tyler is Tron, and Eugene is a gender confused teenage girl?” he said.
“That’s three, O man this is perfect.” Lawrence shouted.
“Hey, shut up. What even are you Colin.”
“I’m a surgeon.” he said.
They group of friends talk for a bit then Tyler spotted heather from across the room.
“Hey Lawrence isn’t that the new girl you’ve been hanging out with?” he asked.
“Ya, I’ll be right back.” he told the group already walking away.
Seeing Lawrence Heather met him the rest of the way.
“Hey, Lawrence. Great costume.” she said.
“Thanks you to. You’re Duce?” he said, Lawrence was glad he had his mask on so no one could see how red his cheeks were getting.
“Ya, but after he left the group.” Heather said with a laugh.
“Cool, um, would you like to come and hang with me and my friends?”
“I’d like that.”
They made their way over to Eugene, Tyler, and Colin.
“Heather allow me to introduce you to Tyler and Colin. I believe you already meet Eugene?” Lawrence said.
“Hey.” said Colin.
“Nice to meet you.” said Tyler.
“Good to see you again-” Lawrence knew what Eugene would say next and gave him a glare. Eugene cleared his throat and continued, “-Heather.”
Tyler went behind the table once again.
“Can I get you a drink?” he asked.
“No thank you I’m OK.” she replied.
She looked intently at Eugene’s costume.
“So you're a gender confused thing?” Heather asked.
“That’s four people now. This just get’s better and better.” Lawrence shouted.
Eugene just gave her a sarcastic smile. Not long after Anna showed up. With the whole group there they talked for a bit. To Lawrence’s surprise. Heather got along quite well with his friends. After about twenty minutes the song “Another Way Out” by Hollywood Undead came on.
“Lawrence, I love this song. Come dance with me.” Heather said with a smile.
“What, Oh no I, um, I don’t dance.” he replied.
“Too bad.” she shouted, taking Lawrence by the hand and pulling him to the dance floor.
Lawrence did he best to dance, he moved his feet left to right. trying to make it look like he knew what he was doing. After about two minutes Eugene gave a node to Tyler who made his way to the DJ table. He put on a slow song and took the microphone, “Everyone grab a partner and hit the dance floor, it’s time to slow it down.” he said shooting a wink to Lawrence.
Just then it hit him, that was Eugene’s plan to help. He was about to walk off to confront him, but Heather had already grabbed him and pulled him close. As they danced he looked around, he saw Tyler and Colin with girls he didn’t know and Eugene with Anna. Lawrence made eye contact with Eugene.
Eugene then mouthed the words ‘You’re welcome’. As much as he hated to admit it. Lawrence was thankful, this was a moment he never wanted to end.
After the song, Heather and Lawrence talked to Eugene and Anna for a bit. After about twenty minutes, the party started to die down. Lawrence looked at his phone and saw that it was time for him to go, Lawrence said his goodbyes and left. He left Tyler’s house at about one and arrived at his place at two, seeing both Scarlet and his father were still asleep, Lawrence made his way upstairs. When he entered his room he was too tired to do anything more than fall on his bed and fall asleep.
