The next day, Lawrence sat with Eugene before school. They talked for awhile, then Heather approached them.
“Hey Lawrence,” she said.
He was about to respond, but Eugene cut him off.
“Well hello to you, New Girl.”
“I’m sorry?” she replied a little disgust could be heard in her voice.
Eugene gave a slight chuckle before continuing, “Did I stutter?”
Lawrence stopped the conversation before it escalated any further. He said goodbye to Eugene and went off with Heather. They talked for a bit and then went to class. Lawrence first class was Art, his least favorite.
The teacher gave them a partner assignment to his surprise he was paired with Heather. He didn’t know why, but on that day for some reason that he couldn’t understand, the thought of being with her both excited and scared him. There was something about her that he just couldn't understand. He had even felt it that morning, but what was it? What could it be?
Even with his head in this knot, he pushed aside the thought and focused on the assignment. It was to draw your partner. Heather went first, Lawrence sat in his chair and asked if there was a pose she wanted to draw him in. She said just to be himself. After about fifteen minutes of sitting there she was finished, as she showed the drawing to Lawrence he was amazed on the detail she had put into it.
“That’s amazing.” he said, with a slight stutter.
“Thanks, so now you draw me.” Heather replied with a slight smile that showed her incredibly white and purely teeth. He smiled back and grabbed a pencil. He did his best at making the drawing and on more than one occasion he would stop and be mystified by her golden hair or her bluish-green eyes. Only Heather’s asking if he was OK would snap him back into reality. Lawrence’s drawing took twenty minutes and his wasn’t near as good as Heather’s.
“Well, how’s it look?” asked Heather.
“It looks like it was drawn by a drunk five-year old.” He replied with a laugh.
Hather also laughed, he was about to continue when the bell rang. Lawrence went to Science, while Heather went to Math. As Lawrence entered the class he saw Eugene and Colin, along with Eugene’s girlfriend. She was the same age as both Eugene and Lawrence, but he never understood what it was she saw in him. She knew of all the things Eugene had done. Then again so did Lawrence and he still found a reason to call him a friend. Eugene and Lawrence made eye contact and Lawrence slowly made his way over to them.
“Hey, Walker,” Colin said.
“Hey,” replied Lawrence.
“Lawrence, you remember Anna right?” asked Eugene.
“Ya, I remember her.” said Lawrence, giving the girl a complimentary smile.
They all talked for about five minutes then the teacher walked in, all the students took their seats. The teacher lectured them about weather, or earth, or some other nonsense. Lawrence wasn’t paying attention to know. He was too busy trying to fix the drawing he had done of Heather. He wanted to make it perfect, he didn’t know why he needed to make it perfect, he just did.
After Sciences came lunch, Lawrence sat with Eugene, Colin, and Anna.
“Hey, where's Tyler?” asked Lawrence.
“I have no idea,” replied Eugene.
After about a half hour a student came up to Lawrence, it was some student he had never really talked to before.
“Lawrence, hey, um Heather sent me with a message. She wants you to meet her by the gym.” said the student and once he was done he walked off.
“Why would Heather want to see me?” Lawrence said under his breath. As he did so his cheeks turned a slight pinkish. The only person to see that was Eugene.
“Is something going on between you and the new girl?” he asked with a large smile across his face.
“What me and Heather? No, no. I mean we're friends, but-” Lawrence tried to say more, but Eugene cut him off.
“Just go.” he said.
Lawrence left the lunch room and made his way to gym. Standing in front was Heather, seeing Lawrence she ran to meet him.
“Hey,” she shouted.
“Hey, you wanted to see me?” replied Lawrence.
“Ya, I was hoping I could get your help with something?”
“Sure, what do you need?”
“I have this big math assignment due tomorrow and I couldn’t figure it out to save my life. I asked around and everybody says you're good at math.”
“I do OK. I’ll help you.”
“Great! Thank you so much!”
“No problem. So was there some place you wanted to meet after school?”
“I was thinking your place.”
At the sound of that Lawrence tensed up. He could not begin to imagine how his father would act. Especially if he was drunk.
“Sorry to say, but we can’t stay at my place, we’ve got exterminators all day.” Lawrence lied through his teeth.
“Really? What for?” asked Heather.
“Um, parasites. Big nasty blood sucking tikes.”
“OK, well you could meet me at my place? If you don’t mind?”
At that moment Lawrence's heart skipped a beat, and yet he could not understand why.
“Um, ya, ya that sounds great, so I’ll just come over after school then?” he said.
“That’ll be great. I’ll see you after school.” she replied.
After they made their plans Lawrence went to the rest of his classes, but he couldn’t focus. All he could focus on is what he would say, what he would do, and how he would do it. His mind was shooting off scenarios, a million a minute. After the final bell, Lawrence was filled with fear, but he still did not know why. It made him slightly angry.
It filled him until he reached her home, then it was adrenaline. He took his steps small, one at a time, until he reach the door. Lawrence knocked and waited. After a few seconds the door was answered by whom Lawrence could only conclude to be Heather’s mother.
“Good day, I’m here to see Heather,” he said with slight hesitation.
The woman called to Heather, she came down and upon seeing Lawrence asked him to come in. She took him to her room and sat at her desk. Lawrence stade standing. He looked around, in shock. Her room had posters and concert t-shirts of Hollywood Undead.
“You're a Hollywood Undead fan?” asked Lawrence.
“What? Oh ya, there sort of my favorite band. What about you?” Heather replied.
“Ya, I’m a fan. I was just a little surprised that you are.” He said.
“You’re a fan?”
“Ya, I got all there albums.”
“OK so answer this: Danny or Duce?”
“I prefer Danny.”
“What, how can you say that Danny is better than Duce.” Heather said with a laugh.
They discussed the band for a while, then Lawrence helped her with her assignment. He sat next to her for what felt like forever. She then asked for his help. He stood behind her and looked over her shoulder. The smell of her perfume filled his nose, it was intoxicating. She then looked over at him and smiled. Her teeth showed and were whiter than ever. Her eyes looked directly into his. To Lawrence time had seemed to stop and so did his heart. It was that moment when he knew why he had been feeling the way he had been. He had very strong feelings toward Heather. He hoped she felt the same. He was about to say something. He didn’t know what, just something. He was, but the realization of how late. He pulled away from her.
“I’m sorry, but it’s late and I think I should go.” he said, his cheeks were a dark shade of red as well as Heather’s.
“OK, I’ll see you tomorrow.” she yelled to him as he was going out the door.
“I’ll see you.” he yelled back, now jogging down the road.
Lawrence walked to his front door. His father was standing in the doorway.
“Where were you?” he asked anger in his voice.
“Out.” Lawrence replied running up to his room.
“I asked you a question Boy.” Lawrence’s father shouted.
“And I gave you an answer.” he yelled back, slamming the door behind him and locking it. He then laid down in his bed and stared up at his seling. Thinking about what he was going to do tomorrow at school.
