2. 2. Hospital
Nuala's breath hitched suddenly.
There was a loud irritating beeping sound that filled her ears, intensifying the dull throbbing in her head. She had no idea where it was coming from or what it was. It wasn't that of an alarm clock; it was less monotone.
As her heart skipped a beat, the machine cause the noise lost its rhythm for a moment before going back to a consistent, beep, beep, beep, beep...
Straining to open her eyes they slowly slid open ever so slightly to see that she was in a blindingly white room. She squinted against the light above her, willing for her eyes to adjust to the brightness. That's when she noticed that she was laying down. She was unable to see the whole room and tried to get up, but like opening her eyes, she struggled with that too.
She gave up after a while and just laid there in defeat. She had no idea where she was and the fact that she could barely move only worried her more.
How had she gotten here, and what was she doing here, was all that was running through her mind.
Nuala eventually gave up trying to figure out all the questions that were running through her mind and was now concentrated on the beeping. She glanced to her left, where it was coming from and saw it. A heart monitor was placed next to her with an IV running from it to her wrist.
'So I'm in a hospital.' She thought. It still didn't add up but for now at least she knew she was safe. Well she hoped so.
Suddenly she started feeling tired. Her eyes lids were feeling heavy and before she could do much to stop herself she was fast asleep.
She didn't know how long she had slept, but this time when she woke, there was someone moving around in the room. She couldn't see them for her current position and tried to sit up, and this time she did, but it caused her head to ache madly at the movement.
She clutched her head and groaned, gaining to attention of the person in the room with her.
"Oh you're awake." They said.
It was a young woman with short curly brown hair. Her bangs were poorly trimmed and looked as though a 5 year old had chopped them. Her dark blue eyes lit up at the sight of Nuala sitting up.
She was dressed in dark blue trousers and a similar blue tunic-style top to match. She wore a pair of white scrubs to accompany them.
Nuala put two and two together and concluded that she was a nurse. That and the fact that her name tag said 'Nurse: Jenny'
"I'll get a doctor to come an check on you." Jenny said while exiting the room.
Nuala looked at her arms and saw several unknown cuts and bruises that covered them. Her pale skin making them look worse than they really were. They seemed to be healing well though, which made her wonder how long she had been in the hospital.
"Hello Miss." A voice said, causing Nuala to look up from examining her arms to the door. A man in a white coat stood holding a clipboard in his arms while walking towards her slowly. His dark brown hair framed his face and helped define his square jaw. His light brown eyes were scanning the clipboard past his square rimmed glasses.
When he reached her, he looked up from the clipboard and smiled at her. "I'm doctor Milline, how are you feeling?"
She opened her mouth to speak but her throat was too dry for words to properly form.
"Oh dear forgive me." He chuckled. He reached to the tray next to her bed and picked up a glass of water. "You've been out for a while, of course you probably need water."
She sent him a small smile to thank him as she took the cup from his hand.
The feeling of the cool water running down her throat felt refreshing. To her it felt like she was drinking water that god had handed to her himself.
She gave the cup back to the doctor when she finished and he placed it back on the cart.
"Better?" He asked.
She cleared her throat. "Yes, much better thank you."
Her voice sounded weird. It was very hoarse and scratchy.
"Do you remember what happened?" He asked her, a calculating look on his face.
She shook her head.
"Do you remember who you are?"
She went to answer, but realized that she didn't. She didn't remember who she was or what her name was for that matter.
Her brows furrowed as she tried to think, but it only caused a sharp pain at her left temple. That cause her to wince.
"If you don't remember don't force it." Doctor Milline told her. "Your memories will come back in time."
"What to you mean?" She asked, her brow furrowing even more in confusion.
"You have temporary amnesia Nuala." He explained.
"Nuala?" She said.
"Yes, thats your name," He said and pointed to the chair on the other side of her bed. On it was a dark blue backpack with buttons and charms on it. "We found some of your information in that bag that came with you. It had basics things like date of birth, name, and stuff like that. You also had a few clothes in there."
"Why am I here?"
It was clear by the cuts and bruises that she was injured, but she wanted to know how this came to be.
"You were in an accident." He said bluntly.
"When? And how long have I been here." She had so many questions and so far the answers she was getting weren't making sense to her.
"Roughly about a month ago." He told her. "You went into a coma that we thought would last longer, but you woke up earlier than we expected."
She nodded and went to ask another question but doctor Milline stopped her. "You need to rest. I'll answer any other questions you have after you rest."
She realized that she was feeling tired again and nodded. "Okay."
He smiled at her before turning and exiting the room. Leaving Nuala by herself trying to make sense of things.
'I was in an accident,' She thought. 'What kind of accident, and why the hell don't I remember it."
She felt a throbbing sensation at her left temple and reached up to feel it. Her fingers made contacted with 4 staples. She ran her fingers against the cool metal and felt her head throb again, making her hand shoot away from her temple.
It seemed she had taken a pretty hard hit to the head during the accident. Which to her explained the temporary amnesia.
Nuala sighed and laid back in bed, hoping that sleep would take over soon and prayed that when she woke up again she would learn more about what was going on.
