I heard Spongebob's voice echoing through the room. I rubbed my eyes and opened them slowly. The light from the window came shining down on me, making me squint my eyes. When I tried to get up, I felt a sharp pain in my lower back. The couch wasn't the most comfortable place to sleep, but after last night, anywhere was better than sleeping with Seth. I took a deep breath and noticed the aroma of pancakes and coffee in the air, making my stomach growl.
"Hi mommy!" Katelyn's sweet little voice rang. She never took her eyes off the TV. She soon started giggling, making a smile come across my face.
"Hi sweetie!" I said and stretched out a little bit. I winced in pain as the muscles in my back shot darts through my body.
"Why did you sleep on the couch?" she asked, cocking her head to one side.
"Well, after I read to you last night, I decided to watch some TV, and I guess I ended up falling asleep out here."
"Oh." she said and turned back to her cartoons. I slowly stretched out a little bit more and got up. I sauntered my way into the kitchen and saw Seth making breakfast. I looked at him, noticing that he must have just showered because his hair was wet. It wasn't like him to make breakfast. The only time he did it was when we had one of our physical fights, like last night's. It was his way of saying 'I'm sorry.’
"Good morning." he said with a warm smile while flipping a pancake.
"Morning." I said as I went to the cabinet to get a coffee cup so I could have my daily dose of caffeine.
“How are you feeling this morning?” he asked, his warm smile turning small.
“I’m in a little pain,” I state, and guilt completely takes over his face. “The couch isn’t the best place to sleep. My back is a little sore.” I said simply. I watched as relief washed over his face. I didn’t want him to feel guilty, even though he should. We just need to put it behind us.
"Why didn't you come to bed last night then?" he asked.
"After I read to Katelyn, I decided to watch some TV and I guess I fell asleep." I sighed.
"Oh, do you want some Tylenol for your back pain?" he asked.
“Yeah, that would be great.” I said. He takes out a little medicine bottle from the cabinet and hands me two Tylenol pills. I pop them in my mouth and drink some coffee to chase them down. He smiled at me and put some pancakes on a plate. "Would you like some?"
"Yeah sure," I said, grinning.
He placed the plate in front of me, "Thank you. They look delicious." I said and looked at him. When he looked back at me, his blue eyes were full of guilt.
"I'm so sorry Val. I didn’t mean to do what I did. I'm really ashamed of myself. I've been a terrible boyfriend and father and I want to make a fresh start. I want to try and change for you and Katelyn,” he said. He walked around the island and stood in front of me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and placed his hands on my lower back. I wrapped my arms around his neck. "I love you Val.” he said and he kissed me. He tasted of mint this time. This was the Seth that I fell in love with. The one that was nice and caring. The one who never hurt me. Sadly, I only see him after he hurts me.
"I love you too, Seth." I said, then buried my face in his chest. We stood there for a few moments, then he let go of me and went back to cooking. I turned back to the pancakes that were calling my name. I took a bite out of them.
"Hmmm, this is really good!" I said licking my lips.
"I’m glad you like them,” he said and smiled. He put some on a plate and set it down on the table. “Katelyn, breakfast is ready!" he called to her. Within moments she was racing through the kitchen to him. “It’s on the table for you.” he smiled. She turned around and headed for the table.
"Hey," I said and she turned around to look at me, "What do you say?"
"Thank you daddy." She said, sweetly.
“You’re welcome, Sweetheart.” he smiled, and brought the butter, syrup, and a plate for himself to the table. I brought my breakfast to the table. Besides the occasional “pass the butter or syrup,” we all ate quietly.
"Hey Seth, you wouldn’t mind if I went out shopping today would you?" I said and he looked at me and sighed.
"For what?" he asked, shoveling another forkful of pancakes into his mouth.
"I wanted to go food shopping.” I said, and he gave me that ‘really’ look.
"We have food." He stated simply.
"But we need more. Besides, Katelyn has been asking for spaghetti for a while now and I thought I could make it tonight for dinner." I said. He looked at me for a moment, taking in what I had just said. He was thinking, probably thinking of a way for me to not go.
“Katelyn’s birthday is coming up. Why don’t you just wait until then to make spaghetti for her?” he asked.
“Well, because she wants it now. Like I said, she’s been begging for spaghetti. She asked me for it yesterday.” I said. I couldn’t really think of any other reason why she would need it right now.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” he replied.
“Why is,” I started to ask, but my question was interrupted by ringing. It was Seth’s phone. He pulled it out of his pocket and answered it.
“Hello…Oh hey…yeah sure…oh…okay yup… see you then…bye.” He, said then pressed the lock button on his phone, ending the call.
“Who was that?” I asked, curiously.
“It was my co-worker. I have to get something at work. They said it was urgent.” He said. He got up and placed his plate in the sink.
“Are you leaving now?” I asked.
“Yeah.” He said, grabbing his coat and slipping on his shoes.
“When will you be back?” I questioned.
“I don’t know, just mind your own business. Stop asking so many questions.” He spat, walking towards the door, then slammed the door shut. I turned to look at Katelyn. She pushed a piece of pancake around on her plate.
“Sorry honey. I cant make spaghetti tonight, but I will definitely make it for your birthday, I promise,” I said. She didn’t say anything. She didn’t even look up at me. “What’s wrong?” I asked, brushing her hair behind her ear.
“Why is daddy always mad?” she asked, still not looking up at me.
“Daddy is just under a lot of stress that’s all. His job is very difficult.” I state simply.
“Oh,” She said. She put her fork down on her plate. “I’m not hungry anymore. Can I go watch TV?”
“Yeah, go ahead.” I said. I grabbed her plate and put it in the sink.
"Zayn!" Liam said, nudging my shoulder.
"W-what?" I asked, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
"We're trying to practice and you keep falling asleep. Our next gig is in two weeks! We need to make sure this is perfect!" Liam said. I looked around and noticed that I fell asleep at the microphone again. I don’t know how I do it, it just happens. Four sets of eyes stared at me waiting for an answer.
"I'm sorry, lads. We've been practicing day and night. I'm just really tired." I said and rubbed my eyes again.
“Well, we can see that.” Louis said smiling jokingly. I smiled back at him.
"Come take a shot. That'll wake you up." Belinda said. Belinda is a waitress at the local pub that we perform at every Friday. We've all quickly become friends with her. She was a curvy girl, but also very petite. She had long, chocolate brown hair and bright green eyes. She was very beautiful, and at one point, I thought I fancy her, but I decided it would be better to remain friends. I didn’t want to wreck what we already had.
"Thanks love, but I don’t think alcohol is really what I need right now." I said. I looked around the bar and noticed a man and a woman at the bar. The man had dirty blonde hair. He was tall and slim. He had somewhat of a muscular frame. The woman was small. She had long black hair and was very petite. “Hmm…” I said to myself.
“I think we all deserve a break.” Niall said, snapping me from my thoughts.
“I strongly agree. I’m gonna go back to the flat and take a good long nap.” I said, and grabbed my coat.
“We’ll met you there later!” Liam called as I headed for the door.
“Alright. See you then.” I called back, and left out the door into the cool air.
