Almost kisses will forever be the most awkward thing in Veronica’s mind. Almost anything’s really. You could almost kiss, date, have sex with, or do anything with someone and sometimes it’s really awkward, and sometimes it’s just a little bit. No matter the situation, it’s just downright awkward. Which of course meant that while Veronica and Travis ate their lunch, it was very uncomfortable and tense.
However, eventually Travis had an idea. “When you’re done eating, go get changed. I have a surprise for you.”
“What could be a bigger surprise than you taking me to the beach?”
Travis laughed. “If I told you, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise now would it.”
“Oh fine, I’ll be right back.” Veronica got up from her seat and disappeared across the beach with a bag with her clothes in them towards the change room. When she came back, Travis was in a different pair of shorts and the shirt he had been wearing earlier.
He was turned away from her, looking at the now more noticeable sunset. Its mix of warm red, yellow, and orange mingling with Travis' tan complexion made Veronica's breath hitch. His features in the dim lighting of the day were more intensified. His cheekbones sharper, the curves of his lips more prominent, his jaw and shoulders more broad. He almost looked like a different person Veronica spoke quietly, just in case it actually wasn't him. "I never really pegged you for a sunset lover."
Travis looked over his shoulder to see her standing with her arm crossed across her chest and a hand on her shoulder, a small smile on her lips. “I’m a sucker for beauty.”
He watched as she walked over and stood next to him, her eyes direct towards to sunset as well. She spoke in a hushed tone. “Yeah it really is beautiful.”
“Does no justice to you however,” It came out before he could think about it, and he quickly turned away from her to look at the sunset as well.
“You’re lying skills get better and better every day.” She said, her eyes still looking forward.
“I wasn’t lying.” His hand reached for hers, and he was very shocked when she didn’t flinch or pull her hand away. Instead, she intertwined her fingers with his and that’s when he remembered that earlier in the day when he held out his hand to her, she had taken it would hesitation. Even last night, when he put his arm around her, she didn’t push him away. Travis hopped that that meant she was now comfortable with him, but he didn’t really get his hopes up.
Veronica squeezed his hand. “Well then thank you, that’s very sweet of you.”
Travis didn’t say anything back before he started guiding them away from the sunset and further down the beach. Veronica assumed they were headed to her next surprise and followed willingly, her eyes widening when they reached their destination. It had to be impossible for someone not to notice the large amusement park that had been placed on a very large deck, but of course Veronica hadn’t seen it until just now and she turned to Travis with a large smile. “You are the best. Oh my god.”
She looked back at the wonderful park filled with fun rides. A large Ferris wheel was placed in the center of it all and rose higher than any of the other attractions.
“Which one do you want to go onto first?” She heard Travis ask. Her eyes began searching around until she found it, they landed on a tea cup ride and she rose her hand to point at it. “That one.”
He didn’t say anything for a moment, but eventually sighed and nodded. “Your wish is my command.”
Veronica inwardly cheered when she saw that there wasn’t much of a line which meant they were on pretty quick. This also resulted in her laughing like a maniac as she saw the grumpy look on Travis’ face. He was a lot bigger than the tea cup they were in and his knees were pretty much up to his chest. It was truly a sight to see.
“If I could move my arms, I’d flick you.” He threatened, only making her laugh harder.
“I’m sure you would.” Veronica reached up and pinched one of his cheeks, knowing he couldn’t do much about it. Her hand then cupped his cheek, “Thanks for making this day perfect. I really needed this.”
His hard look from earlier, now softened. “It was nothing, don’t mention it.”
He held back from frowning when she removed her hand from his cheek, but then smiled when she placed her hand over top his on the seat. That was when the ride began moving, and a huge grin broke out on her face. This ride was her favourite. She and Gwen went on it whenever her and her family went to amusement parks, and she hadn’t been to one for nearly 4 years. She really didn’t know how to thank Travis. He had just given her the best day ever, effectively making her forget her problems and just about everything that had been bothering her before. Tomorrow would of course be different, but she didn’t want to worry about that now.
After going on the teacups for another 5 times, Travis decided to call it quits. He pulled Veronica to a bunch of other rides, ignoring her protests and requests to go back on the teacup and eventually, after 15 minutes of persuasion and 5 of begging, he got her onto the Ferris wheel.
“Travis why are you making me do this?” She asked, clutching onto his arm as they entered the carriage that would soon send them into the sky. “I’m afraid of height dammit.”
“I’ll be right here with you,” He reasoned. “You have nothing to be afraid of.”
They both sat down and just as the carriage began to move, Veronica’s legs swung over Travis’s lap and her arms went around his neck, her face then being buried in his shoulder. “Get me off right now!”
Travis laughed while wrapping one arm around her waist and the other around her legs so she didn’t fall from his lap. “See, there. I’ve got you, so you’re safe.”
The carriage shook again and Veronica held onto Travis tighter. “No I’m not!”
“You’re okay baby-doll.” He said.
“I would’ve been more okay on the ground.” She whined.
“But then who would I cuddle with if you were down there?” Travis teased, nuzzling his face in her neck and then inwardly cheering when he heard her giggle. He was hoping that making her laugh would make her more calm her down some, and he was glad he was getting somewhere when she took her head away from his shoulder.
She looked at him with a pout. “You’re horrible.”
“And you’re cute.”
“And you’re annoying.”
“And you’re stunning.”
Veronica grabbed a fist full of his hair and tugged on it lightly, earning a strangled moan from him. His hold on her tightened and he began leaning down towards her.
This time Veronica noticed much sooner than before, and she didn’t move. She didn’t want to. The thought of kissing Travis didn’t repulse her, or scare her. It only enticed her with curiosity and wonder at what it would be like. What would it be like to open up to Travis? He had already showed to her that he was nothing like Jake, and he clearly understood her a lot better than Jake, so what harm would come of this? So she let him. She allowed their lips to meet to meet in a sweet innocent kiss that managed to still set her insides to flames. His lips were soft and inviting as they overlapped hers in a sweet embrace. It was only when the very tip of his tongue ran across her bottom lip did she pull away from the kiss, her breathing heavy and cheeks flushed.
Travis looked no better as stared down at her. “Sorry.”
Veronica’s brows furrowed. Was he seriously apologizing for kissing her? “Why are you sorry?”
“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
“No, it’s okay, I liked it.” She grabbed his head and pulled him down for another kiss. Travis grinned against her lips and didn’t waste time kissing back.
Best day ever.
