As soon as I sat down by Fred, well, after Dumbledore's speech, I was pestered with various questions. I glared at them for talking all at the same time. They quickly quieted.
"If you want to know what happened you'll find out later. Let's just listen." I rolled my eyes
"Now that we are all fed and watered, I must once more ask for your attention, while I give out a few notices. I would like you to welcome you to Hogwarts. This year we have an unusual situation. We have a previously undiscovered student with us now. She will be taking part in the annual sorting along with the first years. So! Mr. Filch, the caretaker, has asked me to tell you that the list of objects forbidden inside the castle has this year been extended to include Screaming Yo-yos, Fanged Frisbees and Ever-Bashing Boomerangs. The full list comprises some four hundred and thirty seven items, I believe, and can be viewed in Mr. Filch's office, if anybody would like to check it. As ever, I would like to remind you all that the Forest in the grounds is out-of-bounds to students, as is the village of Hogsmeade to all below third year. It is also my painful duty to inform you that the inter-house Quidditch Cup will not take place this year. This is due to an event that will be starting in October, and continuing throughout the school year, taking up much of the teacher's time and energy- but I am sure you will all enjoy it immensely. I have great pleasure in announcing that this year at Hogwarts.......May I introduce our new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher? Professor Moody. As I was saying, we are to have the honour of hosting a very exciting event over the coming months, an event which has not been held for over a century. It is my very great pleasure to inform you that the Triwizard Tournament will be taking place at Hogwarts this year. I am not joking Mr. Weasley, though, while you mention it, I did hear an excellent one over the summer about a troll, a hag and a leprechaun who all go into a bar.....er.....but maybe this is not the time.....no.....where was I? Ah yes, the Triwizard Tournament.....well, some of you will not know what this Tournament involves, so I hope those who do know will forgive me for giving a short explanation, and allow their attention to wonder freely. The Triwizard Tournament was first established some seven hundred years, as a friendly competition between the three largest European schools of wizardry-Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. A champion was selected to represent each school, and the three champions competed in three magical tasks. The school took it in turns to host the Tournament once every five years, and it was generally agreed to be a most excellent way of establishing ties between young witches and wizards of different nationalities- until, that is, the death toll mounted so high that the Tournament was discontinued. There have been several attempts over the centuries to re-instate the Tournament, none of which have been very successful. However, our own Departments of Magical Co-operation and Magical Games and Sports have decided the time is ripe for another attempt. We have worked hard over the summer to ensure that, this time, no champion will find fatal injury or death. Let's begin the ceremony!" Dumbledore's voice echoed throughout the Great Hall
"When I call your name you will come up here and sit in this chair. I will place the Sorting Hat on your head and it will shout out a house. You will then proceed to that table and sit down. Quietly!" McGonagal shouted
Fred looked over at me. I sat there, looking at him in confusion. Then it hit me. I blushed in extreme embarrassment. McGonagal tapped her foot impatiently and I walked up to the front.
"Great first impression!" The voice of the boy who shouted this was very familiar but I shrugged it off
"Shut up, Malfoy!" Hermione replied, rolling her eyes
"Mudblood!" Malfoy glared across the Great Hall
"Really?" Hermione scoffed, "After all these years you still can't come up with something better than mudblood?"
"Mister Malfoy! Miss Granger!" McGonagal glared at the both of them, "Please do NOT shout across the Great Hall. Miss Tonks, I would appreciate it if you got up here before our first years die of old age."
"Yes, Professor," I blushed again and hurried up front
McGonagal placed the Sorting Hat on my head. I was so absorbed in my thoughts that I almost didn't notice when the Hat began to shout out...
Cheers rang clear in the Great Hall. I walked back to the table in awe of the applause I received. As I sat down people reached out to shake my hands. This made no sense; I hadn't earned this much attention since I was five. My parents had a system that made my siblings and I try to beat each other out for attention. Great, huh?
Fred grinned at me and I calmed down. I would not break down in front of all these nice people. I was in Griffyndor!
"So?" Fred asked once we were in the common room
"What did Dumbledore say?" Hermione elaborated
"Well," I pondered, "he didn't say much. He did say that my parents want to see me either over Winter holidays or the summer. I don't know if I want to go, I mean..."
"You can do whatever you want," Fred smiled at me taking my hand, "You don't have to met them until you're ready."
