A couple of months later.
I was sound asleep when I heard the phone blaring in my ears. I let it ring for another minute until it started getting annoying. When I finally stopped, it rang again. I glanced at the clock. The time was almost three o’clock.
I picked up the phone and all I could hear was Alex.
“Did you get my message?”
“No Alex, what’s going on?”
“It all just happened too fast.”
“What do you mean? Calm down Alex, and tell me what happened.”
Finally, he sternly said, “Come my house.”
He hung up the phone.
I didn’t care what I was wearing at this point. I put on some jogging gray pants, and a plain white shirt.
When I went driving my fingers were thumping on the wheel. Alex’s house was pretty far compared to where I lived. There isn’t as much apartments, but it’s still crowded.
By the time I arrived it was four.
My hand knocked on his door. There was a couple of shoveling, and Alex opened the door. He was not looking good compared to me. Alex’s hair was scattered, and his eyes were watering.
Since he didn’t say anything, I let myself in.
We both sat down on the couch, and didn’t say anything.
“Remember John,” he said quietly.
I half smiled. “Yeah I remember him, the english lad.”
“Well, I just got a call from his mom saying that he passed.”
“What was the cause of his death?”
“I don’t know, she just told me, that was it.”
“What’s the band gonna do?”
“I don’t know, they just tweeted now that everything was going to be okay.”
“You’ve got to be joking me, he was my idol, his voice was incredible, I didn’t even get to really talk to him.” I didn’t realize it, but my voice was getting higher and higher as I spoke.
“I know, I just as shocked as you are.”
“I haven’t told Jack yet, he was his friend too.”
“Al-” I was interrupted.
“Please don’t tell him.”
The light created a reflection in his eyes, and I could see how generously concerned he was.
“If you do it will break his heart. Hell, he was more of a friend than I was.”
“Were about to go on tour, I don’t want to bring him down.”
“I understand, but don’t you think he’ll feel the same way if you didn’t tell him.”
“ I know, but I don’t care. I will tell him, just not right now.”
I noticed that we were faced to face now.
I’d never seen Alex break down, and now that I did, I understood why I couldn’t tell Jack.
“So it’s just like that, he’s gone. I wish I could’ve known more about him.”
“I’ll tell you.”
“What do you mean-”
“More about him. Whenever we went out, and he got drunk, we would be able to talk about anything.”
He paused and hesitated. Alex looked down, wondering what to say next.
“He said that you were very nice, and that you reminded him of someone he knew. John told me about how you sung and played on the guitar-”
I instantly felt nervous at that moment.
I think Alex noticed, because he turned to me and said, “He thought you were beautiful.”
I felt a little guilty, and curious at the same time.
“Most of the time I just let him talk for a while. I would occasionally nod in agreement, and tell him a story that was related-”
This time he looked into my eyes again.
“At that moment I agreed with him.”
“Alex-” I paused.
He leaned in, and I could taste the alcohol on his lips.
I didn’t know what to do, but I didn’t want to leave. This was the moment he was vulnerable the most. I felt comfortable around him, and I could feel myself slowly drifting to sleep. I hugged Alex, and whispered in his ear.
“I’m so sorry.”
