Their World in my Hands

My choices can change the lives of the ones I love, the ones I hate and the ones I don't know. I am a witch, an undetectable. It's all new to me, I could lead us to greatness or to devastation and I'm not ready for the power, but I have to be. Everyone's relying on me, I have their world in my hands and I cannot let them down...

5. The Leaky Cauldron

I woke with a start, trying to savour the moment of happiness I had had in my dream, it was all so vivid, professor Mcgonagal, the owl, the letter...

Opening my eyes, I saw a small old black suitcase. was this actually real? I closed my eyes again, shook my head and reopened them. It would be February 3rd, it would be the first day of school. My suitcase was still there, the acceptance letter was perched on top and for the first time I saw something inside. It was another letter, the hogsmede letter, I ran into my mum and dad's room, my dad was just getting ready for work. I quietly pointed at the letter and gave him a pen I found on a nearby bench, my mum was still snoring slightly but I could hear the scribble of my dad's signature. He mouthed 'good luck', winked at me and them did something I've never seen him do before, he disappeared into thin air, almost like magic...

Walking into my room, there was a knock on the front door. I slipped on an aqua blue and white tribal sweater, a white scarf and a pair of leggings before going to peer out the window. Professor Mcgonagal was standing there, outside my house, I grinned, looking completely stupid and rushed downstairs with my suitcase.

"you're ready then?" She asked "Certainly" I replied. I ran into the living room, said a quick goodbye to Hayley before heading back down the hall. For a second I didn't want to leave my pristine clean home, with white walls, white chairs, white rugs. My bedroom full of the muggle toys and games I've learnt to love. Then I thought about the great hall, the astronomy tower and the forbidden Forrest before walking out the glossy front door confidently.

When we reached the end of the street Mcgonagall took my hand and placed it on her elbow before disappearing, I suppose it was disappearing, it felt like being squeezed into a small tube, not a feeling I enjoyed, a brief second later, we were out the front of the leaky cauldron in the busy streets of London, never having been outside Australia, I tried to take in as much as possible before being ushered inside by a firm hand.

"You haven't had breakfast have you?" Asked Mcgonagall "Maybe we should have something before entering diagon alley" Having breakfast with professor Mcgonagall in the leaky cauldron is something I wouldn't have even imagined in my wildest dreams.

We sat at a small table in the back of the room and ordered some crumpets. While eating, something was troubling me. "Excuse me professor, how do the muggles know about Harry Potter when the Ministry kept such strict rules about performing magic in the presence of a muggle?" I asked, she let out a deep sigh, as if it pained her to tell the story and said "remember this, people don't always make the correct decisions. There was once a student at hogwarts... she was in the same year as Harry Potter. Her name was Hannah Abbott, she thought that muggles should know about his story and the magical world so she could sell them magical objects for personal profit. In her school years, she became an unregistered animagus, a flea, she sat in the shadows, traveling in people's hair and clothes, following his every move. She released some books under a different author, so she wouldn't be arrested. Muggles everywhere started running at the gates of platform 9 3/4 and flushing themselves down toilets. She was eventually found and has now got a life sentence in Azkaban. People use her story as an example of what happens if you reveal our world to anyone, the Ministry had a lot of trouble hiding our world, and still do."

We ate our food silently, when we were finished, we stepped out to the courtyard. "Stand back" said Mcgonagall. I took a hesitant step back and she tapped a few of the bricks with her wand, her actual wand. The bricks separated, they locked together in different places creating an arch, I inhaled a deep breath and took my first step into diagon alley...
