I didn't tell anyone about the message. Not yet. Maybe not ever...
As the others came in they didn't seem to notice how their books and clothes were rearranged and were sat neatly in piles or how the ink spills and fur from Emily's cat were gone from their maroon bedspreads. In fact, they didn't seem to notice anything, not even Rose.
No one saw my nervous glances out the window that night, how I double checked that my wand was beside my or the way I tried to catch them looking at me, waiting for a reaction...
That night I had a restless dream about prophecies and windows smashing over and over in my head and Tahlia ripping my snap cards and Emily examining my clothes with a smile. Even James came along, flying, trying to save me from the nightmare but he couldn't get through the window because Rose and Albus were guarding me, making sure I couldn't leave before I saved them...
Because of this, I had quite a bad second day... In charms I almost burnt my hand when I was practicing the fire-making charm...
"Now, Now Miss Williams..." Said Professor Goshawk as I tried to heat my teapot in our double charms lesson...
"From lighting a warm hearth to igniting a Christmas pudding, the Fire-Making Spell is always useful around the wizarding household. However, the ability to produce fire with the flick of a wand can be dangerous to your fellow students and worse, your books." She said to the class, "We do not want any mishaps..."
In potions my dad avoided me again... When I produced the perfect shrieking solution, he acknowledged me but not in a fatherly way... He just said "Well done miss Williams..." As if it were the first time he'd met me.
That night I sat in the same chair I had on the previous day and unrolled a piece of parchment to do my potions essay on. Albus came and sat opposite me and began his too. He was soon followed by Rose who collapsed on the chair and heaved a great sigh... "To! Much! Homework!" she said as I unscrewed the lid on my ink pot "So! So! Bored!" "Sometimes your not much like your mother are you Rose?" I asked, not taking my eyes off the blank piece of parchment "Nah, I take after dad..."
I shuffled through 'Magical Drafts and Potions' looking for an acceptable sentence. I found one and began to write "The properties… of moonstone… and its uses… in potion-making…." I heard a voice over my shoulder and literally jumped out of my seat, spilling the contents of my ink pot which was resting on my knee all over my robes... "Seriously James, give me a warning!" I yelled as I grabbed my wand out of my back pocket "Scourigify" I said, pointing my wand at the ink pot and hoping that nothing peculiar was going to happen.
"So, what are the properties of moonstone and its uses in potion-making?" He said, obviously pleased with himself as he kicked Emily's cat of the remaining seat and slid into it. "That thing gets everywhere."
"Is there a reason as to why you're here?" I asked
"Quidditch try-outs." He replied "Monday. Get ready, the announcement is on the pin-up board but I've realised you don't check that much..." I was going to ask him how he know this but thought better of it.
"Shouldn't you know the properties of a moonstone...what year are you in?.."
"So you did this last year?"
"And you don't remember?"
"Why not... We're being marked on this like it's an O.W.L subject, didn't you?"
"I forget things." I rolled my eyes and returned to my work. Since I'd come here, I'd been so much more cooperative with boys. I never used to talk to them.
I finished my essay and measured it. 12 inches exactly. The required amount. I rolled it up and journeyed upstairs to my dorm. I spotted James and made a huge effort to get his attention before examining the pin-up board, noticing straight away what he was talking about. Right over all the other notices was a picture of Albus, he started off doing work when an explosion went off, followed by smoke coming out of his charcoal blackened forehead... I laughed, feeling lighter than I had the previous day. James May not know the properties of a moonstone but he could work magic...
