Everybody in the Great Hall were murmuring, some arguing quietly, some smiling, and some biting their nails out of nervousness. They kept conversing, until eventually Professor Elliot hushed them down.
“ All right. Now, each of you will be sorted into one of the four houses, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, and Slytherin. Each house has a different speciality. As I call out your name from the roll list, each and every one of you will come up here and sit on this stool, as I place the Sorting Hat on top of your heads. This hat will declare which house you will be placed in, based on the qualities you possess. Okay then... Let the Sorting Ceremony begin!”
Professor Elliot began calling out names of first years from the crowd. After each name, a wide-eyed kid would walk out and sit on the stool. Professor Elliot placed the hat on their heads and it called out one of the four Hogwarts Houses.
I knew what each of the houses specified. Hufflepuff consisted of the most friendliest of the group. Ravenclaw was made up of the smart and the clever. Gryffindor stood for the brave and courageous. Slytherin was filled with the most cunning and ambitious people. Together, they made up all the qualities that the witches and wizards of Hogwarts were endowed with.
“Scorpius Malfoy,” Professor Elliot called.
Malfoy proudly marched up to the stool. He snatched the hat out of Professor Elliot’s hand and placed it on his head himself. I raised an eyebrow at his over-confidence. The second the hat touched his head, it bellowed, “SLYTHERIN! SLYTHERIN! Slytherin to the core!”
The Slytherin table cheered and applauded with joy as Malfoy jumped off the stool and made his way to his new house members with his wide beam of delight.
“Rose Weasley,” Professor Elliot said next.
Rose gasped, squeezing my hand once before rushing to the front. Professor Elliot placed the hat on her head and the room waited impatiently for the hat to choose.
“Ha! Another Weasley! The first half-blood of the family. You’re quite smart, I see. You have a friendly nature as well, but you have a quality of bravery. Any house that you are put into would inherit a very good student! All of your bloodline has been put into Gryffindor so I know just what to do with you... GRYFFINDOR!” the hat shouted.
The Gryffindor table broke out into a loud cheer as they clapped for Rose. She walked over to the table of Gryffindors proudly, as she turned out to give me a quick glance and mouthed that it was okay. Next, Professor Elliot called out my name. My heart started beating faster than its normal rate. I walked slowly to the top and took my seat on the stool.
“Ah…………….. you come from the Potter family. Your father gave me a hard time to choose. You aren’t so difficult though. You are brave and courageous with an average mind. GRYFFINDOR!” the hat screamed with full enthusiasm. I jumped off the stool and skipped to the Gryffindor table as they were cheering for me. I scanned the table for Rose as she gave me a heartwarming smile, which relieved me. I ran and plopped into the vacant seat alongside her. Professor Elliot ran down the rest of the names as the respective Houses cheered on the Sorted first years.
At last, the name calling was finished. All of a sudden, like a loudspeaker, the headmistress, Professor McGonagall, shouted as loud as her lungs would allow her to,
“Let the feast begin!”
