13. Chapter 13

Paige's POV; Harper was quiet the whole ride, I guess mentioning her dad really got to her. I felt a sudden overwhelming feeling of guilt. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to loose a dad at such a young fragile age, I don't know how she'd held up really.

I stared at the house as we drove up the long driveway, it had a fresh coat of paint, looking recently done. But the garden looked sad, definitely not as bright as it used to be, I guess they've had other things on there mind.

Harper opened her car door, and moved around towards the front of the car, I hoped out and joined her.

"Look Harper I'm truly sorry" I truthfully said. I frowned I hated seeing her sad.

"It's okay, I guess I have to start talking about him, can't ignore it forever after all he was my Dad" she let out a long sigh, as though she'd been holding her breath.

We got to the door, and we walked in, the house interior had changed tremendously, the usual baby pink walls, were coated over a fresh clear white, bright paintings and photos hung the walls. The furniture was updated, and the normally cluttered space was free of junk, opening up a huge amount of space. While making it look a lot neater. Unuseful items were rubbished.

"Want something to eat?" She asked.

"Okay, thanks!" I politely answered

We walked towards the kitchen, I could hear mumbling and high pitched laughter.

I peeked my head through the opened door. An older man was sitting behind the island counter. I felt Harper immediately stiffen beside me, did she not like the presence of another man in her house?

"Awh! Your back, hello Paige! David and I thought we should celebrate!" She gleefully cheered.

She look at the man, whom I'm guessing was, Dave across from her and her eyes started to sparkle as she looked into his.

"Celebrate what?" Harper asked in a dull voice. She almost sounded bored.

"I decided to change schools, and applied at Parkwood, I got the job! Your old school, as a year eight teacher I'll be taking over Mrs Jackabees class! She's moving and they need a replacement, I start next semester."

"—what?" She silently mumbled, Harpers voice raised as though only just functioning Kirsten's words, "Congratulations mum I'm really happy for you! You'll do great! She cheered running over to give her mum a big tight hug. She didn't even take one look at David, not remembering his presence.

She rushed to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of pop, tim tams and S&V Smiths chips from the cupboard . She turned around, her gaze drifted towards Dave, he mouthed something at Harper and she quickly grabbed my hand tightly and we rushed up the creaking stairs towards her room.

Harpers POV;

"I decided to change schools, and applied at Parkwood, I got the job! Your old school, as a year eight teacher I'll be taking over Mrs Jackabees class! She's moving and they need a replacement, I start next semester."

The words ran through my head like glue. I couldn't concentrate.

"What?" I mumbled, accidentally.

Mum had gotten a job! That's great, it'd be even better if David wasn't here.

"Congratulations mum I'm really happy for you! You'll do great!" I spoke up, feeling happier than when I first walked into the kitchen, plus Dave couldn't hurt me with people around, I'll make sure we are never alone. I ran over to give my mother a huge supportive hug. I didn't dare even glance at Dave, I didn't want to see him so close to me ever again.

I walked towards the fridge picking out the best food, opened chocolate biscuits, drinks. Closing that, I grabbed more from the cupboard. Salt and Vinegar crinkle cut potato chips, mine and Paige's favorite!

I turned around, Dave was staring at me, my mother looking through the white draws for baking trays.

"Remember" he mouthed silently, a sneaky smile spread across his lips. "I'll get you" he finished. I shook, my heart was pounding, it's a wonder no body could hear it, it's rung loudly like a bell in my ears.
