"Oh look who it is..."
I rolled my eyes with a groan, keeping my arm around Maddie and trying to lead her another way.
"Not so fast Payne" Donnie says as he steps in front of us.
"Get the hell out of the way."
"Or what? You gonna get your body guards on me?" he taunts as he flicks his head behind me where Preston stood by the van.
I scowl at him, mouthing 'Go away'. He curtly nods and gets into the car before driving away. They are so annoying and overbearing about this security thing. They take Maddie and I wherever we need to go and follows us around, making sure we're 'safe'.
Wherever the paps are so are Preston and Paul. I quickly take in my surroundings and indeed see a few camera people.
Why can't they leave me alone?
"I can't wait 'til next year." Donnie's voice brings me back to reality. "Why's that?" I ask in the most bored voice, just to get him out of my face.
"It's gonna be fun messing with your little brother. Logan, is it?"
I fight back the urge to drop kick him. I grind my teeth together to stop my actions. "It's not something to be proud of. Being held back for another eighth grade year isn't something to look forward to dumbass."
He opens his mouth for a comeback but...
"Can you just move?" Maddie's soft yet annoyed voice demands more than asks to our frequent tyrant.
He looks at her with a slight smirk on his face that makes me wanna pound his face in.
"Why hello angel-face, you're just the girl I wanted to see."
She sighed and slowly removed my arm from her shoulder.
"What do you want?"
"I think I can, you know, show you a good time."
I held back a laugh. Is this guys serious? Does he really think Maddie would go on a date? With him?
Not with those skills she isn't.
"Where would we go?" she asked.
Oh hell no.
"Madison." My voice was firm in warning.
"Anywhere you want sweetness."
"Alright meet me after school and we'll talk" she said and walked past him to get into the building.
I pressed my lips firmly together and narrowed my eyes after her.
"Looks like I stole your girl, Payne."
I cut my gaze to him and grabbed his shoulder with one hand and drove my fist into his stomach with the other. He released a breathless grunt. "Your face will be next if you even think about that shit."
I left him to collapse to the floor and ran after Maddie.
When I caught up with her I yanked her shoulder so she'd face. She gave me an annoyed look.
"What the hell was that?"
"Like I'd really go out with him. Do you know me?"
"What was that shit about meeting him after school?"
She stopped walking and faced me, completely serious. "Are you messing with me or did you forget what we're doing after school."
I scratched the back of my neck, "The first one?"
"We were supposed to be going to the music festival downtown but since you obviously don't remember so I guess there's a change of plans" she seethed and walked away.
Oh shit, I forgot.
I decide to let her cool off. She might yell at me if I tried talking to her again.
I walk to my first period class and lay my head down. It's the last day of eighth grade year, we're not learning anything.
At lunch I see Maddie sitting at our usual table stabbing at her salad. Her scowl is funny but I wouldn't dare say that to her. I sit cautiously across from her and twist the cap on my doctor pepper.
"You can't drink that" she mumbles, not even looking at me.
"What? Why not?"
"It says, as clear as day, that there are soy and peanut products in it."
I sigh, damn allergy. I slide the bottle over the table to her. "You have it."
"I'm sorry okay? I forgot, people do that sometimes."
"You promised we'd go."
"And we are going as soon as you get your tampon out of your ass."
She abruptly stood up, banging her hands on the table. Everything went black for a second when she slapped me.
Damn, girl had an arm on her.
"I'll go by myself you asshole!"
Everyone stared at our scene. Maddie huffed and slung her backpack over her shoulder before walking out of the cafeteria.
I need to learn how to shut up.
I went home after lunch. I was so done with that and just looking forward to summer break.
Leaving school early was a bad idea because as soon as I got home and stepped into the kitchen, I saw my parents getting ready to have themselves a little private time.
I leaned against the door way with my arms crossed over my chest and cleared my throat.
They were surprised to see me and quick to situate themselves. "Why are you home from school so early?" mom asked.
"Didn't feel like staying" I shrugged.
"That doesn't give you th-What happened to your face?"
I brought out my phone and checked my face in the reflection. I sighed when I saw the huge pink tinge on my left cheek.
"Did you get in another fight?" she asked, concern in her eyes. When I didn't answer she continued, "Jamie it's the last day of school, why the hell are you fighting?"
"I said it was nothing." I didn't want to tell them that Maddie slapped me. That's embarrassing and plus they'd want to know why she did it and if I told them I knew they'd be disappointed.
"What. Happened" she questioned.
I bit my lip, hesitating to answer.
"Seriously, Jamie, if you got into another fight you need to tell us" dad added in his usual soft, reassuring voice.
"Maddie slapped me" I mumbled.
"What was that?"
"Maddie slapped me okay?!"
My mom looked at me suspiciously while my dad tried hard not to laugh.
"And what's so funny?" I groaned.
"You had to do somethin' real stupid for her to hit you" he chuckled.
Mom nudged his side, telling him it wasn't funny.
"What did you do Noah?" my mom demanded.
"Woah, chill, nothing serious. You know Maddie is sensitive."
She sighed, "Yeah, whatever. You must've made her really mad and you better fix it."
I nodded before leaving upstairs to my room.
I tried texting her but she wasn't answering. I called her a couple times too.
I changed into some dark jeans and black shirt before grabbing my phone and leaving my room, deciding that I'd just talk to her in person.
"I'll be back" I called over my shoulder before opening the front door. "Where are you going?" dad called back. "Maddie's" I yelled and closed the door, walking a good fifth teen minutes until reaching her house. Of course Preston was right by my side making sure I was safe -.-
I knocked on her door and Milo, Sydney's boyfriend, answered. This guy was a huge creep and I didn't see what Ms. Sydney saw in him. I mean, Maddie's mom was a pretty lady and could do so much better than this guy.
"Noah, is it?"
"You're the boy picking up Madison?"
I rose my eyebrow in confusion. "What?"
"Um, I don't know anything. She's usps-"
"Is he here?" I heard Maddie's voice yell from down the hall. Before he could answer he was pushed out the way and Maddie was revealed but her smile dropped as soon as she saw me.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
"Where are you going?" I asked, ignoring her question completely as I looked at what she was wearing.
Her hair wasn't straightened for once and in its curls, she had on some skin tight black jeans and a small gray tank top on that barely covered her stomach.
Wait...is that a belly ring?!
"To the music festival" she plainly replied. "You were serious about going by yourself?"
"No, someone is taking me."
I narrowed my eyes at her..."Who?"
"None of your business and you-" she stopped mid-sentence, looking over my shoulder. "I gotta go" she said, closing the door and walking past me. I turned to see a guy stepping out the passenger side of a car and on closer inspection I saw that it was Donnie.
I grabbed her arm and turned her around, "Look, Maddie, I really am sorry just...come with me and we'll go together like I promised."
"The thing about that is...you never seem to keep those promises." She yanked her arm back and walked to the him, greeting him with a swift hug. I watched as the car pulled away with my best friend inside.
"What are you still doing here?"
I looked up to see Maddie standing in front of me with a suspicious look on her face.
"I was...um...waiting for you to get home."
"You should just hear me out Maddie."
"I think you should go home."
I stood and watched as she pulled out the key to unlock her door.
"Leave! I'm in a good moon right now and you're ruining it! I'm tired and hungry and...just leave okay?!"
"A-alright" I swallowed.
"We'll talk tomorrow when I feel like it."
I nodded and turned to walk away. I was about five minutes into the walk when the van pulled up.
Paul insisted I hop inside and so I did, thinking I was a horrible friend the whole ride home.
