"Oh" I hear Tom groan "Not again... The lift's broken." He curses quietly. I fumble in my bag for my phone, and turn on the flashlight app. Tom looks at me, his eyes twinkling.
"Now we're both going to be late." I say, trying to lighten the mood.
"Not the best start, eh?" He says "Your first day, stuck in an elevator with me."
"Could be worse." I reply. Another radiant smile. He laughs softly.
The lift creaks and drops about a metre, and I cannot stop the scream that is forced from my mouth. The phone drops from my hand, landing flashlight-side down.
"Are you alright?" Tom whispers, reaching for my hand and squeezing it.
I cannot speak, and I feel as though I'm suffocating. My legs give up, and I sink to the floor. I can hear Tom searching for my phone, his hand still grasping mine, and suddenly the beam of light pierces the air.
Now he can see the tears slipping down my cheeks.
"Shhhhh" He says, leaning over and wiping the tears from my face "Don't cry, darling...I'm so, so sorry this had to happen to you. If there's anything I can do--" He sits beside me, and wraps his arm around my shoulders, pulling me towards him.
I rest my head on his chest and try to take a deep breath.
I can do this. I tell myself. I can make it out of here.
