"Look, if we ever manage to get out of here, I would love to buy you dinner. Or at least a coffee." Tom said "You deserve it, Kathleen."
"You don't have to..." I say, but inside I am screaming with joy "Anyway...How are we going to get out of here?"
"Uh... We could try climbing on top of the compartment?" Tom shrugs. I kick off my shoes and stand up, grasping my phone.
"Lift me, please." I say "I'm gonna see how far we are from the next floor." Tom interlocks his fingers and I step carefully onto them. He lifts me with ease and I manage to open the trapdoor at the top of the compartment. I shine my phone into the shaft above. It seems endless. We're trapped between floors, but I can almost reach the doors of the next floor. A thought suddenly hits me.
"Tom...you wouldn't happen to have a pen and a small scrap of paper, would you?"
"Yeah, why?" Tom lowers me back down.
"SOS note. I'm going to slide it through the doors of the next floor. Hopefully someone will see it."
Soon, note in hand, I am once again reaching for the doors of the next floor. I climb onto the dusty top of the compartment and jam the note through the gap, as high up as I can.
"Now we wait." I say, dropping back into the lift.
