Every since I can remember I lived in Brookly all my life. But every summer, my family always traveled to upper New York. My mom's an architect, so her days are always busy, and my dad works from home as a writer, but in the summers he and my mom both work at some camp as.... I guess mentors, or something? My older brother, Fred, and sister Athena have both gone when they were like six? But I've never been there, and I kinda don't really care. I have swim meets every summer and hang out with all my friends. So I never make the trips to New York. However, that wasn't going to happen this year.
It started when the faucet in the bathroom "accidentally" broke off spraying Athena in the face. But it wasn't my fault.
"Athena hurry up I need to use the bathroom!!" I screamed pounding on the door.
"You can't rush perfection." she called back.
"I wasn't I'm rushing you!"
"I need to use the bathroom!"
"Then you'll have to wait!"
Ugh, I hate sharing a bathroom, I hate Athena always taking forever. She doesn't need that much time. I bet she'd be really mad if she there was like a hairspray shortage or something. Ugh I wish she would just-!
"Agggh!" Athena screamed from inside.
I saw water spilling from the bathroom into the hallway.
I bolted from the scene no longer having the need to use the facilities. I knew Athena would pin it on me some how. I hadn't done anything wrong, but I couldn't explain the water. I ran to my room and locked the door. Like the scared twelve year old I am, I ducked underneath my bed. I still didn't know how why I was afraid, but I didn't want to be caught in this. I was pondering possible hiding places when a knock came to my door.
"Pen?" I heard my dad ask.
"Do you want to unlock the door and tell me what happened?"
My dad was my best best friend and even when was in trouble and he didn't yell or scream at me, he talked to me and then we discussed consequences. I climbed out from underneath and went to unlock my door, I stood faced to face with my dad. My Grandma Sally said I was the spit image of him. Same dark hair, same smile, same beautiful green eyes. I'm the only one with green eye, my brother and sister have gray eyes like my mom. And while Athena has dark hair like me, Fred has blonde hair like mom.
"So a fountain in the bathroom?" he laughed.
"Dad I didn't mean to do it, don't even think I did it. It just-it just happened! I swear!"
"Calm down, Pen, I'm sure the faucet came lose that's all. Are you okay?"
I took a deep breath. My dad always was looking out for me, he'd never gotten mad at me or anything like that. Ever.
"PERCY!" I hear my mom scream.
"Uh oh." my dad's grin widened. "Mom's home."
My dad wasn't afraid when my mom yelled or was angry, he was calm and honest. I guess that why my mom never could stay mad at him. He kissed my forehead then went down stairs to tame the storm that was my mom. Fred walked past my room looking very dressed up and I knew he was up to something. I poked my head out the door and saw him walking to the end of the hallway. So being the curious sister that I am I walked behind him, I guess he didn't realize I was there and opened the window to the fire escape and started to crawl through.
"Sneaking out I presume?" I said in my best impersonation of my mom.
He turned around his face white as a ghost as he turned around. When he realized it was me and not my mom he shook his head and grinned.
"Keep your mouth shut Penelope." he said easing himself out.
"Why don't you just go to the movies with Athena? You know, through the door."
"I'm not going to the movies half pint. Going to a party."
"Oh mom will love that story.
"What mom doesn't know won't hurt her. Besides it's not the kinda party she'd want to know about."
"What's in it for me?"
My brother sighed. The longer he argued with me the longer it took him to leave. He pulled out his wallet and handed me a ten.
"Have a good time." I smiled. Reaching for the money.
"Eh wait wait. What comes first?"
I raised up my right hand and took the solid oath.
"I promise to keep my trap shut and I can neither deny nor confirm you where a bouts, it's like I never saw you."
"Very good. I'll be back if it get too rambunctious, or something else sparks my interest." he said giving me a smile.
"Like Valerie Bach?"
"Keep that trap shut."
I mimicked locking my lips and throwing away the key.
"Good." he laughed.
He handed me the money then disappeared into the night. I closed the window then walked down stairs to wait for my best friend to arrive. As I walked down the hall I passed my parents room, and heard them talking.
"You can't keep avoiding the fact she has both genes!" I heard my dad say.
"Percy all of them do. "
"But she's the only one with Poseidon's gift.
"So? That doesn't mean she is part of the prophecy, Percy, we have made it 15 years without war from the Romans, and stayed hidden from monsters why would we start now?"
"Its not war, a child from the Romans was also part of it. You heard Rachel last year, she's never wrong about a prophecy."
"There can always be an exception!" My mom argued.
"Annabeth, there would be nothing wrong with Pen, going to Camp Half-Blood for the summer, The Graces daughter and Tyson and Grover will be there, let Pen have a chance. We'll all be there, but she needs to train." Dad insisted.
"She is fine here. I will teach her."
"With your schedule? She'll be attacked before she can defend herself!"
"Enough Percy, Penelope is fine here, she doesn't need to go. I only let Frederick and Athena go because I was sure they weren't the prophecy."
"So why exclude the possibility that Pen, is or isn't the one?"
"Because she is only twelve years old!"
"When we were twelve we were battling Gods, and monsters! We are demi-gods, and so is Pen, and so are Athena and Fred. It's in our DNA there is no avoiding it."
I heard my mom break down and my dad sigh. I had no clue what any of this meant but this was huge. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. What was a demi-god? What prophecy? And camp?Who said I was going to camp? Too many questions and I was about to give my parents my piece when the door bell rang. I ran downstairs to answer the door.
"Pen I think it the pizza!" I heard my dad calling to me.
"I'll get it!" Athena shouted, pushing past me.
She reeked of perfume, and hairspray. This could only mean one thing. George. George was our pizza guy that Athena was madly in love with him. I ran down the hall to see Athena's face fall when she saw it was my friend Jo.
"Hi Athena," she said.
Athena ran upstairs, muttering to her self. I shook my head and let Jo in.
"She seems pleasant, was she expecting Georgie?" she mocked.
"Knock knock." said a voice.
"Speak of the devil." Jo laughed.
"Hey kid." George said to her. He looked at me and presented my pizza.
"Here you go Smallstuff, one large pepperoni, mushroom, and black olive with a side of blue cookies."
George worked at my dad's favorite pizza place that would make blue cookies especially for him. My dad liked blue foods for some reason.
"Thanks Georgie, how much we owe you?" I asked reaching for the pizza money.
"Twelve fifty." George said.
"Is the pizza here Pen?" I heard dad call.
"Yeah!" I hollered up the stairs.
Suddenly there was a thud on the stairs.
"Uh oh." Jo said grabbing the pizza and cookies and ducking into the living room.
"I'LL GET IT DAD!" Athena shouted.
"Oh boy. I'm sorry in advance." I whispered to George.
Before he could say anything I was knocked to the floor, and Athena was standing over me.
"Hi George," Athena said in her "flirty voice".
"Hi Athena." George said a little startled.
"Here's the money." She said handing him the bill.
"Thanks, oh here let me help you up." George said, reaching down to help me up.
Athena's face went dark with jealousy.
"Seven dollars is your change, have a good night Smallstuff." George said as he took his leave.
"Good bye George!" Athena shouted.
George waved to her and then speed off in his car.
"Hmph." Athena stormed up the stairs glaring at me.
I closed the door, and laughed with Jo. My funny red headed friend was munching on the pizza already.
"Save some for us." I teased. "DAD! MOM! PIZZA'S HERE!"
"Don't have to shout, Penelope." My mom said as she came into the living room.
"Mom, will you let me know when Gina gets here?" Athena called still fuming.
"Yes I can!" Mom called back.
There was a knock on the door. And that's when my Friday night was turned into the worst night of my life.
