The boys leaned over the railing with papers and pens.
"Hey, over here Gordie." they called. " Will you please sign our papers?"
"Aw, come on." Tommy said," It's so crowded we probably won't be able to get one."
To there surprise, Gordie ignored the crowd and came over to them. The boys gaped at him with open mouths.
"Hiya fellows!" he said," Do you want to come on a tour of the locker rooms?"
"Do we?" gasped Tommy," We would love to Mr. Howe. Thank you very much!"
"Yes, thank you," chimed in the rest of the boys.
Brady looked closely at Gordie Howe as they climbed over the railing. He was a strong, muscular man.
"Well boys," Gordie said, as they walked to the locker rooms, "What are your names?"
"I'm Brady," and, he gestured and said," This is my cousin Tommy, and his friends John, Greg, Duncan, and Sam."
"Nice to meet you Mr.Howe." they all said politely.
"Now boys," he said with a twinkle in his eyes," I'll only take you to the locker rooms if you promise to call me Gordie."
"Of course, Mr., I mean Gordie." said Brady." I have never played hockey before, but watching you today I could tell you were really good."
"Why thank you, uh…"
"Brady," Brady supplied.
"Yes, yes. Thank you Brady. You know how would you like to skate with me on the ice after every one leaves? I have extra stuff. You all can."
"You will make our dreams, Gordie. We would love to! Thank you very much." Tommy said politely. "However, don't feel obliged to do this if you don't want to."
"I'm not obliged. I want to. I can see in you that you all love hockey deeply. Even this one," he said, gesturing towards Brady," Even though he has never played, I can tell that he loves it."
Hmm, Brady thought to himself. Maybe that is true. I have enjoyed watching it, and when we were playing I even knew what to do. Maybe hockey is a talent I have, that I have never discovered.
The six boys and Gordie pulled on their skates, and grabbed their sticks, and headed for the ice.
Brady could not believe his luck. Here he was skating with a professional player, where professionals skated, wearing Gordie's old skates, and he, never knowing hockey before today.
"Ok boys. What do you want to do?"
"We would love some pointers, Gordie," Sam said, speaking for the first time," But if you don't want to we are totally fine to."
"That sounds like a great idea, Duncan. It's Duncan, right?"
"Uh, no. It's Sam. Duncan's the red head over there."
"Sorry, fellows. I'm slightly bad with names." he gave a short laugh." So help me out, ok?"
"We will, don't worry." Tommy replied, " Now lets skate!"
Laughing, the six boys and Gordie stepped on the ice.
