2. Lost in the mind

“Wake up!” Tyler was standing in front of me, shaking my shoulder, and looking weirdly scared. “What?” I stared at him for a second. “You were-“ he started, he then smiled at me, and laughed. “Never mind-“ He went back to my bed at collapsed on it. Why was he scared?

Some days passed after that. Mostly containing me fighting several of different training partners, and learning new ways to use my powers. The nights didn’t go any easier, and the dreams continued. Tyler – who was sharing my bed with me – knew something was wrong, but he didn’t ask. He just calmed me, when I woke up during the night. I guess he knows I don’t want to talk about it… I got a message this morning, from Adrian. He asked to come over, to explain the instructions to me. I just said he should just come in, and then we’ll see him there. I just didn’t know before Jeremy reminded me that I was training with the vampires today. I also need to talk to them. “Remember” Jeremy whispered as he put on his coat “that not everything will go as planned”. I bit my lip. Dad does believe that everything will happen after the instructions… myself I’m sure I’ll spend more than one night in a prison cell. “Can I make you two, go out and check on the pond? Weird smoke has been appearing from it the last few days-“ dad noticed. Tyler looked confused at me, as I nodded. The pond is the only place where non-shadows can’t live expect for the castle. When dinner was done, we went to the eastern cellar, where the armor is placed. “What is the pond?” he asked. “The pond” I started “Is the only place living creatures can exist in this world… Everything else gets eaten by Nadow”

Tyler tells…

“Nadow?” She was running back and forth in the little cellar. No light could come in, only few candles were lit, and the room was filled with weapons and armors. She took different parts from different armors. “Nadow is the name we gave them” she said “It stands for Not Shadows” I still felt confused. “Are they dangerous?” I asked. She stopped for a second and then smiled. “Yeah – it’s a hard thing to kill them. They devour everything living. They can exist in different forms… liquid, gas, solid…” “Why is the castle then safe?” I asked. She smiled at me. “I’ll show you, but first we’ll have to change” She closed the door after her to the cellar, while I was in there. I started putting on the things she had given me. The little light there was didn’t help me much, and most of this was heavy. But not that much anyway. When last piece was on, I heard a little beep and then the weight disappeared. “Are you done?” she knocked on the door. “Yeah”. She opened up and smiled. I followed her. “Sorry, we’re going to the top” the stairs was leading up to a tower. There was almost no room to getting up there, but when we first arrived the view was amazing. I could see every corridor with windows to the garden, the horses walking around, the green grass, the flowers… Even the fighting circle looked amazing from this view… Then I lifted my head a little bit. When you look above the castle, the only thing you can see is dirt. It’s like a desert, but darker. Like everything had been in contact with oil, the few trees I could see was dark and without any leaves, they looked fragile and dead. Ponds of dark matter was randomly laying around, and I could see a skeleton of a horse, near one of them. “It looks dead-“ I noticed “Are we going to go out into that?”. She nodded, and opened a little coffin containing a telescope beautiful golden and dark tree brown. She started looking in it, after adjusting it a bit. “Take a look” she said. I had to bend my neck a bit, but could see amazing. Something green… after a minute my eyes adjusted. “Trees? And… water?” It looked so… misplaced. “You see” she started “The only reason why that placed is saved from the Nadow is because the flowers give a scent that repels them” She then smiled. “We’re trying to plant more of them around the castle, and make them spread, so that the Nadow will be repelled and the world can bloom again”. I kept looking at it. It’s beautiful. “And after that?” I asked. “The world will bloom… and maybe a new race will appear. We have found skeletons of unknown creatures…” She started to walk down, and I followed her quick. “Why don’t they come in here?” “Because we set up some lights-“ she noticed “We can’t see the shine from them, but actually it shines so bright that the Nadow can’t come near. Will we’ll be out, we have to wear some bracelet that does the same. That way we won’t get attacked” We went into her room, and I sat on the bed. She was changing, and in the believe she was done I turned around. She was having her back to me, and I noticed just under her back, red marks was showing all around. I didn’t say anything, but turned around again. Maybe… I slowly and silently removed the duvet, and looked at the sheet. There weren’t much, but there was blood. I covered it up again, and looked under the bed. Does she clean it? Under the bed little pieces of paper towels was showing. Many of them with a red color going through. I took a deep breath. Something is up with her, and she doesn’t want to tell… “Done” she jumped on the bed and attacked me from behind. I couldn’t help but laughing a bit. “Then let’s get going, before Adrian comes-“ Her mood seemed high and happy, but as we got on the horse, and took the bracelets on, I could see it hurted her to sit on the horse. We went through the gates, and out into the dead desert. “What do you call this place?” I asked. She shrugged her shoulders. “It haven’t got a name”. I smiled “Then why don’t we give it one?” The horses was fast and the pond came closer and closer. “What do you want to call it?” she asked smilingly. I thought about it for a second, then I smiled. “Bloom”. “Viox” she said. “Viox?” I asked. She nodded. “Viox is… lighters language in the older version, and means bloom”. She was smiling as she said it. I repeated the word over and over. Viox. I love it. When we reached the pond I was stunned. It looked like something from a fairytale. “We hope that maybe this world will all start looking like that” she said. There were bodies just outside the grass. “They got eaten pretty fast” she noticed. We walked to the pond, and could see a little fire. She started to clean it up, and walk around to check everything. I just relaxed a bit, and smelled the flowers. When she was done, she laid herself beside the pond. “We can relax here a bit-“ she noticed. A sound of water moving made me look instantly on the pond. “What is that sound?” I asked. “The fish-“ she noticed “They survive by staying here”. I laid myself beside her. “I noticed you haven’t talked to Adrian while being here…” I said. She smiled and looked up at the sky. Not a cloud was showing, but the sun was shining bright. “Except from about Amalion-“ “It’s because if we… keeps on having this… relation between us, it could affect the outcome of the marking. Therefor we are trying to be as objective towards each other as we can”. I nodded, and smiled as I closed my eyes…

A long time ago…

“You should tell them, sweety” Diamond said seriously. Diamond is my best friend; we have been friends since first day at school. When we were little she had gray shiny hair that was cut short, so at first I thought she was a boy like me. Later I learned that she actually was a girl, when her hair grew out and was at her shoulder - I started seeing the girly marks in her face, but I didn’t stop playing with her, like the other boys. She is my best friend and now her hair is all the way down to her bottom. Diamond is the only one that knows my secret, and I’m not going to tell anyone else. She and I had sneaked away from training and relaxed at the Fewi, the most relaxed place we can find. It got its name from the birds that live here… Fewi is a silent bird, you can hardly hear it. It’s blue like the pond in the area, its eyes is green as the grass. Therefor the place got the name Fewi. Diamond and I are lying in the grass, relaxing. Every day we train, and train, and train. I’m getting a bit sick of it, but it seems that I’m the only one. “Yeah, like that would end well” I answered, and stared up in the sky. I like books, but dad told me to quit reading them. “They’ll bring you nowhere in life son! Training will!” he says. I’ll guess he’s right. But I like reading, another one of my secrets. The only class I have is human studies - a class that everyone is forced to take. I love it! The humans seem smart for Nomagi creatures! I could see a Fewi flying above me, high in the sky. Suddenly it ducked, I followed it with my eyes to the shiny blue pond where it got a fish and disappeared into the trees again. I love those, they’re so beautiful. “I’m serious, it would make your life so much easier-“ she started. “Di, drop the subject!” I plead. She shut up and started into the pond. I relaxed. Perhaps we should get back to training; I don’t want to get in to much trouble. It’s not like I haven’t been in trouble before, actually dad yells at me every day, it’s more that I don’t like it. “Maybe, we should get back” Diamond didn’t say a word, we just got up and started walking back to town. “So… Who are you following to the prom?” I asked smilingly. She laughed “You silly! You promised me, when we were so small!” her thumb and middle finger almost touched, I laughed at her, and started running towards the school. Diamond may be a girl, but she is the fastest in our class! She gave me a head start before starting herself and actually had a little trouble catching up. We reached the school, and sneaked into the outdoor class. The teacher started yelling at us when he saw us, but then mumbled that we didn’t need to train anyway, since we both are so trained. The school is big, but the inside it mostly for weapons and health-departments. When you get to the main entrance there’s a big sign that says “Le Serma yer, Le Serma fria, Le Vi Survi” Which is old katanask for “For the young, For the family, For our survival”. They’re of course referring to “SermaRiro”, which in our days is called “The red day”, when the Lighters decided our race was a treat to humanity, and marched into our country, killing every woman, man and child. Before reaching the big hill “Riro” it’s named today, they didn’t meet much resistance, but on that hill our forefathers killed and defended our land. The ‘war’ (If you even can call it that… I call it a slaughter) only lasted one day. When it was done, and all the corpses of that day were buried, the sun went down, and in the light of the sunset the hill appeared Red as blood. And it does that every year on that day. The elders believe it’s an effect of the mix of our kind’s blood: The magic of the lighters, and our persistent against getting hurt. I think it’s all the memories of the people who died. They don’t want to be forgotten, so every year they remind us. The lighters promised to leave us alone as long as we stay in our country, and we all take the ‘human course’ that they made. I have heard that they don’t even have one themselves… the name of the school is above the entrance. “Shakra” which means needed. After the war this school was build, not because we wanted to, but because it was needed therefor it got its name. When you walk in there’s a long hallway, with seven doors. Three of them leads to weapons, one to a library, two of them are health departments, and the last lead to another hallway, with seven more, with exact the same, the hallway that connect to that one is the last, and make the school into a horseshoe shape. A little bit further away there is a big building for big arrangements, like the prom. I’m in the second last Tymino, before going into the same business as my dad. He’s a highly thought of shopkeeper, selling anything from Fek to verino shoes. I already work there part time - and earning a little bit of money. I’ll like to go out into the human world and discover a bit; maybe even find some things my dad can sell. My mum is a runner - and the finest you can find east of Vedom. Mostly the runners are killed from catching the Devil bulls around here - but she somehow survives. The meat is so expensive, so dad makes good money on it. “There’s a calling in the main hall!” the teacher announced.

Now…

The memories felt distanced. How did I come from there, to here? I miss her sometimes… Diamond was a fantastic friend. “Sleepy head, we have to get back” she noticed. We got on the horses and got fast back. A lot of hours had past so it was time for some lunch. A familiar face greeted us when we came in. “How long did you wait?” Rachael asked, while looking down into the ground. “An half hour” he said. He still looked pretty pissed. Her dad seemed like it amused her, and we sat down. “What was it?” her dad asked her. “Some people, I cleaned it up” she mumbled. Adrian was sitting with an apple – judging from the state of his plate, it was the only thing he had touched. “So, while we eat, why don’t you tell us about the marking?” Her dad smiled to Adrian who just nodded, and we looked at Adrian. I noticed the dark colors under his eyes, and the marks on his arms. He has been fighting a lot hasn’t he? “For a start” Adrian began “When we go through the portal, some guards will meet us, and we’ll be taken to the castle” “Wrong” Rachael’s voice cut right through me, and stopped Adrian from talking. “What are you saying sweety?” Her dad asked. “When we get in” she started, and took a bite of a lamb chop “ We’ll be greeted by guards, and I’ll be taken to a prison cell” Then she smiled, like that didn’t bother her. Adrian chose to ignore her. “After that, your stuff will get searched through… and the next day the marking will begin” She nodded. “How… does a marking begin?” I asked, and took an apple. “Actually pretty simple” her dad responded smilingly. “It all starts off with the king sitting down, and then she’ll be taking in to the meeting, and placed in the Jem” “Jem?” “To seconds” Adrian took a napkin and started drawing on it. When he was done he gave it to Rachael and she placed it between us.

“The x’s is guards” he noticed “The triangles are your… you know… defender” “And the Milo de mai?” I asked. “The nobles” Her dad took a look and just nodded. I bit my lip. Really, I don’t want her to go… Besides that… where did Jeremy go? He’s always around! Why did he suddenly leave this morning? Yesterday…

“Can you watch out for Rachael tomorrow?” he had caught me in a corner, on the way to find some food. Rachael had trained during lunch, so all the food was back in the kitchen. “Sure – but why can’t y-“ I started. “Rachael asked me a favor” he said “And I might as well do it. It will take some time, so I can’t reach home before night”. I took a deep breath, and tried not to get lost in his eyes again. “But – what are yo-“ he leaned forward and removed all the questions in my mind. “It’s better if you don’t know”. Then he walked away, leaving me speechless and breathless. Why does he keep doing that?

Now…

Jeremy and I barely talk together about this. I don’t know if he’s afraid of her reaction too. I looked at Rachael, who was still getting explained about the process. I bit my lip for a while. I should tell Jeremy about the marks on her body too. He doesn’t see them, so he doesn’t know about them. It can’t be healthy, and I have no idea about where they are coming from. Is it me? Do I change during the night and hit her? There was a case about such an incident in my world. In the end, he woke up and discovered he had killed his wife during the night. I took a sip of my water, before taking a deep breath. They kept on talking, and didn’t realize I was not paying attention. I took another bit of an apple, and tried seeing the marks on her body. She had covered them up good. And she wipes of the blood! So she knows it is there, but shouldn’t it heal completely? I have seen her train! A wound by a weapon is easy to heal for her! Why doesn’t she just heal it then? It must hurt a lot… I have to tell him. When Adrian was done giving her instructions, her dad proposed an idea about him eating for dinner. He accepted, and said then he could watch her train. She didn’t say anything, but I could see that she didn’t like the idea. The vampires came, and she started training with them. I could see how Adrian had a hard time not trying to step in and help her, and in the same time I could see the vampires that usually never blinked when she hit towards there head – started to be a little more restless, while watching Adrian slowly. “How is school?” I asked Adrian. “Regretting already?” he asked. I smiled to him. “No, just curios”. “It’s fine” He didn’t want to talk to me, he kept following her with his eyes, and checking on the vampires. When one of them gave her a hit that made her bleed, I could see he was about to get up. But they just kept fighting, like nothing had happened. “Lucem” she said when they were done “Can I talk to you for a minute?” and after that she changed the language and I couldn’t understand a thing. Adrian seemed to be bothered by that, more than me. They left, and dinner started.
