"What is it?" I asked niall, referring to the box. " You’ll see. C'mon." he said grabbing my hand and pulling me outside. When we got out the door I asked why we were out here. "Just cause, I didn't want to be in there. Plus, it seems right." he said smirking. I looked around at the big dark and light green trees hanging above us. "Why would it seem right to be out here? What makes it any different to what’s in the box?" I asked, still looking at our surroundings. Something doesn't seem right. Its windier than usual here, normally we don't get very much wind.
I looked up at the grey clouds above us, completely ignoring whatever niall was ranting about, and I felt everything inside of me crash and at that same second, memories of when I was 6 years old flashed before me.
“ Daddy what going on?” I asked as my dad carried me through the house. “ Its ok, everything is ok.” He promised, out of breath. “Where’s mommy? And scruffy?” scruffy was MY dog. We found him abandoned on the side of a freeway. He’s a black border terrier with some brown patches. That dog was is my life, nobody understands why though. If anything happens to that dog I don’t know how I could live with myself. “ mom said she was going to grab him. She is in the secret house. Remember when I said that there was a secret house underneath our home?” I nodded. “well that’s where were going, we’re going to play a little game, ok? We’re gonna be spies, and we have to hide so the bad guys don’t find us. We have to hurry though.” “ ok daddy.”
He continued to run through the house, and while going down the stairs I caught a glimpse out the window and saw nothing but dust and wind blowing everything, sticks and branches and other things flying through the sky. We ran to the basement and I figured that’s where we were hiding, but he kept running until we came to a door with a lock on it. Dad tore a piece of the wallpaper off and pulled a key out. He quickly unlocked the door and ran inside, closing it again and locking it. I dug my face in his shirt and stayed like that until he sat down with me on his lap. “we’re safe now, bud.” I looked up and nodded. “where’s mommy? And scruffy? Where are we?” I asked, looking around, seeing that we were in a room that looked a lot like a house, with other doors leading to other places. It looked just like a normal home, there was a couch, tv, fuzzy carpet, movies, a pile of blankets, it just looked like a home. I wonder what the other rooms look like… “mom is down here somewhere. And scruffy should be too.” “then why was there a lock on the door if mommy came down here?” I asked, pouting in confusion. “because there are 2 different doors that go down here.” I nodded and layed back down in his chest. “Why do we have to be down here?” “I told you, we’re spies-“ “ No, the real reason. We’re not spies daddy. What’s going on up there, in the sky?” I asked. “its just a storm, a really destructive storm. Now, we could sit here and you could take a nap and by the time you wake up, it will all be over, or we could go get mom and explore the underground house that we are sitting in.”
We decided to explore, then sleep. After we found my mom, I saw that her eyes were red and puffy and wet. “whats wrong mommy?” I asked. “im so sorry baby girl, I tried to find him, I really did, but it was too late. Im sorry jade.” What? Who? The only thing she was supposed to get was- scruffy! “ SCRUFFY!” I screamed over and over again. “mom where is he?!” I screamed, running around looking for him. “im sorry.” Was all she said.
That night I cried my self to sleep. Dad tried to get me to be with them, that’s it not safe to be in a room by myself during a tornado, but I didn’t want to see her. That dog was my life, what am I supposed to do now? And I just wanted to be by myself.
After the storm was over, the top part of our house was torn apart, so dad called over some people to help him rebuild it. Later that year we started the farm and got animals. Mom even tried to talk me into getting another dog. Of course I wasn’t going to agree to it because I feel that when you do that, your kind of replacing the other animal. I just don’t like the sound of that.
And I’ve been that way ever since, haven’t even thought about getting another dog. Or ever living in the country. Where I lived with my mom, we didn’t get tornados, so I felt safer. But I haven’t faced one since then. And I never planned on it.
“Jade? Can you here me? What going on up there that’s so impor-“ “the clouds.” I cut him off, nearly whispering. “the clouds? Really?” I looked up again, seeing the same sky I saw back then, all dark and windy. “Niall, we have to go. Now.” I said, my hands now shaking, I grabed his hand and started pulling him to the house. “what why? Its nice out here. Cant we just enjoy it?” he asked, pulling away from me and standing there. “it wont be for long. We have to get inside now!” I yelled. “calm down jade, its just a little wind.” He smiled. “Niall get the fuck over here now. We have to go!” he put his hands up in defeat and walked over to me slowly. I grabbed his arm and pulled him to the house. He kept telling me to slow down, but I would just run faster. I wasn’t going to stop until we got to the stables and got the horses and got down to the basement. We got in the stable and I quickly ran to midnight and storm. “Niall you have to help me get the horses out and in the basement.” “jade, what’s wrong, why are you crying?” he came closer to me and grabbed my hand, stopping me. I hadn’t even realized I was crying until he mentioned it. “The tornado-“ “tornado? What tornado, there wasn’t one-“ “look,” I said, pointing out the small window. “we have to get the horses and get to the basement. Please.” I looked up at him and he nodded. After a few minutes of fumbling with the rope, niall came and helped me, and we ran back to the house. we went inside and got the horses down to the basement. “holy shit its coming.” “no shit, c’mon,” I dragged midnight and niall, who was pulling storm, to the back of the basement. “why are we going back her-“ “Shh.” I yelled, trying to remember how to get inside the door. I quickly ripped off the wallpaper and dug inside the small hole in the wall until I pulled out the key. “ what are you do-“ “shut the fuck up niall.” I unlocked the door and threw it open, pulling the horses and niall in with me. When we were in I turned and locked the door. I turned back around and just felt like crying a river thinking about what happened the last time I was in here. And again my dad was involved, which made it worse. I could already feel my eyes water.
I hid my emotions as best as I could and shakily tied the horses up in a room we made for them just incase this ever happened. There was food and water and other things for them. I sat in there for a minute, crying silently to myself and just petting midnight, when I heard the door open. “jade?” niall asked. “what do you want?” I said, not facing him. “ you ok?” ‘obviously not, last time this happened I lost everything,’ I thought. “Im fine.” I whispered, not even a whisper, it was barely audible, that’s why I was surprised when he answered. “you sure?” “leave me alone.” I said louder, but not yelling. ” with weather like this? Hell no. there’s no way im gonna be in a separate room with the chances of something happening to you.” He said, more demanding. I just stood there, petting midnight. “im serious niall, leave me alone.”
Im doing it again, pushing people away at a time like this, a time I need them the most. Im wanting to be alone, away from everyone. This happens a lot actually, now that I think about it, I shut a lot of people out. Well everyone except for my dad. I guess it’s a habit. And im doing it again.
He sighed and I heard a door close. And this is what I get in return, silence, loneliness, but in a good way. A peaceful way, and im fine with it. Alone. Alone with my self and the 2 horses accompanying me in his room. And just as I was going through all the positive things about being alone inside my head, I felt two arms wrap around me from behind and a voice whisper in my ear, ”im never gonna leave you alone, Jade”
