I sigh as my phone lights up beside my bed, making its usual beeping sound. I sit up and stretch my arms, yawning as I do so. I pick up the iPhone and turn off the alarm as a text comes through:
From: SOPHIEEEE: Heya Katie, you excited for today? Lol, stupid question...
I laugh and roll my eyes.
To: SOPHIEEEE: DUH! I wanna know what the prize is!
From: SOPHIEEEE: You gotta know how to enter first!! Aha, don't get your hopes up Katie, it's like, a 1 in 600 chance.
To: SOPHIEEEE: Pfftt, says the one who has a family pass to Thailand. Lucky you. I told you your mad dancing skills would come in handy. You so owned everybody in year 8. They didn't stand a chance. Anyway, meet @ my locker when u get 2 skool.
From: SOPHIEEEE: K
I put my phone into my side bag beside my bed, then flip my covers off and yawn my way to the bathroom. As I strip off I hear my phone vibrate again. I frown and grab it out of the bag.
From: SOPHIEEEE: DONT FORGET MY COFFEE
I laugh again, then hop into the shower. I sigh in pleasure as the hot water runs down my arms and legs. After washing myself with the lavender scented soap, I reluctantly step out of the shower and reach for the fluffy white towel.
"I'm going now dad, see you later! I'll be home at like...8:30 cause I'm going to Sophie's after!"
I yell from the door.
"Ok, have a nice day"
I open the door and head to the corner cafe, my mind totally focused on what the prize could possibly be. I don't really care what I have to do, as long as the prize is worth it.
I smile at the lady at the counter, order the coffees and wait patiently at the side. I check my watch as she sits the coffees up on the table. 8:23am. I pay for the coffees and head towards school, my bag swinging by my side. School isn't that far from home, it's only about a 12 minute walk.
As I walk in the gate, I see jake and his 'gang' gathered up near the flag pole, whispering. I sigh mentally. Honestly, you'd think now that they're nearly 18 that they would grow up, but no. They refuse to give up their childish pranks. At first they were funny, but the only reaction they get now from their victims are rolled eyes and comments like "grow up guys" or "you guys are so immature", yet the gang still seem to find it hilarious.
"Watcha doing kateh?"
I continue walking towards the locker-hallway door as I reply with
"Walking into school, what the hell does it look like?"
I hear sniggering behind me, but I can tell its jake's friends laughing at him for asking such a stupid question.
"Ummm...Katie I was wondering if..you know..like..I meant what are you doing after school.."
I spin around and give him a sarcastic smile.
"Jake, I've told you a thousand times. I'm never going to go out with you. How many times do I need to repeat myself? I am NOT going on a date with you. I am not going to go with you to some fancy restaurant. Grow up, jake. Your nearly an adult"
And with that, I turn around and head towards my locker, ignoring the things being said to jake such as "Rejection much!" And "does somebody know first aid cause jake just got BURNED".
As I open my locker I hear footsteps come from behind me. I laugh as two soft hands cover my eyes.
"Guess who it is?"
I remove the hands and smile.
Tom and I are great friends, but still not as close as Sophie and I. Sophie had a massive crush on Tom until he recently confessed to us that he is gay. Nothing has changed between us, if anything it has made us closer. He's great to have around, knowing that he won't spill our secrets or make things complicated by falling for us.
"Did you get a coffee for me?"
"Gah! No, sorry. You should have texted"
"It's fine, you know I hate the stuff anyway"
I glance over tom's shoulder to see Sophie running over to us.
"Gimme gimme gimme gimme!"
I hear her say as she gets closer. I grin as she slows to a stop,, handing her her extra strong black coffee.
I watch as she gulps it down quickly, a drop escaping her mouth and ending up sliding down her neck. I giggle as Tom wipes it up with a handkerchief.
"I needed that, thanks Kat. Oh by the way you look nice today"
She says looking me up and down. Tom nods in agreement
"Yeah I noticed that but I didn't say anything in case you took it the wrong way"
I roll my eyes.
I had put on the denim shorts, blue dress shirt and black vans this morning in a rush. Maybe for once I made the right fashion choice, pity it was by accident. I grab a hair tie from my side bag and pull my brown curls into a ponytail. I've always loved my hair; but my hair only. I hate having it down though, I just couldn't be bothered tying it this morning. That and because I forgot.
"Ok, you guys ready to go to the theatre room? They are announcing the prize and how to win it there"
I say, shoving my side bag into the locker and grabbing the necessary books for after the announcement. The others nod.
"Let's get this over with; the tension is killing me"
I grip my books slightly as we walk towards the theatre, an attempt to prepare myself for the worst.
