I put my books on the floor and sit down in my seat. Tom and Sophie do the same. I grip their hands on either side of me.
"Let's hope it's not like when we were in year 4"
I hold in my giggles as tom sniggers at his comment. Year four was the worst ever competition: it was a fashion show (the best outfit was the winner) but the theme was pollution. All the dumb pretty girls didn't have a clue on what to do, it was hilarious. I ended up making a dress out of different coloured plastic shopping bags, causing me to come second. I was so furious. The prize was not really worth it anyway; 2 memberships for the famous Melbourne gym. The reason i was mad was because Anna Kiwish; my sworn enemy (even though she moved to America because apparently her 'rich daddy could do anything she wanted') had won with a plastic shirt and aluminium skirt. For staters, it was ugly, and the only reason she one is because her dad payed the school. It was obvious because she bragged about it for ages. Why didn't he just fucking pay for the membership? It would have been cheaper.
"Kat..Kat!?..earth to Katie??"
I shake my head, getting rid of the daydream.
"It's starting, you should listen"
I nod back at her and focus my attention to the stage as Mr.Lamb (head of school) walked up to the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 45th annual Competition Games!!"
I giggle and whisper to Sophie
"I wonder why this reminds me of the hunger games"
She holds her hand to her mouth to stop her from laughing.
"Ok, as usual, the entry fee for the competition is 30 dollars. If you wish to enter, please hand in your money to your home room teachers with your name marked on the front. The only difference this year is that you won't need any parent signatures, because the way you are entering is going to be different, but we will get to that soon.
I frown as he clears his throat. Isn't it different every year?...except they all usually needed signatures...
"Ok, so majority of the money will be given to charity, while the rest will be spent on the prize..which is going to be.."
A drumroll plays in my head.
"Going to be categorised into two choices. Choice one, mainly for the boys, is a $300 dollar gift voucher to the store of your choice"
I hear a roar of excitement, although I listen impatiently for him to continue. $300 is great I guess, but only because like none of the guys have jobs.
"And mainly for the girls.."
An actual drum roll plays.
"2 backstage passes to.."
My eyes widen as I glance at Sophie.
"A one direction concert!"
I hear a massive roar of screams fill the theatre, as well as Sophie's and mine. Sophie dragged me into the one direction fandom with no mercy, and I have loved them ever since. I wouldn't cry in front of them for them or for a video (although Sophie probably would) but I'm a pretty massive fan.
"SILENCE! There will still be only one winner, it's just that I considered the fact that many boys wouldn't really enjoy a one direction concert. Now, to enter, as I was saying, mark your full name on a zip lock back with the thirty dollars and hand it in to your teacher. YOU MAY ONLY ENTER ONCE!They will then end them in to me. I will write every name down on a piece of paper, put them in a bowl, and pick one out randomly same time next week.I also figured that it wouldn't be fair if I chose somebody using some sort of other competition, since there's one direction backstage passes at stake. Ok everybody, please head towards your home room hour"
I glance over my shoulder while picking up my books. I sigh and slap Lucy's face playfully.
"Did you sleep through the whole thing?"
"What did I miss?"
"Ok the prizes are backstage passes to a 1D concert or a $300 dollar voucher. Only one winner, blah blah blah, $30 dollars for a entry, has to be in a zip lock bag named, they will pick out of a bowl on the day"
She nods again.
A grin spreads across my face as I look at Sophie.
"I so want this prize!!"
I nod in agreement as Tom waves at us, gesturing that he has class and that he wants nothing to do with our fangirling.
"Haha you'd be lucky to win twice in a row! Anyway, can you promise me that if you do win, I get the other pass?"
"As long as you promise the same"
"I definitely promise"
And with that, we link arms and head towards our home room. We have been in the same home room since we got home room teachers in high school. Tom has been with us once, but we still get a lot of our classes together. Sophie and I have the same language classes, but apart from that, it's just home room together. I lean over and whisper in Sophie's ear.
"It's going to be a long seven days. I think I will die of waiting before next monday"
"I'll die before you do"
"Are you suggesting a bet?"
She laughs slightly as mrs.tom enters the room (our home room techer)
I am right though.
This is going to be one damn long week.
