My Brothers Best-Friend ∞ l.h. [ON HOLD]

"Luke, you're a nice guy but nothing can happen between us. Calum's your best friend and he's also my brother. It would just make things awkward for everyone."

Maybe Emily Hood was jumping to conclusions without even knowing what Luke was getting at, but she could tell he liked her. She might even like him too.

"So you like me?" Luke said with a smirk. She rolled my eyes and shook her head.

"That's not what I said."

2. chapter 2

Luke's POV

Calum, Ashton, Michael, Emily and I were all in English. Emily excused herself and left the room. Finally, at least now I could breath. I turned to Calum and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Why didn't you tell you had a sister?" I asked. He shrugged his shoulders.

"It's complicated. I'll tell you later." I nodded my head and left him alone. I wonder what was complicated about Calum having a sister and not telling me. I'm his best friend.

I crossed my arms over my chest and tried paying attention to the lesson but I couldn't. I was suddenly thinking about Emily. She was really pretty and I just wanted to run my fingers through her hair.

The door opened and Emily walked through. I got a good look at her and noticed she was wearing a Ramones shirt. It looked oddly familiar.

She took her seat in front of me sitting beside Ashton.

"Okay class, I'm going to partner you up for an activity. The two of you will have to search the school for a couple items."

Ms. Parker started calling off names and I patiently waited for mine.

"Calum and Danielle, Ashton and Michael and Emily and Luke."

Calum turned to me with a smirk on his face. He got up and walked over to his partner. Emily turned around and smiled at me.

"I guess we're partners." I grinned back.

I got our list from Ms. Parker and started walking around the school.

"By the way, I like your shirt." I told her. She looked down at it and blushed.

"Thanks, it was a present from Calum."

Then it clicked.

"Hey, I need to get a Christmas present for someone." Calum told me as we walked around the mall.

"Who?" I asked curiously.

"Just a girl. What do you think I should get her?" He asked.

"Calum getting a girl a present? She must be special." I teased.

Calum glared at me seriously. "She is, but not in the way you're thinking about Luke."

I nodded my head. "Alright, what's she like?" I questioned thoughtfully.

"She's kinda like me. We like the same things." He explained scratching his head.

"While if I was getting you a present, I'd get you a Ramones shirt. I know you'd like that."

Calum smiled wide. "Luke you're a genius."

"Luke?" Emily's soft voice broke my train of thought.

"Sorry, just thinking about things." Emily playfully rolled her eyes.

"Calum has told me so much about you. You guys are really similar." She told me.

"Oh really? How?"

We stopped in the hall and leaned against the lockers.

"Well, both of you are into your band which is great. Both have a sense of humour. And you’re both pretty cute."

I smirked. "You think I'm cute?" I asked.

"I said both of you are cute and that's a pretty nice thing for me to say about Calum. That's why I think you're alike."

I shrugged my shoulder with a chuckle. "Well I'm still taking that complement for myself."

Emily laughed. "So, what exactly are we looking for?"

I looked down at the sheet of paper in my hand.

"Well it says here that we need to find 3 items that reminds you of your childhood." I explained. I looked up at her to see a sad look over Emily's face.

"Is something wrong Emily?" I asked.

"Nah, I'm alright." She shrugged me off and continued down the hall.

"We should start looking." She told me.

We walked down a few hallways and found a couple of things.

"I think that should be good. I wonder what these things are for." I spoke.

"Ya me too." I stared at Emily. There was something about her. She did look exactly like Calum which freaked me out but she also didn't look like him, if that makes any sense.

She was really small, unlike Calum. Her hair reached down to her back in waves that looked great on her.

"We should held back to class." I told her. We walked back in silence. It wasn't awkward, it was just nice.

"Alright class, tell your partner in detail why you picked each item then your partner will tell the class what you told them." Ms. Parker explained.

I turned back to Emily to see her staring down at her items. I reached forward and placed my hand on hers.

"I can go first." I spoke softly. She looked between my eyes and my hand which made me pull back.

I scratched my neck and started explaining my items to Emily.

"Got it?" I asked her nervously.

She nodded her head and then told me about her 3 items.

"Okay, who's up first?"

We patiently waited for our turn. Ashton and Michael went up and all I did was laugh throughout the presentation. It wasn't anything to do with their lives.

"Settle down everyone. How about Emily and Luke go next."

I looked over to Emily to see a worried look over her face.

"You'll do fine. Come on."

Emily took a deep breath and showed the first item.

"This is a guitar pick Luke found in the music room. As Luke was growing up he found one in his parents’ room and decided to keep it. After a while of begging Luke finally got his first acoustic guitar for Christmas and has been using the same pick since. This is a picture we found in a yearbook from 2011 of Luke's best friend." Emily held up the year book and showed the class a blown up, slightly blurry, fluffy haired Calum. She looked at the picture and smiled.

"Luke and Calum have been friends since elementary school and probably will forever." I looked towards Calum to see his face was all red. I grinned.

"Lastly, this is a soccer ball, or should I say a football," Emily laughed. "Luke hated them growing up since he wasn't into sports and more into music."

The class clapped for Emily and so did I.

I took the middle and started talking about Emily's items.

"Emily picked this book because when she was younger her brother would read it to her so she could fall asleep." I looked over to Emily and she smiled weakly. I continued.

"The second item she picked was this chemistry test tube. She's really into chem and maybe wants to go into it after high school."

"Alright, the last item Emily picked was this," I held up a pair of ballet slippers. "While she lived in New York, Emily attended a dance school. She was really good at it too. She even got into NYC's dance school but she declined the offer."

I looked back at Emily. She had tears filling her eyes and I honestly didn't know what to do. I wanted to hug her but was that stepping over my boundaries since I just met her?

I turned to Calum to see his mouth wide open. I guess he was clueless about this.

"Okay, thank you both. That was lovely."

We sat back in our chairs and Emily didn't speak a word.

I hope she's alright.

Calum's POV

Dance school? Why didn't she ever tell me about this? I would've never told her to come back home if that was her dream. I feel so horrible right now. Emily won't even look at me.

The bell rang and I watched as my sister gather her belongings and hurry out of the room. I didn't even grab my stuff so I could catch up to her.

"Emily wait!" I shouted after her.

I was out of breath by the time I reached her. I wrapped my arms around her waist and spun her around.

"Emily, please tell me what's going on. What dance school? Why didn't you tell me earlier?" I breathed deeply as I stared into her brown eyes. They filled with more tears but she quickly wiped them away.

"Can we talk about this later Calum? I don't want to talk about it." She dropped her head and started to walk past me but I grabbed her wrist.

"Do you remember what I promised you? I said I'd never let you go. And right now I'm showing you exactly that." I stood my ground and stared at her with my arms crossed over my chest.

"Fine, let’s find somewhere quiet to talk."

Emily's POV

I let out a sigh as Calum and I took a seat in an empty class room.

"Alright, what do you want to know?" I asked as I dropped my bag on the desk.

"Everything. I want you to start from the beginning. When you started dancing, when it became serious, when you found out about the school, when you lied to me."

I stared at Calum in shock. I didn't think I hurt him this much from hiding this.

"Calum, I never meant to lie, it’s just that-"

"Its just that what?" He interrupted. "Why did you get the need to feel like you had to hide this from me? I thought that growing up I made it clear that I'd always be there for you. Why didn't you tell me?"

I watched as his hands formed fists and his knuckles turned white. He was getting mad and I haven't seen a mad Calum before.

"Will you just let me just speak Calum? I didn't want to hide this from you ever! It was never serious, well not as serious as your band. I just did it for fun and someone from the school thought I was good. Good enough to attend their school without an audition or knowing anything about me. A free scholarship. But I didn't take the offer, you know why? It was the same time you asked me to come home. How could I ever choose a school over you Calum? I couldn't do that to you after how excited you were. I just couldn't."

I ran my fingers through my hair and wiped away the tears that somehow escaped my eyes. I didn't want to cry anymore. Especially in front of Calum.

"Emily," His voice cracked. I shook my head."Calum I don't want you to be upset or feel guilty about this." I stood up and pulled him into my arms.

"I'd choose you over that school in a heartbeat if they asked me again. I don't care. I've missed too much of your life and that's never happening again."

"Calum Thomas Hood, no buts." I grinned

"I hate you." He mumbled hoarsely.

"I love you too."
