16. Preparing to Fight

Hogwarts was preparing for battle. Kingsley, Lupin and Tonks directed fighters to various posts while Professor McGonagall and the other Heads of Houses waved their wands causing the castle to defend itself. The suits of armor that lined the castle halls jumped to life and started to march towards the front courtyard. Professor Sprout had enlisted Neville’s help and brought out her most ferocious plants from the greenhouses. Devil’s snare, Venomous Tentacula and Mandrakes were strewn in the grounds for the Death Eaters to find. Holly saw Hagrid and his half-brother Gwap lead the way to defend to courtyard.

Holly tore off her robes and helped McGonagall, Flitwick, Slughorn and Mr. and Mrs. Weasley cast a complex protective shield around the castle.

“Ah thank you Ms. Potter.” McGonagall said when it was complete. The elder witch looked at Holly with a kind smile, “Oh my dear you look breathtaking, just as you did on your first days here. Even wearing the same clothes too!” Holly looked down and saw that she was wearing the same clothing. It was the outfit she wore on her second day at Hogwarts. She remembered it clearly because she had dressed to withstand the whispers and looks of suspicion that she knew would follow her. Her royal blue t-shirt was covered by her leather jacket. The jeans she wore now had holes in them from her travels and her knee high black boots had seen better days. Still, she felt confident and ready for battle. As McGonagall ran off to talk to Neville and Seamus about ‘blowing up’ the bridge or something along those lines, Holly hurried over to the battlements.

On her way up, she ran into Ron Weasley. She literally ran into his back and fell backwards. As she caught herself she suddenly remembered an important missing link.

“Oh hey Holly, you haven’t seen Harry or Hermione have you?” Ron asked Holly.

“Erm I saw Hermione with Ginny head to the second floor and no idea where Harry is, probably under the cloak.” Ron nodded at her answer and started to turn away. Holy quickly grabbed his arm and swung him back to her.

“Ron! We still don’t have anything to destroy them with!” Ron’s face went slack at her words. Holy kept talking, “Did Dumbledore always destroy them with the sword? Or did he use anything else?” Ron started to shrug his shoulder then he muttered something like ‘the bathroom’ and ran away.

“Alright then?” Holly asked the air. She hurried up to the top floors of the castle. As she walked past the enormous clock that hung from one of the battlements, she spied a pair of red-haired twins. Sitting between them was Gryphon. He barked and hurried over to her when he sensed her. It seemed as though he had lost her in the crowd and had just stuck with the twins. All of them were watching the lights show. The Death Eaters were trying to penetrate the protective shield Holly and the other teachers had cast on the school. The Death Eater’s spells were blowing up on the shield which created a terrifyingly beautiful firework display.

“Alright there Holly?” Fred asked her as she joined them. Both the twins looked grim but determined. Holly looked out over the castle grounds and saw various groups of students, staff and others get ready for battle. Aberforth had spread the word and many other witches and wizards had answered his call. The train driver, barman of the Leaky Cauldron, Neville’s grandmother and others had joined the cause. Holly saw a group of black figures huddled on a far hill. She knew instantly this was Voldemort’s army. Holly watched as another group of figures, looking remarkably like Snatchers move towards the bridge connecting the forbidden forest, Hagrid’s hut, the Owlery, and the Quidditch pitch to the school. George silently pointed to the Quidditch pitch and Holly saw that the Death Eaters had set it on fire. The rage that had been building up in Holly since she had came to the school was almost at boiling point.

“How dare they” She whispered.

“Holly?” A voice made Holly turn around. It was Dean Thomas.

“Professor Flitwick was wondering if you could come help him with some other defenses.”

“Coming Dean, thank you.” Holly replied. She looked at the twins, “Be safe ok?”

“Oh c’mon Hol, when are we ever?” George replied.

“Define ‘safe’” Fred added with a smirk on his face.

“I mean it” Holly said seriously but a smile played on her lips, “Want to keep Gryphon company while I’m gone?” The twins nodded and she pat the Boxador lovingly, “I’ll be back soon don’t you worry”

Holly hurried after Dean and found Flitwick creating large stone soldiers that he could lead as the first pawns in the battle. Holly quickly helped him and soon enough they had created a small army. As Flitwick sent them to the courtyard to join the suits of armor, Holly heard the clock strike twelve; the battle had begun.
