I woke up, feeling pain in my arm. I groaned.
I heard Grover’s voice.
“Devon! You’re awake! It’s our entire fault. If Percy, Annabeth, and I cleared the path into Camp Half-Blood, you would have been perfectly healthy.”
I shook my head.
“You guys did your best. There were just too many monsters. I’m alright… But I’m surprised you aren’t dead! Where are Percy and Annabeth?”
Grover answered, “They’re training together. Battling… And they’re perfectly fine. In fact, Percy doesn’t have a single bruise.”
I asked, “How can that be possible? He was full of cuts and bruises when I last saw him battling with the monsters. How long has it been?”
“Not that long. Five hours…”
I sat up and asked, “How can that be possible? And what about Annabeth?”
Grover answered, “Annabeth was never hurt that much in the first place. Percy was hurt badly. But the water healed him. He’s the son of Poseidon.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“So that’s the secret? Percy’s a demigod?”
Grover shook his head.
“In Camp Half-Blood, we all are demigods. Percy’s the son of Poseidon, Annabeth’s the daughter of Athena, and I’m a satyr. We don’t know who your godly parent is yet.”
I said, “It has to be a man. I lived with my mom. My crazy mom.”
Grover told me, “She can be your aunt or something. You never know.”
Suddenly, I saw Percy and Annabeth come in. They both looked pretty wounded. I was jealous when I saw Percy and Annabeth together. I knew that they weren’t romantically linked, but I still wanted to be the one with Annabeth.
Percy said to me, “Devon, Chiron wants to see you. It seems like an emergency.”
Percy and I walked towards the Big House. I looked around Camp. Everyone was training and fighting.
I asked, “Did you fight with Annabeth?”
“You can’t exactly call it fighting, Dev. We were training. For battling. Annabeth’s a pretty tough opponent though. She’s real good.”
I said, “Oh. How is it like being the son of Poseidon? He’s one of the main gods, isn’t he?”
“One of the big three. But to be honest, Devon, it’s pretty lonely. Everyone else has half-brothers and sisters. Everyone except me. There was a prophecy a long time ago that the next child of the big three, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, that turns sixteen would make a choice of destroying or saving Olympus… So the big three made an oath to not have any more children with mortals again. But I was born. So I don’t have any half-brothers or sisters.”
I asked, “Is it cool being Poseidon’s son though? Do you have the power to control water and all of that?”
Percy just nodded. We remained silent for a while. After a couple of minutes, Percy stopped. I looked up. We were standing in front of a big house.
We walked in to see a centaur (half-man, half-horse), waiting for us.
I was scared at first. I wasn’t used to seeing centaurs.
Percy told me, “I’ll leave you with Chiron. See ya, Devon.”
Then Percy left the room. So I was left alone with the centaur.
I asked nervously, "So what was it that you wanted to tell me?”
Chiron walked around the room, sighing.
He said, “Poseidon wants to see you.”
I asked, “Poseidon? Why me? Why not Percy or anything? I’m just a boy who appears to be a demigod.”
Chiron shook his head.
“There’s something special about you, Devon. Poseidon is in the next room, waiting for you.”
I walked into the next room to find a normal man sitting there. Maybe that was how he looked like in the mortal world.
He stood up and greeted me.
“Hello, son…. I have some important information to give you. And I am going to give you a quest.”
I told him, “Um, Lord Poseidon, I’m not the kind of kid you will need. I’m a total loser. I have dyslexia, ADHD, and I don’t have many friends. I got kicked out of schools many times. And I’m totally new here…Also, why did you call me son?”
“Devon, that’s how all demigods are in the mortal world. In danger, getting kicked out of many schools, always getting in trouble, having dyslexia and ADHD. And I am definite that you’re the one that can help me. And I called you son because you are my son. You’re the son of Poseidon, Devon.”
I stared at my dad. So that’s who he was. That was why my mom could never tell me who my father was. It was a god. Poseidon…
I asked, “So what’s my quest? And what’s the information you wanted to give me?”
Poseidon said, “You are Luke Castellan’s brother.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Who’s Luke Castellan?”
Dad told me, “Percy will know… And your quest is to help Percy.”
I asked, “How, Dad? How?”
He answered, “You’ll know… To help you, I shall give you three gifts.”
He gave me a pen.
I looked at the pen.
“Um, thanks… Is it a mythical pen? Does it write by itself?”
Poseidon looked hurt.
“You wound me. You really do. This pen is a sword. And it will always return to your pocket.”
I pressed on something and the pen turned into a sword. It looked so cool.
I whispered, “It’s just like Percy’s… Thanks, Dad.”
Then, Poseidon gave me a mirror.
He told me, “You can communicate me any time with this mirror. But you can never tell Percy that I gave you this. Or Annabeth. Or Grover! No one but you shall know about this mirror.”
Then, Dad took out a patch of seeds.
“Each one of these seeds produces one small bomb. You’ll find them useful. Don’t tell Percy I gave you these seeds. Tell him that a daughter of Hephaestus gave you these seeds.”
I held those precious gifts in my hands.
“Thanks, Dad. You’re the best dad ever. So will I be able to see you again?”
He said, “Maybe… Perhaps not. Bye, Devon. Do well.”
Dad disappeared. I stared at the spot he had been standing in.
