The Far Side

You always hear about teenage girls and their perfect men, falling madly in love and living happily ever after. But what of us teenage boys? Do we not get a lovely romance tale? Well, I did. Some places I wouldn't call it lovely, and in others I would call it pure bliss. And trust me, if you think you women have it rough and find it hard to find the love of your life, then wait till you hear my story. For guys, it's a lot different!

8. In Her Time of Need

The next day and I was feeling much better. So much better. The poison was purged out of my body, and I was my normal self. I showed no signs of the night before and everything was under control in my head. Clear and peaceful like a summer morning over the golden rolling fields. I was ready to face Jess again at the library, but once again, she was late. But not as late as before. 1:15 it was when she came through those doors. I could feel that demon trying to ram it's way out of the cage again at the sight of her, but I had a guard at the door. That demon was going no where anytime soon.

"Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Jess is in our presence!" I declared. As normal, she giggled and pulled up her seat.

"Hello Tana." she replied, slumping down in her chair, whacking out her pencils and sketch book. She seemed a bit... off. I couldn't tell what it was, but she wasn't as cheery as normal. She placed her pencil case in a slight angle when, knowing her, was not a good sigh of happiness. And she always had her pencil case straight and parallel with her book.

"Your pencil case is off slightly... Is everything alright?" she glanced down at her pencil case, rolled her eyes and let out a massive huff.

"Damn it, you know me too well..." she whispered. I knew something was wrong, I just knew it!

"So, what is wrong? You know you can tell me. I always keep my secrets." It's true. All promises I make and all secrets I get told, I keep them. I make a solemn vow every time I get told a secret or make a promise, that I will never tell a living soul about what has been said. Not even a whisker or tale.

"Hmmm..." she hesitated. She then quickly moved her head closer to mine from across the table, one hand to the side of her mouth. "I encountered a problem with... Duncan yesterday afternoon after I left the library with him." There you go, a slither of hope; you had nothing to worry about. Shhh! Keep listening!

"Oh. Go on." I muttered back with a hungry ear.

"We were kissing behind the science block, and then it progressed into a full on make out, and then...." she hesitated again.

"Then what? You've got me on a ledge now."

"He moved his hand down my waist... seductively. I mean, we've been going out for a day! I'm not ready for that yet in the slightest!" I saw her problem, and I could totally sabotage their relationship right now, but that wasn't Tana. I sat back, hand on my chin and pondered on the situation.

"You are right, it is waaaay too early in the relationship for that. Well, it may of been an accident. You never know. Are you going behind the science block again later?"

"Yeah, but I'm scared! What if he goes further down?!"

"Don't be. I'm sure it was an accident last time." I felt that surge or righteousness again through my body, I again did the right thing... at the time.

1:45 and Duncan comes through the door of the library. He was a tall fella, black hair and one ear piercing on the left. His hair was short, stuck up at the front like a quiff. He came right up behind Jess and wrapped his hands round her. He buried his head in her neck and whispered a greeting to her. She whispered back, and they pecked in final stage of greeting.

"Duncan, this is Tana. He's my bestest friend I told you about." she stated, flaunting her hand towards me. He looked up at me in bewilderment. He didn't look pleased but he still greeted me, slightly.

"Alrigh'" he grunted at me. His voice was shadowed and low. Like he stuck a toad in his throat.

"Afternoon." I greeted back. He then went back to whispering in her ear again, but my hearing has always been accurate. Ear wigging on your parents when they argue has sharpened my hearing to listening to the faintest of conversations. Nosey, I know.

"What you up to my darling?" he softly asked. I kept my head down like I wasn't listening, scrabbling a sketch with my pencil.

"Homework. Me and Tana always do homework at this time." she replied back.

"You don't want to be doing homework with this prick." shut up you pillock... "Come to the back of the science block with me if you really love me."

"I guess I could spare a few minutes for you." she replied back. He stepped away from her (finally) to let her pack her things. She slumped her bag over her shoulder, and Duncan clutched onto her hand like tentacle. She glanced round back at me as they walked off and she had the most worried look, but I placed a thumbs up for her, to let her know to trust me.

It was 2:00 and I was walking to class. Jess and Duncan had gone off my mind for the time being, I was more focused on getting to lesson. Only when I heard a screech for my name did I switch on.

"TANA!" Jess was screaming. She sounded really stressed, and I could hear her running. This  sounded bad, it was worse when I looked to my left. Jess was stumbling towards me at break neck speed with the most frightened expression in her mouth.

"Jess?" I called, squinting at her. That's when I saw Duncan charging after her like a furious bull to a red rag. He then halted as he came round the corner, dead in his tracks. Jess hid behind me, whimpering and crying in fear.

"TANAAA!" Duncan bellowed at me, continuing his charge; only this time at me. I didn't move, either fear froze me, or I had no fear at all. It's a mystery to me what I was experiencing as that raging stallion galloped towards me, but what came next was frightening to say the least. He stopped in front of my face, glaring at me with ruby red eyes.

"What do you want Duncan?" I scowled at him, shaking but holding my ground in sturdy protection of Jess. She still quaked behind me, burrowing into me like a mouse.

"Your head... Meet me on the main field tomorrow lunch time. If you don't, you will regret you'd been born." he growled, shuving his face right up close to mine. He gawked at me for a couple of seconds, waiting for a reply.

"I will be there. Count on it." I made a promise now... I bound myself to it.
He stormed off in the opposite direction, steaming with black anger. I, myself, was shivering in excitement and fear. What had I just done?! Picking a fight with the biggest lad in year 11! I was dead! Out of the blue, the thoughts just faded away. Jess was hugging me with a tight grip around my neck from behind. She was sobbing closely into the back of my shoulder, and I felt closer to her than ever before.

"Thank you... Thank you so much..." she cried.
