12. When It Rains, It Pours...

When It Rains, It Pours...

June 15, 2009

11:00 A.M. GMT

I woke up refreshed and ready to start for the day. Gemma was gone, so I made her bed. I go into the bathroom and shower. After that, I put on a blue green T-shirt, black sweatpants, and my black and hot pink Nikes. I walked out of Gemma’s room and go into the kitchen for some breakfast. After breakfast, I found a note by the sink:

Dear Diana,

Harry and I have gone to work. Gemma has gone to university. We will be back at 15:00.  If you don’t mind, please do the chores on this note. You do not need to do our laundry, but I hope you know how to do your own. Sorry for any inconveniences.

Let’s see: Sweep, mop, dust, vacuum, wash dishes. Not bad. What time is it? It’s noon already?! Time to get my work on!

6:30 AM GMT

It’s such a beautiful Monday morning. Not. It’s raining cats and dogs outside! I get up half asleep and get dressed. Did I mention I have a job? No? Well, I work in a bakery on Macclesfield Road. It’s called W. Madeville. Call me whatever you want, but I love baking, and I’m not the only young baker there. Carol and Nancy are the sweet old ladies I work for. My co-workers are like family to me.

My mum drove me to the bakery since it’s raining. I walk in and greet Nancy, Evelyn and George. But where’s Carol and- “I can’t take it anymore! I hate this place! I QUIT!” Stephanie walked out in frustration. What in the world was that about?

“Oh hello Harry! Are you ready to start today?”

“Yes ma’am! But what about-”

“Don’t worry about Stephanie. We’ll find a replacement.” Carol answered my question before I asked, so I just nodded. Carol and Nancy start to talk about replacements while Evelyn, George, and I walked into the kitchen. I grabbed my apron, washed my hands, and started kneading dough.

“Hey George, what was that about?”

“Stephanie running out? I don’t know. Ev?”

“Well,” she turned and pointed directly at me, “this so-called Romeo wouldn’t notice the attention-wanting Juliet.”

“Well, it took her long enough that I wasn’t interested in Shakespeare; or her.”

George jumped in. “You wouldn’t believe what she asked me last week.”

“Spill it out George!” Evelyn said, “This I got to hear!”

George’s flashback:

Harry had just left as I heard my name being called. “Geooorge! ~” “Yeah?” It was weird that Stephanie would need me. “Do you know where Harry lives? I’ve been trying to get his attention. Maybe he’s just shy around pretty girls…” Oh please. Don’t flatter yourself. “Even if I knew, why would I tell a spoilt girl like you?” “Hmph! You’re no help at all!” She turns and heads out the door. I run to the door and scream out, “Besides Stephanie, HE’S NOT INTERESTED!”

End of flashback~

Ev and I burst out laughing. He’s right about me not being interested. I always reject girls like Stephanie and they end up spreading rumors about me being their boyfriend. After I confirm that the rumor isn’t true, they just say we broke up. “So Harry…”

“What is it Ev? Is someone else 'in love' with me?”

“As far as I know, nope. But a little birdie told me your family has a visitor from across the ocean.” I turned to George.

“Seriously George?”

“I couldn’t help it…”

“So, when are you going to introduce us?”

Suddenly I had an idea. “Well, why don’t we ask Carol if she could work here for a while? She does need a job.”

“Yeah, that can work. Hope she’s not like Stephanie…” Evelyn said as she took out dough that had already risen.

“Don’t worry, she’s okay. It will all work out.” It’s basically a win-win. Diana works here for a while to learn about independence, and it pushes Stephanie away for a while. Who knows? Maybe she’ll be jealous of Diana. Bwhahaha…

Man I’m exhausted! I fell on the couch and I closed my eyes. A quick nap wouldn’t hurt…

“Diana? Where are you? I’m home!” I hear a door close. I open my eyes, sit up and look at the couch. This doesn’t look like the couch I slept on! WHERE AM I!? “Oh there you are!” It’s Harry! Wearing a gray suit and blue bow tie, carrying a briefcase. “These are for you love.” He handed me red tulips. What is happening?! Is this real!? “Love, are you okay?”

“What’s going on Harry? Where are we?”

“Why Diana we’re in our home silly. Don’t you remember? Your parents emancipated you after you came here and you lived with us even after the program ended. You transferred to my school and you kept working at the bakery. I asked you out, we dated, I went to law school and…we got married.”

“This is just a dream Harry! There’s no way that happens in 2 days!!”

“Love calm down, you’re just a bit on edge since you’re pregnant. It wouldn’t be healthy for the baby.”

“BABY!!?!? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

I open my eyes and look around the room. Phew, it was just a dream. I hear a door close. I gulped hard. “Diana are you okay? I heard the screaming from outside. Are you hurt?” It’s Gemma. Thank God!

“I’m fine. It was just a bad dream.” More like a nightmare.

“Okay good. You mind helping me with lunch?”

“Not at all, Gemma.”

My mum and I got home and we sat down to eat the lunch Gemma and Diana made for us. Must be good since Diana helped cook. “So Gemma dear, how were your classes today?”

“Oh, they were good mum. Same as always.”

“What about you Harry? What’s going on at the bakery?”

“Well, someone was a diva and quit today…besides that-”

Gemma interrupted, “Did Evelyn quit? That really isn’t like her…”

“No Gemma, Ev didn’t quit. Will you stop interrupting me, please?”

“Oh of course your highness, anything for you.” She responded sarcastically.

“Easy Gemma,” My mum said, “let Harry finish.”

“Thanks mum. As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted,” Gemma rolled her eyes. “We’re down one person and the bakery is looking for a replacement.” I turn to Diana. “You want to work at the bakery? It’s only temporary since you’re here for 6 weeks. Besides, you still need a job, right?”

She started to nod. “Sure. I’d love to!”

“Awesome! I’ll go ask Carol on the phone when you can start.” After we finished lunch, I got up and went to call Carol. My mum and Gemma are cleaning up. When I finished calling, Diana walked up to me.

After Harry was done calling, I walked up to him. “Harry, you just saved me the trouble of looking for a job. Thanks.”

“You’re welcome, love.”

“So,” I began, “when do I start? I already know how to bake. Do I start today?”

“Well, Carol said you can start tomorrow. You might want to get enough sleep tonight. You’ll have to wake up early.”

“Alright. Thanks again.”

He smiles and says, “Anytime love. Anytime.”

After everyone left the house, I spent the rest of the day doing absolutely nothing. Dinnertime came around and I was in Gemma’s room playing Pokémon. Then I heard a door close. Oh no. “Diana? Where are you? I’m home.” I walk out of Gemma’s room and I am face to face with Harry. I really hope I’m either dreaming or I’m not. I can’t tell right now.

“So Diana, how was your day?”

“Well, considering that I didn’t do much today, I’d say okay.”

“Yeah, sorry you couldn’t start today. I had to walk home because my mum said she’ll be late tonight. So, want to order a pizza?” Yeah, I’m not dreaming.

“Sure, that’s fine. What about Gemma?”

“She works part-time at the Pizza Palace.” He goes to the phone and starts dialing. “Are you picky?”

“No, not really.” We watched TV for about an hour until there was a knock on the door.

“I’ll get it!” Harry got up and opened the door. “Thanks sis! I owe ya, but you’re not getting a tip.”

Gemma rolled her eyes. “Yeah. Yeah. You’re lucky I got out of work early because I delivered this pizza to you.”

We ate pizza, but Gemma turned in early. So it was just the two of us. “Want to watch a movie?” I look at him puzzled.

“I thought you said I should sleep early…”

“Gemma told me you took a nap before she got home. I think you’ll be alright. What do you say?”

He stared at me with his beautiful blue green eyes. “Okay, one movie wouldn't hurt.”

“Awesome! I knew you’d say yes.” We watched Titanic. An hour into the movie, I got up from the couch.

“Well Harry I’m going to-” I stopped and looked at him. He’s knocked out cold. I stopped the movie and turned off the TV. “Good night Harry,” I whispered. Wow, what a day today. I wonder what’s going to happen these 6 weeks…I kept staring at Harry. He looks so cute asleep…whoa. Maybe I do need some sleep…so I headed off to bed. What am I thinking? Harry? Cute? What if he has a girlfriend? Or maybe he doesn't like me…after a while, I fell asleep.
