"The day has come!" I heard a voice exclaim happily from the corridor. Then a person I had seen many times lately entered the room, holding a bouquet of flowers in her hand.
I waved shyly at her.
"How are you today? Excited, aren't you?" she asked me thrilled.
"I'm fine, thanks! But why should I be excited... Riley?" I tried to remember her name.
"Because you get out of this bloody place today! Say goodbye to the hospital, girl!" She giggled. I smiled widely at her as she put the flowers in a vase.
"It's time to pack your stuff! And the quicker, the better!"
She opened the closet and took a suitcase out. I got out of bed and walked toward her.
"I can do it; don't worry!" But she shook her head.
"No you go and get dressed in the bathroom while I do it quickly!" She handed me a few clothes and pushed me into the dark little room before closing the door.
"Eh! Turn on the light!" I yelled. The switch was on the wall outside the room and I heard her laugh as she turned it on. I rolled my eyes and started getting dressed.
I could hear Riley singing in the bedroom and hearing the sound of her voice made me smile. When I had woken up a few weeks ago, her face had been the first one I saw. She had started to cry and to smile at the same time. I had first wondered why she had seemed so happy on that day, as she was a stranger to me back then. But then it was explained that she was my best friend since primary school and that I had been in coma for a very long time after an awful accident.
But I couldn't remember anything. Many people had come to see me here but none of their faces rang a bell in my mind. Though the doctors told me my memory would come back one day or another, everything seemed weird to me now. It felt like nothing had happened in my life before.
"Lia, are you ready?" Riley's voice got me out of my thoughts.
"I am!" I replied while exciting out of the bathroom quickly.
"You look wonderful!" she exclaimed after peering at me. She hugged me tightly and gave me a kiss on the cheek before dragging me out of the bedroom.
"The doctor wants to see you a last time and then we can go home!" She winked at me.
"Home sweet home!" Riley muttered, putting my suitcase down in the hall of the flat. She then turned around and carried on talking to me, "come on in, Lia! Don't stay on the steps!"
She laughed gently. I slowly walked in and I soon felt excitement filling me as I stared at the place where I would now be living.
"I love this room," I whispered as I ambled into it, looking around me.
"Obviously you do! You decorated it!"
Riley giggled and I nodded though it seemed to me to be the first time I was seeing it.
"You can unpack your suitcase while I go and make some tea, can't you?" she asked me smiling. I smiled back to say yes and she started to walk away.
"Don't ask me to help you! I never understood how you put away your stuff," she yelled from the corridor and I burst out laughing. I must have been a messy person, I thought.
I took the suitcase and began emptying the content onto my bed before opening the closet.
I gasped with horror. Almost none of my clothes were folded correctly and everything was mixed together. I lifted up one of the t-shirts and found a single sock hidden under it. I sighed loudly; was it really me who had lived here? Riley was right; my organization wasn't the best...
"So, how's the putting away going?" Riley asked me, chuckling, as I walked into the kitchen a while afterwards. I didn't answer straight away, looking for a word to describe how the closet was but I didn't find any good one and this only made her burst out laughing.
"Here is your tea." She handed me a small cup and sat down in front of me. I drank a sip and felt the warmth filling me straight away, making me feel better at once. This tea was wonderful; all the cups of tea I drank at the hospital had been awful.
"Riley? Can I ask you something?" I spoke a while afterwards, breaking the silence. She looked up at me and nodded.
"Of course! Ask away!"
"There is something I remember," I carried on and she nearly dropped her cup.
"You... You remember something?" I could see how thrilled she was and I nodded slightly, a bit surprised by her reaction.
"I remember a name, though I can't remember who it connects with. Did I know someone called Zayn?"
As I finished my sentence her face froze and she avoided my look. Did I say something wrong?
"No, you didn't. I'm sorry, Lia. I don't know why you remember that name," she muttered. Sadness was written all over her face as she finished drinking her tea quickly.
An awkward silence followed our dialog but it soon was broken by the sound of the front door closing.
"Hello!" A voice I had already heard exclaimed happily. A tall and blonde guy had entered the kitchen and walked toward Riley. They hugged and shared a passionate kiss, almost forgetting that I still was here so I stared at my cup while waiting for them to acknowledge my presence again.
"Lia, this is Niall, my boyfriend," Riley finally introduced him. He smiled and waved and I did the same.
They both stared at me for a long time, probably hoping that I would remember something but I didn't. They seemed disappointed as I didn't react.
Niall sat down at the table beside Riley and she poured him as cup of tea.
"So... What do you think of the flat, Lia?" he asked me with a warm smile, while eating a biscuit which he had taken from a plate.
"I love it! It's a beautiful place and I'm sure I'll love living here!"
He laughed gently at my response.
"Riley. I was wondering... What am I going to do now?" I asked her afterwards.
She raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"Well... Am I going to work?"
"The thing is, you can't go back to your old work. But if you find a new position then I'm sure you can work again!" she told me and I nodded.
"Eh, I know what you could do!" Niall exclaimed suddenly, making the both of us jump. "If I'm right, you loved fashion; you know clothes and all," he started to explain his idea. Riley laughed slightly.
"No need to explain what fashion is, you know," she teased him.
He carried on, ignoring her, "We're looking for a new stylist as ours is moving away with her husband next week. Management is currently looking for another one. You could apply for the job!" he told me happily.
"Me? A stylist?" I repeated and he nodded hastily.
"Why not? I mean... The loss of your memory won't be a problem for this particular job, you know."
"That would be great!" I exclaimed and he burst out laughing.
I thought that applying for this new job was a good idea. Yes, that's what I'll do.
I looked up at Riley who smiled at me; however, there was something wrong with the way she smiled. Was there something wrong about Niall's idea that she wasn't revealing?
