"True power belongs to those who can wield it..."
"NO PLEASE! WE DON'T WANT TO DIE!"
"YES! PLEASE SPARE US!"
"HOW CAN A MERE CHILD KILL ALL OF US HERE?"
"JUST WHAT IS SHE?!?"
'SHE'S JUST A CHILD! DON'T MAKE HER INTO ONE OF YOU! WHY ARE YOU MAKING HER DO DIRTY WORK.', a woman shouted.
'SHE'S GOT POTENTIAL. WE DON'T WANT HER TO WASTE IT. SHE KILLED OVER 1000 PEOPLE ALREADY. SHE'S A GOOD PRIME EXAMPLE AS A GIFTED ASSASSIN.', a man with a suit protested.
"NO! DON'T TAKE MY CHILD AWAY FROM ME! SHE'S JUST A LITTLE GIRL! STOP! THAT'S MY DAUGHTER!"
"SILENCE! YOU DIRTY WHORE. OR ELSE I'LL KILL YOU."
"SHE'S GOING TO BE THE NEXT GUARDIAN! THE FOURTH CURATOR."
"BUT I WANT HER TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE! NOT A DYSTOPIA."
"OH YEAH? LIS, KILL HER. THAT'S AN ORDER!"
Lis woke up with a gasp, panting heavily. The dream she had wasn't a sweet one. It was her usual nightmare. The one she gets once in a while. It's happening again, she thought with loud sigh. It was said that Lis had amnesia before she turned seven years old. But Lis didn't bother to even ask or try to remember at all. She didn't want to.
She looked around and realised she was still in the hospital. She glanced at her analog watch and judging from the date, It's been two months now since that queer incident. Toshi and Michael had the time to visit me four days ago. How sweet, she giggled.
She gazed at the letter that was on the table beside her. Lis sat up and leaned forward towards the letter. Her body was still weak but she had enough energy to move. She gradually removed the familiar sticker, that was glued in the middle of the letter, for it to be opened.
In the letter, it says:
To Lissandra Desiree,
The letter is to inform you about your new assignment. Though, it is sudden, you will carry out this mission on the day you will be discharged. It will be a 5-days-and-4-nights job, so please get ready by then. You will be advised for further information and the outcome of this mission by one of the members of your team. This is not a choice for you to decide. The Queen demanded for 3 well-trained, responsible and efficient students from the Ace group. You were chosen, along with the other students. The meet up place is at the Nagoya Station. Capiscé?
Lis squashed the paper and from where she stood, threw it in the bin which was opposite from her bed. She hates working with other members from her group and everyone certainly knows this. So why the hell am I working with useless pigs, she frowned.
As Lis heard footsteps coming from outside, her frustration faded away.
"This presence..." she slightly whispered.
"You shouldn't furrow your brows like that," the gentle voice of an angel, it pacified Lis.
"Daiki?" she asked even though she knew it was her.
"Hellooooooo~ There!" she responded. " Close your eyes, Lis."
"Come on. Just play along!"
Lis did as she was told. Daiki opened the door and merrily walked in with a basket.
"Open!", she handed Lis the basket with a big smile on her face. As usual, her long silver hair was stunning and her purple eyes was glittering with happiness.
"Beautiful as always.", Lis complimented, completely mesmerised.
"Likewise", she gave me smile.
"What are you doing here?! Oh thanks for this gift."
"To visit you, duh! Why else would I be here?"
"Your habit of answering back with that tone hasn't changed."
They both bursted out laughing.
"Man, it's been ages since we last saw each other!", Daiki exclaimed
"It's been... almost 4 years now hasn't it?"
"Has it?", she laughed. "That long! Damn, I miss you so much."
Daiki was Lis' childhood friend. Before she moved, Daiki would always sneak into her house to invite Lis to a stroll around the island with her. Because of that, Lis' family found them irresponsible and troublesome kids. They'd skip classes and create troubles at the organization.
Daiki is a member from the Renance troupe, a clan full of intelligent spies. They are well known for their talent on technology. They are trusted to be the King's shadows. They'd know anything from anywhere. They collect werewolves as their spies because of their sharp senses. Daiki's was acknowledge by her knack of instincts and because of her quick-thinking skills when push comes to shove, and so she's the next heir for the clan so she was sent far away from her hometown to train and study to be the best of the best.
"Well more importantly, your wounds. What happened to you?!", Daiki worried.
"Haha. Don't worry about me! I'm fine. See?" Lis stood up slowly.
"Uhuh. I'm not sure about that. Your legs are shaking."
"Whatever." Lis stuck her tongue out.
"Ah..You'll be released from the hospital tomorrow right?", she worriedly asked. Lis nodded. "Well, be careful not to overdo it. You're very stubborn."
"Thanks!", Lis shouted sarcastically. Daiki approached Lis with a worry face. Lis tittered, "And you were the one who said that I shouldn't furrow my brows."
"Hey. I'm not the old one here."
"What!? I'm only older than you by 3 months, fool."
"Yeah. Yeah. Whatever you say, graaaandma." Daiki was using an annoying tone that pissed Lis off.
"Hmph. At least i'm not a brat."
They both threw comebacks and insults at each other but they knew that it doesn't have any meaning behind all those things they said.
"Man, I miss this!" Lis gave a long sigh. "Ow. Headache! It's weird though. The monster just came out of nowhere. I mean, I had to kill it. But I had some troubles soooo I used my Tenra"
"You know.. you've changed. Alot", Daiki said with a nonchalant voice. "I heard that you gained the title "The Heartless Akuma". Your style in assassinating haven't changed. Ever since we.. no.. ever since you joined the Xurban, you've been showing another side of you."
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"Well, I'm not surprised. We did killed a lot of people ever since we were ten years old."
"Wait, Are you talking about wha-"
Shortly after that, they were interrupted by a loud ring-tone. It was coming from Daiki's direction. She reached for her side pocket and answered her phone. She kept nodding and wasn't saying much. Lis stared at her face. She looks so mature. Like a reliable person. Unlike me, she thought as she grumbled. Daiki clicked her finger to get Lis' attention. She gestured her to shush with an index finger and a wink.
"Yes, ma'am. Understood.", Daiki finished. She looked weary when she gave a loud sigh. "Ok, I'll make this quick."
"Seems like you weren't informed about it"
"God, this is annoying. Just spill it."
"You received the letter from the Xurban right? About your mission?"
Lis' heart thumped with confusion. "How'd you know?"
"Well... Because I'll be guiding you at your mission but I'm not part of your team. I won't really be there but I'll be reporting to you about all kinds of information along your journey. We'll be communicating with an earpiece. It's wireless. It's not visible by the naked eye. You'll also be given an apparatus which allows you to do things normal people wouldn't be able to do, for example; seeing a person's mental state, their personality and with a piece of hair, you'll know everything about them. There's more but I can't be bothered telling you all about it. But because you guys will be wearing eye contacts, a new device created by my clan, only you guys can see these pop-ups."
"I don't really understand everything to what you're saying but this sounds interesting." Lis smirked.
"Don't interrupt me. Listen carefully!", Daiki snapped "This ain't a game. I won't tell you all the details now. I have to quickly brief you about my job."
"You know how my clan directly receives orders from the King? Well, for now, my purpose here... is to be your shadow..."
They both became silent for a while. Then they suddenly burst out laughing.
"Haha! The hell! When you put it like that, it sounds like you're so serious about it.", Lis snickered.
Daiki stopped laughing and punched her on the head. "Idiot. Of course I'm serious. Next month, I'll be inheriting the entire clan. This will be my final mission as Daiki Renance."
Lis rubbed her head and then reached out her hand. "Well, I'll be under your guidance, Lady Shadow." She smiled. Daiki gradually shook her hand and gave Lis a thumbs-up.
"Well, i'll be going now. I have a meeting to attend. In any case..you! Be a good girl!" Daiki concluded.
Lis gave her a big, wide smile as she saluted. "Roger that."
Daiki closed the door after she got out. Lis was alone again. She was happy for Daiki but she felt lonely at the same time. I'm guessing I won't see her that much anymore, she thought.
Daiki walked inside the elevator, followed by a man with a cap on his head and a white mask that covered his entire face. He pressed the button that leads to the parking lot.
"Are you sure about this, Daiki?", said the man with the cap.
"Well... I wouldn't want her to know about that extraordinary power of hers that she has yet to discover. It's better to keep quiet about it.", she replied. Daiki stared at the man, whom she was uncertain if she could trust him.
"If her latent power awakens, it'll make her a one-man killing machine... we're going to be in big trouble, you know that right?" the man continued.
"I'm fully aware of that. Don't underestimate her. She won't fall into the darkness like the others. She's stronger than any of the curators of the stone. Probably the only person that can surpass the first Queen of Rozen." Daiki walked out as soon the doors opened and the man walked behind her. "The only problem now is... she might lose control if she doesn't know how to survive out there."
"Are you talking about what's outside the barriers?"
She rushed inside in her limo that was waiting outside for her. The man strode towards her as she scrolled down the window. "I may not know who you are or why does the King trust you, but don't bring up any weird topics around her. She may look aloof to strangers and sounds gullible, but she's really shrewd when it comes to trying to hide things from her."
"Even if you didn't tell me, I already know how to deal with it." he chuckled.
The car drove into the dusky night. The man who was still standing in the middle of the road gawked at the moon that was gleaming bright in the starry sky. Lissandra Desiree. What kind of a girl are you? I wonder if we'll be able to get along, he muttered.
