When we got off the train, I found out that my things would already be in my dorm when I got sorted. A big man by the name Hagrid was calling first years to come over to him, because they would be taking the boats up to the castle.
When we got to the shore of the castle, Hagrid knocked on the door three times. Almost immediately, a women opened the door. She looked like someone you would most definitely not want to cross paths with. She introduced herself, "First year students, I am professor McGonagall, please follow me."
We walked through the door and into a magnificent hall. Professor McGonagall led us to an empty room and told us to smarten ourselves up. Everyone was really worried about what you had to do to get sorted. A girl named Hermione Granger was whispering to herself all the useful spells that she could use. All of a sudden, all of the other students went quiet. I looked up and there were ghosts hovering above us, so deep in a conversation they didn't even notice us. But one of them named Nearly Headless Nick said, "Oh my, first years! I hope you join Gryffindor, my house!" And all the other ghosts said the same thing and then flew through a wall.
Professor McGonagall came back and told us to line up one by one and to follow her. I was the 6th to last, in between a boy named Draco Malfoy and a girl named Pansy Parkinson. We walked to the front of the dinning hall where all the teachers ate. We made a small cluster in front of these steps. Professor McGonagall brought out a stool and on top of it was a battered old witches hat. Everyone got quiet and stared at the hat, so I did the same. It opened its mouth and started its song.
After the hat's song, everyone burst into applause.
"Now first years, when I call your name, you will come up and sit on the stool and put the sorting hat on your head." Professor McGonagall told them.
"Abbott, Hannah!" - "HUFFLEPUFF!"
I was so nervous I almost didn't hear my name called. I quickly climbed up the stairs and walked over to the sorting hat and placed it on my head. "Hmmm.... Where should I put you? You are brave but not as brave as Griffindor's have to be. You are not as kind as Hufflepuff's are either. Maybe Ravenclaw? No, I'll put you in....SLYTHERIN!!!!"
I walked happily over to the welcoming Slytherin table as they clapped loudly. I sat next to a Slytherin 5th who seemed ok, but not very friendly. I see Fred and George exchange glances that clearly say "How did she get into Slytherin?" But I just looked at them, smiled, and turned and watched the rest of the sorting
"Bones, Susan!" - "HUFFLEPUFF!"
"Boot, Terry!"- "RAVENCLAW!"
"Brocklehurst, Mandy!"- "RAVENCLAW!"
"Brown, Lavender!"- "GRYFFINDOR!"
"Bulstrode, Millicent!"- "SLYTHERIN!"
"Finch-Fletchley, Justin!"- "HUFFLEPUFF!"
"Finnigan, Seamus!"- "GRYFFINDOR!"
"Granger, Hermione!"- "GRYFFINDOR!"
"Longbottom, Neville!"- "GRYFFINFOR!"
"Malfoy, Draco!"- SLYTHERIN!"
And on and on....
After the sorting was done, Albus Dumbledore stood up and beamed "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! There are a few words I would like to say, and they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"
Professor Dumbledore sat back down while everyone clapped and cheered. The food appeared and I could see that some people were shocked that it just appeared, but I knew better than to look, shocked because before my dad died he would always play this game with me called "Find the Disappearing Food" Whereas, the title clearly explains the game, but my mom and I don't play it anymore, it's still too hard to do much but as they say, time can cure almost anything.
After everyone had eaten as much as they could the main course disappeared and desserts appeared in their place. I took a little bit of the treacle tart and rice pudding. I sat listening, trying to attract as little attention to myself as I could, but one guy who was in my year named Draco Malfoy kept trying to start a conversation with me, but I would end it quickly. He finally asked "Am I bothering you?"
"No, not really I just don't like talking very much. I prefer reading." I replied.
"Oh, well all right." Said Draco hesitantly.
"You know it's not unusual to read. You should try it some time." I suggested.
"But why do you like reading so much? Wouldn't you rather talk with your friends?" asked Draco.
"I like to read because it's like escaping your own problems and going into someone else's, but all you have to do is sit back and wonder what you would do in that kind of situation. But I always have to remind myself that every uplift has to come down at some point." I replied thoughtfully.
"Interesting maybe I should think of the assigned reading they give us like that." said Draco.
The rest of the meal went with me telling Draco about all the books I read and how each one could uplift and downtrodden you. Also, Dumbledore gave a speech on where we were not allowed to go and then he ended dinner with having us sing the school song (I refused and looked longingly at my cu,p wanting some water, and it just filled up, most likely the work of one of the house elves.) Then, all the houses parted ways, we went downstairs and every other house went upstairs. When we reached the entrance to our common room. The password was "pureblood". I was so tired that I didn't even notice that everything looked green because we under the lake. The prefect showed us to our rooms and then left us be. I quickly changed into sweat pants and a tank top, got under the cold, yet comforting, covers and fell in a deep sleep.
