Author's Note: Before you read, please check out my latest movella, The Transfer Student, a Harry Styles love story. Thanks! :)
Despite the hangover, I managed to get there within 20 minutes, with a large bottle of water to quench my thirst already drained halfway. Stepping out of my car, I adjusted my hat to hide my hair as much as possible and strolled over to Jamie, who was obviously not expecting to see me.
"Niall? What are you doing here?"
Damn it, Harry. I cast a dirty look in his direction since he was watching us. In return, he winked and smirked.
I tried to think quickly for an answer that didn't make it seem I was stalking her.
"I wanted to take you to visit Darcy and Quinn." I also wanted her to visit her old flat where she lived with James temporarily, perhaps seeing her old room would spark her memories.
She chewed down on her bottom lip, averting her eyes away. She didn't seem to keen on it.
"Actually.." She turned to look at Harry, who was talking to someone on his phone. But then she turned back to me, looked into my eyes and sighed, smiling.
"I'd be delighted," she agreed.
"Great," I replied, relieved.
"Seems like you two are getting along well enough," Harry teased, jogging over. "Will you be alright if I leave you with this cheek chap? " he asked Jamie, slapping my back, behaving as if this hadn't been planned and was an impromptu decision.
"Yeah, Niall's taking me to see my sisters." She looked at her clothes and pursed her lips. "Do I look okay?"
"You look beautiful," I answered immediately, earning a shy, surprised glance from her.
"You look good," Harry answered simultaneously.
"Thanks," she said to both of us.
"I'd better be going. Have fun you two!" Harry said cheerfully, leaning in to hug her as she pecked him on the cheek. I ignored the pinch in my chest.
"See ya mate!" Harry waved to me as he jogged back over to Preston, who was waiting in the car.
I escorted Jamie to the passenger's seat of my car, opening the car door, waiting for her to sit and closing the door afterwards like a true gentlemen. I slid across the hood to save time(and look cool to impress her) but ended up tripping over my foot when I landed, my ass on the ground. Dusting myself off, I got into the driver's seat, hiding my embarrassment which didn't seem to stop Jamie from chortling.
And I couldn't help but join in.
I drove smoothly, knowing when and where to turn since I'd gone to visit Darcy and Quinn a few times within the eleven months when Jamie was gone, to see how they were doing. They behaved like usual, not too sad or lost. I never brought Jamie up, fearing it would upset them because they were too young to understand what was going on and they never did either. Neither did Gertrude.
As we passed a row of houses, our cheerful chatter abruptly came to a halt, with Jamie staring out the window.
"You alright there?"
"Ye-yeah," she hesitated, facing the front again as we drove past. "It's just that that house seemed familiar but I can't remember," she admitted, her mind far away.
I smiled in encouragement as she nervously smiled back.
"It's not much further. We'll be there soon," I informed her. She nodded, fidgeting with her fingers. It looked like she was excited but anxious at the same time.
"What if they don't like me? I'm not who they remember me to be," she said softly, expressing her concern.
I chuckled. "You're their sister. They love you, regardless."
"If you say so," she replied, hopeful.
I had to maneuver the car for parallel parking which I'd grown to be more comfortable with the more I drove although I didn't really get a lot of opportunity to do so since I spent most of my time with the band.
Switching off the engine, I quickly made my way around to the passenger's seat, without sliding across the hood and held the door open for Jamie as she stepped out,her cheeks a rosy pink, her teeth chewing on her bottom lip. I led the way to the front door, walking beside her with my hands in my pockets. She huddled closer to me,looping her arm through mine. I smiled a t the thought of how she'd do this when we went out. Back then. She'd rest her head on my shoulder and occasionally give me a kiss on my cheek and laugh when I'd look at her when she did that.
"It's going to be alright," I consoled her. She nodded, taking a deep breath as I outstretched my arm and knocked on the door firmly, twice.
Not soon after, the door swung open, revealing Gertrude, who, upon looking at Jamie's countenance, gasped, tears welling up in her ears and jumping to envelop Jamie in a warm, tight hug. Clearly, she'd missed Jamie.
Initially, Jamie was taken aback, not that she didn't like the intimacy from someone she barely recognised, but she was surprised. Eventually, Jamie wrapped her arms around her aunt, patting her back gently.
"Hello," she greeted. I couldn't see her face since her back was to me so I didn't know how she felt.
Gertrude pulled back, placed her hands on the sides of Jamie's face, kissed Jamie's cheeks and then hugged her tightly again before letting go, an arm lingering around Jamie's shoulders, guiding her inside. She beckoned me inside too,by smiling warmly at me.
"Thank you," she mouthed. I nodded, needing no thanking. "Darcy! Quinn!"
Soon after, the two girls, now much taller than Jamie would have remembered, came running in,rowdy. Their eyes widened at the sight of their sister, which they hadn't seen in almost a year, standing in their living room. The sisters screamed loud enough to make my ears pop, similar to the screaming of the many fans we had. They sprinted and jumped, latching onto Jamie, causing her to stumble backwards. She would've fallen if I wasn't standing behind her so she fell onto me and instinctively, I held my arms out to stop us from hitting the ground. She laughed, her voice clear and melodious.
"Well, hello, you two," Jamie greeted cheerfully, setting both of them down on their feet gently. Nevertheless, their arms were still tight around her neck, restricting her from standing back up. The sisters' cheeks were red, they were giggling but were sobbing at the same time. It didn't need to be explained how much they'd missed Jamie.
The girls wasted no time showing Jamie how they'd developed, including their bedroom which included pictures of Jamie and I together, of the band, of her and them together, smiling from ear to ear. They showed her their academic work and proudly described how well they were doing, how many teeth they'd lost and generally telling Jamie what she'd missed out on in her absence.
I watched quietly with Gertrude, happy but worrying whether all of this information that Jamie was being exposed to about her past life was being taken in or if it was just too much.
Gertrude informed me that she'd told the children that Jamie was away because she was ill and that she wouldn't be the same when(or if) she came back. However, seeing the three sisters interact in front of me was proof of that Darcy and Quinn were never really bothered by that. All they wanted was their Jamie back.
All I've wanted is MY Jamie back.
